    Exploitation of pearl millet germplasm for identification of low grain phytate containing parental line

    The present study was carried out to identify low grain phytate containing pearl millet parental lines amongst advanced inbred lines and designated B-line (counterpart of CMS lines) . A total number of 92 lines (46 each of inbreds and designated B line) were grown in a randomized block design with two replications during kharif-2013 and 33 selected (14 inbreds and 19 designated B-lines) from kharif-2013 were grown in kharif-2014 as well. Analysis of variance indicated significant differences between the tested genotypes during both the seasons. the phytate content varied from 4.45 to 6.80 mg/g and 1.31 to 6.19 mg/g during kharif-2013 in advanced inbred lines and designated B-lines respectively. Almost similar results were observed during kharif-2014, except the like with 1.31 mg/g phytate content during kharif-2013 was not stable and in kharif -2014, the phytate content for this line was 6.87 mg/g. Since none of the genotype screened showed low phytate content, therefore a large number of breeding lines are needed to be tested to know their genetic potential for low phytate

    Study on gas exchange and antioxidant system of solanaceous species under water logged conditions

    The aim of our work is to study gas exchange and antioxidant system in nine wild solanaceous species Solanum indicum, Solanum macrocarpon, Solanum acculeatissimum, Solanum sysimbrifolium, Solanum nigrum, Solanum viarum, Solanum insimum Solanum torvum, and Solanum macranthum under water logging condition. Experiments were laid in factorial completely randomized design with three replications. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance decreased and closure of stomata was quick during flooding conditions in all the Solanum species. Species Solanum torvum performed photosynthetically better under flooding and also had better stomatal conductance. The antioxidants like SOD, catalase and peroxidase activity was significantly increased during the period of waterlogging and lipid peroxidation (MDA) content was decreased in tolerant Solanum species. An increase in the some parameters associated with oxidative stress, namely peroxides production, lipid peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage, reveals that root oxygen deficiency caused photooxidative damage in all rootstocks of solanaceous species. The ability to maintain a balance between the formation and detoxification of activated oxygen species appeared likely to increase the survival potential and the tolerance of the plants against varying oxidative stress. On basis of our observation, we conclude that species with higher photosynthetic rate and antioxidant system had improved waterlogging stress tolerance

    Record of insect pollinators on the inflorescence of Murraya koenigii in Rajasthan

    Observations were recorded on the insect pollinators visiting the blossom of Murraya Koenigii in April-May. Flowers are white, funnel shaped with terminal cymes. Flower serves as nectar and pollen resource for the insect pollinators. Three species of order Lepidoptera and five species of order hymenoptera were recorded during the present study

    Relative susceptibility of mothbean, Vigna aconitifolia varieties to sucking pests

    A filed experiment was conducted to screen relative susceptibility of nine mothbean, Vigna acobitifolis varieties against two major sucking pests’ viz. jassid and whitefly. It was observed that MBS 803 and RMO 4-1-6-09 were less susceptible while RMO-225 and CZM-2 were highly susceptible and remaining cultivars were moderately susceptible to jassid.     Aim of this study is to enhance the shelf life of jasmine flower buds by application of different anti-senescence chemicals to meet out the marketing demand with improved post-harvest quality. The experimental design followed for this study is completely randomized block design with seven treatments, each replicated thrice. The harvested jasmine flowers were treated with different anti-senescence chemicals viz., Silver nanoparticle (SNP) (20ppm), Boric acid (4%), Sucrose (4%), NAA (100 ppm), BA (500 ppm), α-AIB (20µM) and packed in 200 gauge polypropylene bag without ventilation then stored in cold storage condition. Among the different anti-senescence chemical treatments silver nanoparticle (20 ppm) shows positive significant difference in freshness index, flower opening index, color retention index and maintained the shelf life up to 11 days over the control for 7 days

    Effect of pasture type, phosphorus levels and phosphate solubilizing bacteria on forage productivity under agroforestry system in semi-arid regions

    A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of pasture type, phosphorus levels and phosphate solubilizing bacteria on forage biomass and quality under agroforestry system in semi-arid conditions during kharif seasons. The result revealed that dry matter accumulation of lablab bean at 60 DAS, crop growth rate (CGR) from 30 to 45 DAS, dry fodder yield (DFY) of lablab bean and total biomass production were recorded significantly higher when lablab bean was sown with cenchrus grass in alternate paired rows, however, protein yield was estimated to be at par among types of pasture. Growth parameters of lablab bean viz. fresh and dry weight per plant at 60 DAS, CGR (30-45 DAS), number and dry weight of nodules per plant at 45 DAS and quality parameters viz. leaf and stem N-content, dry fodder yield of lablab bean, total biomass, average CP content and protein yield increased significantly with increasing levels of phosphorus from 20 to 60 Kg P2O5/ha. Positive and significant correlation between total protein yield and CP content (r= 0.53*), and biomass production (r=0.64**) was observed. Total biomass production was significantly increased to extent of 9.09 per cent due to PSB inoculation and estimated protein yield was observed to be higher by 10.42 per cent with PSB inoculation as compared to without inoculation

    A field experiment was conducted at Regional Research Station, Paiyur during the year 2017-2018, to improve the physiological and flowering parameters using various plant growth regulators and nutrients. Observations were recorded on physiological and floral parameters. The chlorophyll ‘a’ (2.21 mg/g), ‘b’ (1.80 mg/g), total chlorophyll content (2.68 mg/g), chlorophyll index (57.98) and total soluble protein content (13.96 mg/g) were higher in the treatment PBZ (paclobutrazol) @ 0.75 g a.i. per m2 + KNO3 (1%) + NAA (20 ppm) during the main season. The least number of days were taken for initiation of first flowering (61.00 days) in the same treatment during the main season. Number of hermaphrodite flowers per panicle (458.29), length of panicle (43.63 cm) and number of panicles per m2 (36.33), were higher during the main season comparing the off season crop in the same treatment

    Six cultivars of Nerium (Single Pink, Single White, Single Red, Double Pink, Double White and Double Red) were evaluated to identify the salt tolerant cultivars on basis of growth and morphological parameters. This study was carried out in Department of Horticulture, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Madurai. These cultivars were transplanted polybags with soils of four different salt levels includes control (S1 - 0.87 dS m-1), low saline (S2 - 3.94 dS m-1), medium saline (S3 - 5.78 dS m-1) and high saline (S4 - 7.85 dS m-1) along with 2 dS m-1 saline water (by dissolving NaCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2) was irrigated based on moisture availability. The parameter viz., plant height (84.53 cm), number of leaves per plant (1.09), leaf area (1773.32 cm2), stem thickness (3.12 cm), number of branches (1.09), root length (28.87 cm), root dry weight (25.59 g), internodal length (4.01 cm) and survival percentage (94.33%) was recorded. All parameters show significant decrease with increasing salinity. In cultivar Single Red plant height was high and low height was observed in Double Pink at high salinity. Double Red cultivar shows more tolerance to all salinity levels, but Double pink have more salinity symptoms and shows less tolerance

    An experiment was conducted at Horticultural Research Station, Pechiparai, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University during the year 2017-2018 to standardize the media for hardening the plantlets of Dendrobium var. Thongchai Gold. The in vitro plantlets were hardened with four different growing media and their combinations viz., charcoal, coconut husk, broken pot pieces, thermocol and their combinations as  charcoal + coconut husk (1:1) ,  charcoal + broken pot pieces (1:1), charcoal + thermocol (1:1), coconut husk + broken pot pieces (1:1), coconut  husk + thermocol (1:1), charcoal + coconut husk + broken pot pieces (1:1:1) and charcoal + coconut husk + broken pot pieces + thermocol (1:1:1:1). The results revealed that combination of coconut husk and broken pot pieces in 1:1 ratio significantly enhanced the plant height (9.02 cm) and number of leaves per plantlet (4.61) while the control recorded the plant height of (7.47 cm) with 3.50 leaves per plant. The leaf length (6.96 cm), root length (6.90 cm) and shoot girth (3.20 mm) were the highest in the treatment combination of coconut husk and broken pot pieces in 1:1 ratio.  In the control the leaf length (5.52 cm), root length (5.30 cm) and shoot girth (2.20 mm) respectively. The highest survival per cent of 83.49 was recorded in the same treatment where as the survival per cent in the control was 62.55. Hence it can be concluded that the treatment combination of coconut husk and broken pot pieces in 1:1 ratio was the best medium for hardening the in vitro plantlets of Dendrobium var. Thongchai Gold

    Screening and identification of Piper species as rootstocks resistance against the root knot nematode under glasshouse condition

    A study was conducted to evaluate the reaction of different Piper species to root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) and the nematode reproduction were studied in the nematode infested pot culture experiment. Three Piper species viz., Piper colubrinum, Piper argyrophyllum and cultivated Piper nigrum varieties of IISR Sakthi, IISR Thevam, Panniyur-1 and Karimunda were screened.  In this study, seven rootstocks were evaluated for resistance based on the growth of pepper cuttings and resistance indexes to Meloidogyne incognita, which were surveyed 45 days after inoculation with M. incognita. The observation was recorded viz., nematode soil population (200 cc), number of galls, number of egg mass, number of females, gall index. All the Piper species show varying degree of response. Out of seven rootstocks used in this experiment IISR Sakthi were found to be  highly resistant, Piper colubrinum, IISR Thevam and Karimunda resistant to root knot nematode and these cultivars can be used as a source of resistance. Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), in particular, suffer extensive damage due to root-knot nematodes, and only a few wild species are known to be resistant. Grafting of cultivated plants to rootstocks of known resistant Piper species rootstocks could be an effective method to resolve this problem
