Ethical leadership and investment for a sustainable future : a reference manual
Exists also in French under the title:
Leadership et investissement éthique vers un avenir durable : un manuel de référence, Globethics Publications, 2024 (ISBN 9782889316236).This Reference Manual has been prepared as a result of the African Church Assets Programme (ACAP) journey, initiated by the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) General Assembly in Kampala, Uganda in 2013. The learning made available in the Manual through case studies, actionable steps and the self-assessment questionnaire are provided with the aim to promote ethical leadership and practices within churches and church-related organizations. It is designed as a guide and reference for leaders within these organizations, offering insights, strategies, and practical tools to promote integrity and accountability in all facets of their roles. At its core, ethical leadership in faith- based organizations is rooted in the principles of transparency, honesty, integrity, inclusivity, accountability and righteousness. Leaders are entrusted with the sacred responsibility of stewarding not only the resources and missions of their organizations but also the spiritual well-being and trust of
their communities. By applying the strategies and principles contained in this Manual, it is possible to engage in transformative change, which is all about restoring a culture of improved ethical leadership and investment in our institutions. Welcome, and feel encouraged to use and to share this Reference Manual with others
Ethical, regulative and legislative perspectives on emerging technologies and education
Ethical considerations in emerging technologies for education entails clear options on at least four different sets of concepts.
Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the landscape of education. However, their adoption raises ethical
questions. One challenge lies probably in obtaining informed consent from students in the changing environment of the places where they study, in
close interaction with AI technological innovations.
There are regulations and legal perspectives that both bring solutions but also challenges.
Education and science, as distinct from technology, may need to be redefined from a philosophical perspective.
Technologies of information open a new dimension on regulatory and legal aspects in relation to bringing more justice on a global scale.
Technology and science are two distinct fields, entailing a set of different disciplines. These days, public media give us the impression that
supercomputers, which are used to analyse tens of millions of risk scenarios, will solve most of our concrete risks, but is it always useful to
use the computing power of a computer to maximise societal stability and prevent concrete harms?
Before we think about regulating emerging technologies, we might need to think about what our problems require, often there will be a delicate
balance, between knowing the reality of the problem, before we think of the solution, and before we check if we have mastered some physical
reality-based application of our problem-solving thinking. On the one hand, rapid technological advancements exist, on the other scientific use of
intelligence in solving concrete problems which is not only a matter of technology, is rather often related to defining the right pragmatic use of
sciences. For example, the question of the predictability of risks has always been a complex issue, and technologies in the past as today, posed
challenges as much as they brought possible solutions. There are many situations, where we can describe a set of phenomena, but cannot predict,
like tossing a coin in the air and trying to guess which way it will land
Lucha contra la tiranía en la salud pública : contribuciones de Daniel Callahan a una bioética del futuro
As a pioneer of bioethics, Daniel Callahan devoted much of his studies to
public health, an obligatory subject of this discipline. The objective of this
study is to give a general look at the work of Callahan and to confirm, as even
in public health was installed the “tyranny”, inspired aspect of the Socratic
philosophy. To achieve this purpose, the author’s thought was investigated in
various sources (books, interviews, articles) to reconstruct his ideas. Callahan
does not limit himself to making denunciations about the tyrannies of survival,
technology, individualism and health, on the contrary, in his books is
dedicated to the construction and defense of the universal health system, solidarity,
equitable, which should not depend on capacity to pay. It also suggests
considering the future of bioethics as an interdisciplinary proposal
Justicia territorial y bioética : transformar diálogos de saberes en diálogos de haceres
The objectives of this theoretical review, which simultaneously articulates applied
research, are the following: a-communicate a theoretical and practical
synthesis of Territorial Justice in Latin America, b-introduce the knowledge
of some perspectives of Bioethics related to Territorial Justice, and c-analyze
and recognize some aspects in common between Territorial Justice and
Bioethics with the purpose of transforming dialogues of knowledge into dialogues
of doing. With contributions from teachers in transformation theories
and in Participatory-Action-Research, as well as territorial and environmental
theories, the pollination of this group of more than 1500 people for almostfour decades emphasizes methods, techniques and concrete useful devices;
so that we can make our utopias come true and thus walk through new ones,
always from a rigorous, popular, emerging and transforming science. This
publication has the goal of inviting to solidify the bridges between these two
disciplines–one in development, the other more developed–so that together
they can accompany in the coming decades the concrete work of a number
of other sciences that produce invaluable contributions to knowledge, and a
more respectful human evolution of the Planet and its beings. The receptivity
in the work from other disciplines will be more than favorable if from the
Territorial Justice and Bioethics we manage to land theoretical, axiological
and epistemological principles, with specific scientific devices, methods and
techniques to achieve it. In this short text we communicate and propose clues
for it
La crisis del agua y su uso en la agricultura
Water is a common symbol of humanity, social equity and justice; however,
its shortage, scarcity, unequal distribution, competition for its use, pollution,
climate change, and lack of an ethical regulatory framework have led to its
global crisis. Access to water is a fundamental right linked to the right to
health, the environment and food; the latter is closely related to intensive agriculture.
The agricultural sector is the main supplier of food worldwide, but it
is also the one that uses the largest amount of freshwater available for human
consumption (70 %). Therefore, the aim is to analyze the water crisis from its
ethical dilemmas, with special emphasis on the problem of water use in agriculture,
as well as to establish a proposal for an efficient use of this substancein food production. This review shows the need for strategies for the proper
management and efficient use of water, both in agriculture and in other economic
sectors, based not only on a legal framework but also on an ethical
framework, in which all those responsible for the water crisis participate in the
search for solutions
Territorio y bien común : una propuesta de diálogo fraterno
We want to present some principles derived from the encyclicals Laudato Sí
and Fratelli Tutti, of Franciscan inspiration, which could be used from bioethics,
and would allow decision makers and technicians who accompany them
some guidelines for the planning of the territory that they have these three
elements: the space as a natural element, the community that in habits it and
the power relations that contribute to its ordering. For this, it is necessary to
understand that the territory is made up of different visions of the same space
in which the natural and the anthropic are mixed, generating a varied and
complex network of relationships. When analysing a territory, it must be considered
its physical-spatial components and the different relationships woven
with the communities that inhabit it, shaping their identities, loaded with cultural,
social, economic, and political experiences, among others, that give theplace particular characteristics that help to differentiate it from other spaces.
Therefore, the territory is the base and sustenance of the different communities
that inhabit it, where it is determined by them, generating different scales
of understanding, boundaries and collective experiences, that print their quality
of complex socio-ecological space and in constant change, which is why
it is necessary to establish a fraternal dialogue between decision makers and
communities that allow the common good and justice between generations
and achieve the protection of their biological and cultural diversity
Global Survey of Business Ethics 2022-2024 : teaching, research and training. Vol. 1, Introduction and Africa
The Global Survey of Business Ethics 2022-2024 (GSBE) incorporates the full 36 country or regional reports that were collated over three years of investigation by 94 reporters. The sheer volume of content required the publication of three volumes.
This first volume is collated as follows: Volume 1: Introduction to the Global Survey
of Business Ethics 2022-2024 and the African country reports.
This introduction provides a useful context and understanding with which to read
the various countries’ reports: the historic reports that informed and guided the
current GSBE; the process followed in crafting the GSBE content and the process
embarked upon; the various themes that formed the framework of our data; data
collection; the various methodological considerations and methodologies selected
and sample sizes; data analysis; and presentation of the results. Extracts of the survey and various translations are also provided.
The African reports are presented in this volume and include Angola, Burundi,
Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda
Religious communities and ecological sustainability in Southern Africa and beyond
Climate change and environmental degradation are threatening livelihoods in many
parts of the world. To develop pathways into a sustainable future and to achieve
the Sustainable Development Goals, fundamental socioecological transformations
are needed. This process requires not only appropriate policies as well as scientific
knowledge, but necessitates radical paradigm shifts and changed mindsets and
behaviour. Religious communities are crucial stakeholders for achieving these
paradigm shifts: religion shapes social imaginaries and people’s values, and religious
communities have the ability to act as agents of socio-ecological transformation.
This volume seeks to elucidate the role of religious communities for ecological
sustainability with a focus on Southern Africa. The book provides resources for
scholars and students of religion and ecological sustainability, religious communities
and faith-based organizations as well as policymakers, practitioners and NGOs
in the field of sustainable development. It thereby seeks to facilitate knowledge
exchange and to spark further engagement on religion and ecological sustainability
in Southern Africa and beyond
