TRADITIONAL FASHION INDUSTRY AND JUKUN CULTURE, NORTH CENTRAL NIGERIA
This is an enterprise devoted to the business of making and selling of clothes among the Jukun and Abakwariga in North Central Nigeria. The traditional fashion industry is cottage industry not modern fashion industry and it forms part of larger social and cultural phenomenon known as Kyadzwe. It is a concept that embraces not only the fashion business but arts and craft of fashion. It involves not only production (Weaving, dyeing and beating) but also selling and wearing. The industry distinguishes between the fashions of AkuUka and other notable as well as ordinary people. In other words, the colour for Aku is quite different from the colour of ordinary people. Fashon is simply defined as the styles of clothing and accessories worn at any given time by group of people that is Jukun and Abakwariga. Thus, every ethnic or religious group has their peculiar cultural clothes which are symbols of their cultural heritage. In the case of Jukun people of Central Nigeria, they are known for their “Akya” wrapper clothes which are confined to them alone. Therefore, the fundamental concern of this paper is the methods and processes involved in the production of Jukun “Adire” clothes so to speak; Challenges in the production and marketing. Then, finally, the paper focuses on the cultural, political and economic importance of “Adire” cloth to the Jukun and Abakwariga
SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN THE CLASSROOM
This paper examines the acquisition of Second Language in the classroom. The paper cites the ongoing increase of second language research and encourages educators to apply the more relevant research to their classroom methodology. Second language acquisition refers to what learners do; it does not refer to practices in language teaching, although teaching can affect acquisition. The term acquisition was originally used to emphasise the non-conscious nature of the learning process, but in recent years, learning and acquisition have become largely synonymous. In conclusion, there has been much debate about exactly how language is learned, and many issues are still unresolved. There are many theories of second language acquisition, but none is accepted as a complete explanation by all second language researchers. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field of second language acquisition, the researcher used to read for pleasure or what some refer to as extensive reading or free voluntary reading technique in order to solve some of these unresolved issues about the acquisition of second language in the classroom
TRENDS IN CHILD MARRIAGE IN AKURE METROPOLIS, ONDO STATE, NIGERIA
Child-marriage is a global problem that cuts across countries, religions, and ethnicities. Despite national laws and international protocols forbidding early marriage, this phenomenon is still widespread in many developing countries with a high prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Nigeria, where it still persists. This study examines the trends in child-marriage in Akure metropolis, Ondo State, Nigeria, and the strategies for its prevention. Using Key Informants Interviews (IKIs), the study shows the common trend is that of the parents or relatives promising in marriage their under-aged daughters or girls to their family-friends, neighbours, or associates as young wives to repay debts, settle disputes, or seal social, economic, and political alliances in order to deepen friendly relations with associates. The study concludes that the imposition of a marriage partner on under-aged daughters and girls who are in no way ready for married life, and who early-marriage can deprive of freedom, opportunities for personal development, and other human rights including health and well-being, education, and participation in civic life, appears to nullify the goals of the child’s core protections guaranteed by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. To tackle this challenging phenomenon, concerted efforts to formulate, and implement relevant policies and strategies are urgently needed. Actions to fulfill or restore the rights of those already married should go hand in hand with preventive actions to ensure that all of the intervention-mechanisms are available to both married and unmarried girls
SUPPLIER-INDUCED DEMAND AND HEALTHCARE IN LOKOJA
This study investigates the existence of supplier-induced demand for healthcare in Nigeria’s healthcare system where private healthcare provision and fee-for-service mode of payment are order of the day. Using primary data sourced from 379 respondents, the study estimates Linear Probability Model (LPM), to establish the relationship between supplier inducement and demand for healthcare. Findings from the study revealed that there is no statistically significant evidence to suggest the existence of supplier-induced demand for healthcare among the privately-owned hospitals in Lokoja. However, the study finds education and enrolment in health insurance to be negatively and statistically significantly correlated with supplier inducement. Having high education and enrolment in the health insurance scheme curtail the probability of receiving dubious care. Therefore, this research recommends, among others, that the government should make high education more accessible to the citizens by way of subsidizing tuition fees charged by universities, and providing soft education loans to eligible citizens. It recommends further that governments at all levels should provide health insurance for all
Effects of Retrenchment on the Morale of Employees of Glo Nigeria Limited
The study examined the post-retrenchment effects on employees using the case of the GLO Nigeria. The study investigated the causes and effects of organizational retrenchment. It concentrated on the effects of retrenchment on both survivors (those who remain in the organization after the retrenchment) and the organization itself. Because retrenchment can have positive or bad consequences, there are many factors at play in the diverse consequences. These background variables were examined from both an organizational and an individual standpoint in the study. The study's main purpose was to see how retrenchment affected employees, with a focus on GLO Nigeria employees. The study's specific goals were to see how retrenchment in Telekom Nigeria affected employee morale and how the retrenchment process affected job security for those who survived. A descriptive survey was used to conduct the study, which was regarded the most appropriate method because it gives in-depth information about the issue. From a total of 1120 employees, 112 were selected using a stratified random selection approach. Semi-structured questions were developed based on the literature review and administered to respondents using the drop-and-pick method. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the data's mean scores and standard deviations. Frequency tables and graphs were used to present the data. According to the findings, GLO Nigeria's retrenchment procedure had a negative influence on the morale and job security of surviving staff
The Problems of Oral Production of Speech Sounds in the Teaching and Learning of English Grammar
The work is principally concerned with the problems of oral production of speech sounds in the teaching and learning of English Grammar. Obviously, there are phonological rules that guide the oral production of speech sounds just as there are grammatical rules that guide the formation of words and sentences. It is absolutely necessary to examine how the oral production of speech sounds affects the teaching and learning of English Grammar. This, therefore, accounts for the much attention given to the pronunciation principles in this research work. Ordinarily, it would have been better for words to be pronounced the way they are spelt and written, but this is not always the case. Phonemic transcription brings out clearly the correct pronunciation of the word and the correct pronunciation goes a long way to provide the clue for the proper classification of the word. This fact is clearly illustrated in such words as “record”, “rebel”, “import” and a number of other words which have dual membership, meaning and function. Therefore, the correct pronunciation of such words will help the learner to understand the parts of speech to which a word belongs and the function it performs. There are words that look alike and are similar in spellings, but it is through correct pronunciation of these words that they can be classified in terms of function and meaning. Sentences, of course, have distinguishing features, according to their types and the correct oral presentation of the sentences projects the type, function and structure easily. The implications of correct pronunciation in the teaching and learning of English grammar is therefore, very important for fruitful grammatical studies
ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION, TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS (TNCS) AND DEVELOPMENT EQUATION IN THE NIGER DELTA
Against the need to address developmental challenges in Nigeria, this study focusing on the Niger Delta andusing the Stakeholder theory as a framework for analysis examined how TNCshinder the development in the NigerDelta region through environmental degradation. Data collected through secondary sources revealed that activities and operations of oil TNCs negatively affect the environment. The findings of the study show that their unsafe operations destroy people's means of livelihood, damage the health of the environment and negatively impact the economic growth and development of the region. What is sadder in this situation is that the government has not been effective in monitoring and regulating their activities to minimize the negative impact of their operations on the environment, it is in this regard that it is recommended among other things, that government must insist that TNCs adopt international best practices and innovation in their operations, and beyond political speeches and conference communiqué government must also be proactive in enacting and implementing relevant environmental laws and policies that will help in minimizing the harm done to the Environmentenvironment
AJAGBO: A TRADO-MUSICOLOGICAL DIMENSION TO CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN INFRASTRUCTURE PLANNIG AMONG THE AKOKO SPEAKING PEOPLE OF SOUTH-WESTERN NIGERIA
Diverse studies conducted in the field of conflict management have centered on modern music with little attention to the trado[1]musicological dimension to conflict management as it affects infrastructural planning. This study examined the role of traditional music in conflict management on the performance in 'Ajagbo' a traditional music as it affects infrastructure planning among the Akoko people of South-western Nigeria. It examined the trado-musical approach to managing conflict amongthe Akoko people of Nigeria and reviewed its relevance within the annual yam festival, the opportunities and challenges. The study also analysed the issues of musical style, context, and content, dressing, timing, and the selection of the drum. Pacifism theory was used to advance the argument in favour of peaceful conflict resolution strategies. This empirical study used purposive sampling technique in collecting relevant qualitative data through in[1]depth interviews and focus group discussions. The study revealed that Ajagbo music has wide-spread benefits in resolving conflicts in Akokoland, as the contents of the music enabled the audience to appreciate the need for peaceful reconciliation. Mass emigration of youths and introduction of modern musical instruments that is shifting people' attention from the contents of the music are the main challenges of Ajagbo music. The study concluded that Ajagbo music is very potent in conflict management in Akokoland. Strategies were proposed to address identified challenges on the therapeutic effects of Ajagbo music in conflict management in Akokoland
THE RISE OF ETHNIC MILITIA, BANDITRY AND IMPLICATION ON NATIONAL SECURITY IN NIGERIA
Nigeria is experiencing increasing waves of ethnic conflicts,Since 2015 while its leaders engage in a series of ‘dialogue of the deaf’. For now, a great deal of literature has explored the causes of ethnic crisis and unsuitable solutions are being proposed for a wrongly diagnosed structural social malaise. Thus, this article examines the fundamental causes of ethnic violence, being championed by the various ethnic militia movements in post[1]military Nigeria, by emphasizing the impacts of institutional failure. Hence, it contends that the extreme dissatisfactions of some ethnic nationalities with the Nigerian post-colonial state are clear manifestations of the government failure to provide the necessary infrastructure and enabling environment required to ease the inordinate human degradation, disillusionment, anger, rural decay and high crime wave prevailing in the country. Thus, ethnic such as IPOB,OPC violence is created and maintained by militia movements in a vicious circle of frustration and repression as the Nigerian leadership tries to consolidate itself in power while the marginalized categories (ethnic minorities) of the population claim for their fair share in national resources. Frustration aggression theory and Relative deprivation theory was used. Finally, the study suggests that for the interest of peace and stability, there is the urgent need for immediate redress to the inherent lapses in Nigeria’s inherited federal structure, through a programmed professional participation that would be reflective of its peculiar socio-historical experiences
THE AFRICAN UNION AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN AFRICA: A STUDY OF THE DARFUR CRISIS
The research study evaluated the role of African Union in resolving the Darfur crisis of Sudan. The study made used of only secondary source of data, exploring various literatures on the issue from scholars. The functionalism theory of international relations was adopted and argued that African Union intervened in the Darfur crisis because the nature of the crisis demanded international collaboration and support which the Sudanese Government did not had the capacity to manage the crisis. It was revealed that the Darfur crisis which lasted between 2004 and 2011 ensued as the result of political subjugation, economic exploitation and underdevelopment of the Darfur region of Sudan. The People Southern Sudanese considered these trends as injustice and as such they violently revolted against the Sudanese Government with the agitation for independence. The wanton destructive nature of the crisis necessitated the intervention of the international community. The study revealed that African Union was the first body to intervene in the crisis through mediation and sending of troops in July 2004 before the United Nations took over the mission in 31st December, 2007. The study showed that even after United Nations took over the Peace keeping operation, African Union still made significant contributions in terms of troops, finance, and humanitarian services. It was concluded that despite the weaknesses of African Union in managing the conflict, the success story of United Nations in Darfur region cannot be analyzed without taking into cognizes the effort of African Union put in the crisis. Therefore, it was recommended that African Union should be proactive and timely in intervening in conflict in the continent so as to avoid escalation
