    Get PDF
The present article pretends to analyze the relation of different spiritual entities and their corporal (body-) counterpart, that configure and shape the tzeltal person from the communities of Yajalon (county in northern Chiapas). The objective is to enounce the conceptions which the subjects have about the body and his animic entities that reside within: amongst others, the ch’ulel and lab creatures. With the animic entities the person configures itself with the only purpose to trace the line of his life and his destiny in the Balumilal – which means Earth and Cosmos. It is not surprising that the sacred language –K’opontik Dios-, in the prayers and songs of different religious and therapeutic rituals, establishes a parallelism between the human body and the humanized Earth. The earth is perceived as a space which encloses an extraordinary quantity of supernatural beings (yalak’ and chambalam) and at the same time, as one that tolerates humans and animals on its surface.

This text approaches the concept of sexual person among Toba people, qom, of the Argentinean Chaco. It analyzes some of the vital components that constitute the person —humor, names, etc.— and the human and non human actions that take part in the formation of the sexual person. After revising the toba conceptions of gestation, the constitution of the ‘emotion-thoughts’ and the ritual of puberty, it approaches the way in whichqom people visualize the importance of sexuality in the constitution of a person. Finally, the study of the activities and responsibilities of each gender will allow to show how the sexual person does not arise as thus just by consequence of gestation, but is created throughout the entire life.

The present paper studies cultural representations of person among Yucatec Mayas. The study is focussed on the notion of person starting from the conceptual characteristics contained in the vocabulary. The paper attempts to give a semantic point of view of the category of person, considering the meaning of the words used to identify the different components of the human being taken as an individual. Some of the essential concepts that refer to the diverse components of the individual human being are identified here. Among the modern Peninsular Mayas, the human being is conceived as a unit of wíinkilil –body–, pixán –soul–, and óol –spirit. This conception somewhat differs from the idea that has been transmitted by Colonial Maya testimonies and by other people speaking Mayan languages. Among other things, this happens because of the absence, among Peninsular Mayas, of an “animal companion”, idea which is closely related to the individual’s life.

For the study of the notion of person in mam — indigenous people from Mesoamerica— I considered it important, from the methodological point of view, to part from the description of the rituals dedicated to the Siembra del niño —“Seedtime of the offspring”— and the Siembra del ombligo —“Seedtime of the navel”—. Both ritual are practiced on the body of newborn. I link these rituals with the myth of the creation of the human being within the mam with the objective of contextualizing their notion of person. Seedtime of the navel is a task reserved to the b'etx'el or midwife, while the propitiatory ritual or Ritual de la cruz corresponds to chiman, that is to say, to ajq'ij. The basic concepts of the Ritual de la cruz are the following: xochil, which defines the sacred place where to deposit the crosses of the family, the community and those belonging to the region; generally they are located in sacred places as lagoons, hills, volcanos and rivers; and pusunke, the ceremonial drink, is offered to the cross and the animic entities of the baptized ones. The problems to understand the mam conception of person are very complex for several reasons, but the basic problem is still the lack of studies and an specific methodology to approach this issue. The concepts related to the notion of person in these pages are, for reasons of translation, obviously only an aproximation. Therefore, I present both mam rituals, as well as the myth of creation of the humanity, as a way to approach the understanding of the subject. Other related subjects are added, that should be further investigated in the future such as: a) the principle of interchange and reciprocity; b) the religious political hierarchy, c) the use and handling of time and space in the ritual calendar. Specialists termed this ritual “propitiatory ritual”, while mam people called it Siembra de la cruz and in another region is called Ritual de la cruz. The chiman´s lexicon b´etx´el is related to the way in which a mam speaks to his grandfathers, but in the southern mam region of Guatemala, this term is used in a reciprocal way in grandfathers - grandson kinship relations; while across the mountain and in the central mam region of Chiapas, México, the term used is b'etx’el or yoq´ol, taking the meaning of “who gives massages” o “who pulses with her hands”, same word that designates the midwife.

Post-revolutionary Mexican historiography has fostered a legend that blames to a high degree to the delimiting and colonizing companies (1875-1902) of appropriating the communal lands, supported by the federal judicial apparatus and taking advantage of the laws on boundaries of vacant land of the Porfiriato (1876-1910).La historiografía mexicana posrevolucionaria ha fomentado una leyenda que responsabiliza en alto grado a las compañías deslindadoras y colonizadoras (1875-1902) de apropiarse las tierras comunales, apoyadas por el aparato judicial federal y aprovechando las leyes sobre deslindes de terrenos baldíos del Porfiriato (1876-1910). &nbsp

In the world view of the nahua population of San Sebastian Tlacotepec, a village localized in the region denominated Sierra Negra in the state of Puebla, the “notion of person” is one of the principals elements necessary to understand the concept of ixtlamatki, “ the one who knows how to see”, ritual specialist in charge of health problems en cases like loss of soul, witchcraft or when the alter ego has been hurt. Beginning with the analysis of his attributes, which define him as special human being, we come closer to understand his function as intermediary between the human world and the “other world”; his power as “soul retriever” and other special abilities, for example, his capacity of transforming himself as well as his faculty to act intentionally in his dreams.

    Get PDF
The way in which identity of the individuals is constructed, as well their conformation as a person is rarely commented. The following text will analyze, from the perspective of the tanathropología, the way that people change when being subject to alterations, transforming their paper within society and, in some cases, their cultural references; resulting a sort of cultural or personal death. This work tries to shed light on the sociocultural processes that are part of the construction and reconstruction of the individual- and group identityPocas veces se habla de la forma en que se va construyendo la identidad de los individuos, tampoco de su conformación como personas.

This article  analyzes the two faces of indigenism in Los Altos de Chiapas during the government of Efraín Gutiérrez (1936-1940) in the state: on the one hand, indigenism by the federal government, through the Department of Indigenous Affairs (DAI); on the other, that of the state government, through the Department of Social Action, Culture and Indigenous Protection (DASCPI). While the first sought the incursion of post-revolutionary political action in regions that were still controlled by local groups of power little related to President Lázaro Cárdenas, the second undertook the transformation of local power structures to open the doors to a mestizo and indigenous sector originally from the region, who had until then been marginalized from public office. During these years, this sector would go on to renew the political class in Chiapas.

The proposal of this paper is to identify the composition of the raramuri person and, to describe each part of its components. Beyond recognizing the notion of the body and the entities that animate it, this investigation emphasizes those relations that allow new emotional, cognitive and oniric components to be formed. The outcoming of the soul is a fundamental axis in the Raramuri thought by which the status of the health-illness and life-death is explained. The following ethnographic text pretends to contribute to the anthropological knowledge about the cultures in northern, particularly north-western, Mexico.
