Mean performance of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) genotypes under Tamil Nadu condition
Thirteen genotypes of brinjal were collected from various places of Tamil Nadu and other states and evaluated during September 2017- January 2018. Among these, the plant height of the genotypes ranged between 72.93cm (Utkal Anushree) to 95.84 cm (Bhavani Gold), Number of branches was found be highest in IC 3749281 (7.75), ABSR 2 recorded the least number of days to first flowering (43.15 days), Karur Local showed the least value of 64.46 days for days to first harvest among the genotypes, Thevur Local recorded the maximum fruit length of 12.95 cm, Mattu Gulla showed the highest value of fruit girth (17.44 cm) and individual fruit weight (88.67 g). The maximum number of fruits was recorded in ABSR 2 (39.75), the shoot borer infestation was found to least in IC 374928-1 (11.28 %) and least value for fruit borer infestation was observed in Karur Local (14.16 %) and ABSR 2 (14.87 %). Among the genotypes evaluated, the highest marketable yield was recorded in Karur Local (2.60 kg) followed by Bhavani Gold (2.15 kg)
Foliar disease infection on some forest trees
In a routine survey foliar disease causing fungi were identified as Phytopthora sp. on leaves of Bauhinia varigata, Alternaria sp. on Cordia dichotoma, Helminthosporium sp. and Alternaria sp. on leaves of Azadirachta indica, Helminthosporium sp on leaves of Pterocarpus santalims Alternaria sp. on Ziziphus mauritiana as well as Eagle marmelos and Fusarium sp. on Acacia leucophloea leafs
Traditional phytotherapy used by the rural peoples of Hamirpur District of HP in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases mainly Gonorrhea and Syphilis
Indigenous knowledge about particular floral diversity of an area is necessary for the identification of plants and their traditional uses for the purpose such as for food, fibres, fertilizer, fodder, fuel ritual and medicinal importance. In present paper the emphasis will be given on medicinally importance plants for primary health care. The present paper reveals that there are sixteen plants species which belongs to thirteen families are used for therapeutical or traditional uses as indigenous plants of Hamirpur district for the primary health care or treatment of sexually transmitted diseases
Biotic stress inducible promoters in crop plants- a review
Promoter is a DNA sequence that regulates the expression of a particular gene. They are classified on the basis of their function and spatio-temporal expression into constitutive, tissue-specific or development-stage-specific and inducible promoters. Plant genes associated with defence responses are activated by stress-factors and these genes are known to be regulated by promoters or the upstream elements. Promoters induced by abiotic stress factors in plants are fairly well studied compared to biotic stresses. This review presented information generated on promoters and regulatory elements involved in defence gene expression due to insect damage, pathogen and nematode attack to crop plants, mechanism and their utilization in crop improvement through genetic engineering
Effect of micro irrigation on growth, yield and quality of sardar guava under semi arid conditions of Rajasthan
A field experiment on guava (Psidium guajava L.) cv. Sardar was carried out at Department of Horticulture, Udaipur. There were seven treatments i.e., drip irrigation at 25%ET through 2drippers/ plant per day (T1), irrigation at 50% ET through 3 Drippers/plant daily (T2), irrigation at 75% ET through 4 drippers/plant daily (T3), irrigation at 25% ET through 2 dripper/plant on alternate day (T4), irrigation at 50% ET through 3 dripper/plant on alternate day (T5) and irrigation at 75% ET through 4 dippers plant on alternate day (T6) and conventional flow irrigation at 0.75 CPE (T7). Plants were planted at a spacing of 6x6metre under randomized block design with three replications and age of plant three years. Result revealed that the irrigation at 75% ET through 4 dippers per plant per day (T3) exhibited significantly higher plant height (350 cm), canopy volume (24.83 cubic metre), fruit weight (135g) and per plant yield (14.89 kg). While, in quality wise highest TSS in T3 (irrigation at 75% ET through 4 drippers/plant daily) and vitamin C content in control (T7)
Peroxidase actvity, its isozymes and deterioration of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. BR.] flour during storage
Development of off odour and flavour is an old and unresolved problem associated with pearl millet flour during storage and is the major hindrance for their consumer acceptability. In this study role of peroxidase, lipids and phenolics in deterioration of quality of pearl millet in control and stored flour of high (HHB 94) and low (ICMA 94222 x 78/71) rancid genotype was determined. Fat content, fat acidity, free fatty acids, total phenols, C-glycosylflavones content and peroxidase activity of HHB 94 were higher than that of ICMA 94222 x 78/71. Storage of flour for 8 days of these two genotypes showed significant increase in fat acidity and free fatty acids. Storage had no effect on C-glycosylflavones content whereas peroxidase activity reduced significantly with storage time. Isozyme profile showed that pearl millet grains had 3 isozymes of peroxidase and banding pattern was similar in both HHB 94 and ICMA 94222 x 78/71. While banding intensity represented that ICMA 94222 x 78/711 had lesser peroxidase activity as compared to HHB 94. The result suggested that peroxidase activity, fat acidity and free fatty acid value were usually correlated
Effect of auxins and cytokinin on budding and growth of saplings of bael (Aegle marmelos Correa.)- a medicinal plant
In this investigation, NB-9 cultivar of bael (Aegle marmelos Correa.) was selected as mother plant for obtaining scion bud. The foliar spray of NAA, IBA and BA (25 and 50 ppm each) either on rootstock or/and scion branch was applied seven days prior to budding. The most responsive treatment was foliar spray on rootstocks with BA at 50 ppm concentration. Rootstocks treated with BA (50 ppm) resulted in early bud breaking (10.67 days), maximum bud sprouting percentage (100%), length of sprouted scion 30 days after budding (22 cm), diameter of sprouted scion (2.53 mm), number of leaves (7.13) and maximum scion growth initiation in plants (87.50%) as compared to other treatments. In another experiment, when plant growth regulators were applied to scion branch of mother plant at seven days prior to budding, did not respond satisfactorily with respect to almost all the parameters except bud sprouting percentage and bud survival percentage. These treatments failed to have promotive effect on length of scion shoot and percentage of plants with scion growth
Performance of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) genotypes in Kymore plateau and Satpura Hills of Madhya Pradesh
The experimental material comprised of fifteen genotypes of cowpea including two checks viz. Kashi Kanchn and Arka Garima received from AICRP on Vegetable Crops, IIVR, Varanasi. The objective of the experiment was to identify suitable genotypes to be used as cultivar in Kymore plateau and Satpura Hillsof Madhya Pradesh. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences between genotypes indicating presence of sufficient amount of variability in all the characters studied. Wide range of variability was observed for days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, number of inflorescences per plant, number of pods per inflorescence, pod yield per plant, number of pods per plant and days to last pod harvest indicating the scope for selection of suitable initial breeding material for further improvement. On the basis of the mean performance of the genotypes among traits studied, the following were identified as promising lines for further crop improvement in cowpea viz., 2012/COPBVAR-6, 2014/COPBVAR-6 and 2014/COPBVAR-5. Among all the genotypes studied, genotype2012/COPBVAR-6 recorded the highest pod yield per plant and found suitable to the local agro-climatic conditions
Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) growth and yield as influenced by organic farming practices
The present investigation was carried out to study effect of organic manures on growth, yield and corm production of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) under Karewa condition of Kashmir Himalaya. The different organic manures and their combinations significantly affected vegetative, floral and yield attributes of saffron. Floral attributes of saffron were also significantly affected by different organic manure treatments and recorded maximum value for pistil length (4.19 and 4.13 cm), pistil fresh weight (40.21 and 42.00 mg) and pistil dry weight (8.01 and 8.05 mg) in T13 (33.33% FYM+ 33.33% vermicompost+ 33.33% poultry manure) during both years. Flowers number/m2 (48.27 and 55.21) and saffron yield (3.84 and 4.44 kg/ha) was observed highest in treatment T13 (33.33% FYM+ 33.33% vermicompost+ 33.33% poultry manure) followed by T11 (25% FYM+ 25% vermicompost + 50% poultry manure) with flowers number/m2 (45.27 and 50.55) and saffron yield (3.60 and 4.09 kg/ha) as against lowest in T14 control. Highest total saffron yield and corm yield (8.28 kg/ha and 10.05 t/ha) was found in T13 (33.33% FYM+ 33.33% vermicompost+ 33.33% poultry manure) which was statistically at par (7.69 kg/ha and 9.64 t/ha) with T11 (25% FYM+ 25% vermicompost + 50% poultry manure) and lowest was recorded (2.92 kg/ha 7.12 t/ha) in T14 control, respectively. Treatment T13 (33.33% FYM+ 33.33% vermicompost+ 33.33% poultry manure) produced highest B:C ratio 4.24 followed by 3.98 in T11 (25% FYM+ 25% vermicompost + 50% poultry manure) and lowest 2.63 in T14 control
Effect of organic manures and different levels of NPK on growth and quality of bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standl.]
A field experiment was conducted during kharif, season 2012 to study the effect of organic manures and different levels of NPK on growth and quality of Bottle gourd. The experiment consisting of 16 treatments viz., four levels of NPK (control, 100:50:50, 80:40:40 and 60:30:30) and organic manures (control, vermicompost, poultry manure and FYM) designed in factorial RBD with three replications. Results indicated that application of NPK (100:50:50) + vermicompost (5.0 t/ha) was recorded minimum days taken to appearance of first female flower, maximum length of main vine (m), number of primary branches per vine, length and width of leaf (cm) 45 days after sowing, minimum node number at first female flower appeared, protein content in fruit, crude fibre content in fruit, nitrogen content in fruit, phosphorus content in fruit, potassium content in fruit, yield q/ha and return rupees investment
