GLOBALIZATION, POST-COLONIZING MIGRATION AND NEO-SLAVERY: THE SOCIO-POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS TO TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY AFRICAN STATES

    Get PDF
Globalization has been happening for millennia. Hence, it is argued to be a historical process and not a relatively new phenomenon, pointing out the evolution of global history at how the progression of human development overtime has contributed to broader societal advancement through the discovery of new and constantly improving technologies on one hand, but has been a highly uneven process characterized by unequal distribution of power, violence, discrimination and oppression on the other hand. In essence, it is argued by imperialists that it provides a historical response to contemporary questions surrounding issues of underdevelopment and global inequality. My paper argues that the process of decolonization, especially in Africa was incomplete and that former colonies were excluded from key economic decisions that came to have severe implications for their future attempts at developing their economies, which got worse with globalization. It articulates these discrepancies using the theoretical framework of dependency theory as analytical tool to understand current cause of global inequality, which has given rise to worst migration problems of 21st century and why the African continent is in a continual state of backwardness and ridden by civil wars, suffering from malnutrition, disease and social conflicts

    No full text
The objective of this paper was to ascertain whether or not the deployment of BVAS machines actually enhanced elections integrity during the 2023 general election in Kogi state, Nigeria. To achieve this objective, the paper deployed Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) as a framework of analysis and collected data from primary sources such as Structured Questionnaire (SQ) and secondary sources such as books, journals, and web-based, materials among others. Data collected via SQ were analysed using descriptive statistics while research hypothesis was tested at 5% level of significance using non-parametric statistics (chi-square). The results of the test of hypothesis revealed that the deployment and use of BVAS machines did not improve the integrity of the 2023 general election in Kogi state, Nigeria. Further findings reveal that INEC actually failed to upload the poll results, especially the presidential election results on the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal in real-time as well as the unprecedented level of electoral malpractices that characterised the process. Based on these finding, the paper concludes that, if such practices are not urgently addressed; democracy may not be the only casualty as the Nigerian state may eventually collapse under the unenviable weight of electoral violence consequent upon incessant electoral irregularities. Based on this conclusion, the paper recommends among others that, INEC should live up to its name by being independent and ensure it conducts elections without fear or favour and in accordance with the provisions of the electoral law

This study explores the profound impact of accessibility to menstrual products on the health and education of young girls. The problem is framed around the significant barriers young girls face in accessing safe, affordable, and effective menstrual products, leading to severe health implications and educational setbacks. Using a theoretical framework that integrates gender inequality and social determinants of health, this research investigates the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of menstrual health. Employing quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection, the study utilized 363 questionnaires and 10 in-depth interview which ensured the study gathered rich and robust data from young girls and women, capturing their personal experiences and struggles with menstrual hygiene management. The findings reveal that inadequate access to menstrual products often results in reproductive tract infections and other health complications due to poor hygiene practices. Educationally, many girls miss school during their periods, leading to lower academic performance and widening gender disparities. The pervasive stigma and social taboos surrounding menstruation further exacerbate psychological distress and social exclusion. Based on these findings, the study recommends comprehensive policy interventions to ensure the availability of menstrual products, community engagement to break down stigmas, and education programs to promote menstrual health awareness. This research highlights the critical importance of accessible menstrual products in enhancing the overall well-being of young girls, advocating for sustained efforts to eliminate barriers and promote gender equality, thereby enabling young girls to lead healthier, more empowered lives

The practice of democracy in Nigeria has been rippled with many challenges especially, the lack of democratic culture largely due to long military rule before the year 1999. It is against this background, that this article discusses the African Charter on Democracy, Election and Governance (ACDEG) and Constitutionalism in Nigeria by examining the practice of democracy in Nigeria vis-à-vis the electoral processes and governance in Nigeria. Historical methodology was adopted in this study relying on primary and secondary sources of data. From the study, there is need for the establishment of viable democratic structures in Nigeria anchored on constitutionalism in line with the provisions of the ACDEG. The article therefore, submits that the ACDEG should not only be made justifiable but a mechanism for monitoring compliance among African nations be put in place like the case of African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) in the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) initiative. There should be a mechanism for monitoring, evaluation and enforcement of the ACDEG in Nigeria in order to realize the objectives of the ACDEG.&nbsp

    Get PDF
Previous studies mainly focused on the discrimination against women in Nigerian society (including labour relations) without emphasis to the position of international law, and international law is the global norm. This is the gap that this paper seeks to fill in literature regarding discriminatory practices against women in labour relations in Nigeria. The paper adopts face-to-face interview as an instrument of data collection to get opinion of some expertise on gender and international law with a triangulation of secondary sources of information. The paper adopts interrogative technique of qualitative data analysis and argued that International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Right; and the 1979 United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms Discrimination Against Women are legal instruments of international law against discrimination of women in labour relations. It is upon these global legal norms that the Nigeria Constitution and the Nigerian Labour Act derived it principles from. It is revealed that the discrimination against women in labour relation is grounded in unwritten Conventions, religion and tradition of the working places. Employer-employee relation is clearly defined under the international law which is in line with the Nigerian Labour Law. Therefore, any contractual agreement aims at discriminating workers on the basis of their sex amount to an aberrational act. The paper has equally discovered that the fear of losing one’s job often makes women to work under any condition whatsoever which is different from the position of international law. The paper has recommended that the rights and privileges provided under the Labour Act are balanced to all citizens and as such, the onus lies in the hands of women themselves to fight against discrimination at work plac

THE RISE OF ETHNIC MILITIA, BANDITRY AND IMPLICATION ON NATIONAL SECURITY IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
Nigeria is experiencing increasing waves of ethnic conflicts,Since 2015 while its leaders engage in a series of ‘dialogue of the deaf’. For now, a great deal of literature has explored the causes of ethnic crisis and unsuitable solutions are being proposed for a wrongly diagnosed structural social malaise. Thus, this article examines the fundamental causes of ethnic violence, being championed by the various ethnic militia movements in post[1]military Nigeria, by emphasizing the impacts of institutional failure. Hence, it contends that the extreme dissatisfactions of some ethnic nationalities with the Nigerian post-colonial state are clear manifestations of the government failure to provide the necessary infrastructure and enabling environment required to ease the inordinate human degradation, disillusionment, anger, rural decay and high crime wave prevailing in the country. Thus, ethnic such as IPOB,OPC violence is created and maintained by militia movements in a vicious circle of frustration and repression as the Nigerian leadership tries to consolidate itself in power while the marginalized categories (ethnic minorities) of the population claim for their fair share in national resources. Frustration aggression theory and Relative deprivation theory was used. Finally, the study suggests that for the interest of peace and stability, there is the urgent need for immediate redress to the inherent lapses in Nigeria’s inherited federal structure, through a programmed professional participation that would be reflective of its peculiar socio-historical experiences
