Impact of Contribution Levels on Pension Fund Performance in Nigeria

Pensions provide a steady income source for employees after retirement, typically determined by factors such as age, salary, and years of service, and are generally paid monthly. They are essential for retirees' financial security and play a significant role in a country’s economic growth, fostering development within the pension sector. This study examines the impact of contribution levels on the performance of pension funds in Nigeria. Using secondary data from twelve licensed Pension Fund Administration companies over a decade (2012–2023), the research applies a purposive sampling method to identify key factors influencing pension fund performance. It specifically investigates the relationship between financial indicators and pension fund outcomes. Interestingly, the findings challenge the common perception that larger funds with higher contributions naturally have superior investment resources and, therefore, better performance. Instead, while fund size and contribution levels are important, they do not directly determine performance; factors such as governance quality, management efficiency, and economic conditions play a more significant role. Pension funds with substantial contributions may still underperform if poorly managed or heavily invested in low-performing sectors. The study suggests that contribution levels should be evaluated in tandem with the macroeconomic context, ensuring performance expectations are not solely based on fund size

The study investigates the dynamic affiliation among financial inclusion, energy poverty, environmental degradation and economic development in the selected African countries using panel data analysis. The study used panel data for Nigeria, Ghana, Gabon and Niger from 2005 to 2021. The study employed fixed effect model. The panel unit root tests show that real gross domestic product, automated teller machine, depositors with commercial banks, and energy poverty are integrated of order one, while CO2 emission is integrated of order zero. The fixed effect model shows that automated teller machine, depositors with commercial banks and CO2 emission have positive and statistically significant effect on the real gross domestic product in Nigeria, Ghana, Gabon and Niger. While Energy poverty has a negative, but statistically significant effect on the real gross domestic product in Nigeria, Ghana and Gabon. The study recommends that in order to reduce energy poverty and environmental degradation in the region, African nation particularly Nigeria, Ghana, Gabon, and Niger should make sure that their citizens have access to affordable, readily available electricity. Policymakers and governments in Africa must create inclusive, well-directed financial policies that take into account the disparities in income, governance, and laws among their nations

The quest for good governance, development, and good life for the people which African leaders hoped will be propelled by democracy prompted them to embrace western liberal democracy However, the objective condition in many African countries reveals fundamental gap between expectations and the realities.  In line with these actualities, this paper examines the differences between Africans desire for democracy and the attendant expectations and the present reality and reasons for the chasm. It examines election and electoral issues as factors in democracy and good governance.  In doing this, the paper adopts content analysis of data gathered essentially from secondary sources and adopts good governance theory. The paper contends that although African leaders and people are desirous of good governance and has put in place democratic structures expected to achieve good governance, these democratic institutions, and structures; the contents and processes have not vivified good governance. It argues that the challenges of democracy and good governance in many African countries are poor election and electoral system. This is because the democratic structures and the manner of conduct of elections characterized by corruption, violence, lack of adequate ideological depth on the part of political parties and service-oriented approach to politics, personalization of, and under-performing institutions among other factors negate the principles of democracy and cannot produce good leadership and good governance. The paper concludes that though multi-party elections have been held in many countries in Africa since 1990, the quality of these elections for the advancement of democracy and by extension good governance has generated concerns and query the sense of optimism for multi-party elections. It therefore argues that for African countries to achieve the desirous goals and benefits of democracy, good governance and development, elections must be free, fair, and conducted regularly. Also, political parties and democratic institutions and structures must be adequately strengthened to function properly.&nbsp

Women in Climate Change Crises Solutions: Centrality and Empowerment for Resilience

This study examines the crucial role played by women in fighting climate change crises and underscores the urgent need for their empowerment. Recognizing the complex challenges faced by women, including health risks, violence, displacement, and limited access to resources, the study delves into the underlying systemic factors intensifying their vulnerability. While adopting Radical Feminism theory as a lens, we acknowledge the importance of considering intersecting factors such as race, class, and geography in understanding women's experiences. Drawing from a comprehensive analysis of secondary sources, the study explores the ways in which women, despite their vulnerability, emerge as key agents of adaptation and resilience. Through their traditional roles in resource management and caregiving, women often lead efforts to mitigate environmental degradation and develop adaptive strategies in the aftermath of crises. Notably, our findings highlight the relationship between female leadership and effective crisis response, as evidenced by the instantaneous and decisive actions taken by states led by women during the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of these insights, the study proposes plausible recommendations for empowering women in the face of climate change crises. These include the establishment of gender-sensitive projects, support for women in green economies, and the promotion of women's participation in decision-making processes. Moreover, the study emphasizes the importance of integrating gender considerations into resilience-building efforts and increasing funding for initiatives addressing gender-specific vulnerabilities. By amplifying the centrality of women in climate change solutions and advocating for their empowerment, the study aims to foster greater resilience in the face of environmental challenges

This paper examines the impact of digital banking on financial inclusion in Nigeria from 2000 to 2022. The objectives of the study focuses on the effects of digital banking adoption, the regulatory environment, internet access, financial literacy, and income levels. The estimation techniques employed include the Johansen co-integration and error correction model. The Johansen co-integration analysis reveals two co-integrating equations at the 5% significance level, indicating long-run relationships between factors influencing financial inclusion in Nigeria, specifically Digital Banking Adoption (DBA), Regulatory Environment (REG), Internet Access (INT), Financial Literacy (FL), and Income Levels (INC). The F-statistic (41.74294) and its significance confirm that the independent variables collectively explain a substantial variation in financial inclusion. The findings show that digital banking adoption, regulatory frameworks, internet access, financial literacy, and income levels significantly influence financial inclusion in Nigeria. The paper concludes that digital banking, supported by regulatory frameworks, internet access, financial literacy, and income levels are essential for enhancing financial inclusion, with a multi-faceted approach needed to foster sustainable economic growth and reduce inequality in Nigeria. Based on the findings, the paper recommends that the government focus on enhancing digital banking, refining regulations, expanding internet access, promoting financial literacy, and addressing income inequality to improve financial inclusion in Nigeria

Salient Foreign Policy implications of Nigeria’s Role in Regional Integration and Peacekeeping in Africa

Nigeria has made more contributions than any other nation on the African continent to the decolonization and complete independence of Africa, in addition to supporting the preservation of political stability, security, and peace in several African nations. Among those nations are Congo, Chad, Ivory Coast, Mali, Liberia, Somalia, and Sierra Leone. Because of this, the global community praised Nigeria's efforts to keep the peace in some of the region’s most volatile areas. Some of these nations that benefited from Nigeria's kind gestures returned them with ingratitude. In light of this, this study looks at Nigeria's regional integration and peacekeeping and their consequences for the nation's foreign policy. The study utilized secondary data obtained from books, newspaper articles, bulletins, textbooks, journal articles, internet resources, and e-books, which were consulted for the purpose of this study. The Hegemonic Stability Theory by Kindleberger (1973) was used to interrogate the concept for understanding Nigeria’s regional integration and peacekeeping efforts. Findings from the study show that Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other West African nations do not recognize Nigeria's contributions to the peace process in the region, which is why they voted against the country’s application for and pursuit of a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council. Consequently, the study recommends that Nigeria should exercise greater diplomacy and reason when determining whether to participate in peacekeeping efforts both within and outside the African continent
