The study is on the Analysis of rainfall onset, cessation and length of the growing season and its variability effect on crop production in Karasuwa Local Government Area, Yobe State, Nigeria. The study used secondary data that collected from NIMET office, Nguru station. The data is for mean monthly rainfall from 1992-2022. The data were analyzed using Walter 1967 method of calculating onset, cessation data and length of the growing season. The result of the study reveals that rainfall variability leads to cause rainfall late onset, early cessation and shortened the length of the growing season in the study area. The earliest onset dates for rainfall in the study area was early onset date in 30 May 2002 from the 30 years of the study. The late onset date within the 30 years of study is 9 July which usually occurs in 1992, 1993, 2009 and 2015 respectively. On 4th August 2011 is the earliest cessation date at Karasuwa Local Government Area that occurred and the late cessation date of rain occur on 28 October 2019 which is the highest within the 30 years of the study. the lowest length of the growing season is determining on 2004 (46 days), 2007 (51 days), 2015 (56days) and other years like 1993, 1995, 1998, 2001,2008, 2009, and 2020 respectively which the length of the growing season is below average and it affect the crop production in the study area. The study recommend Farmers should change/shift their planting period to appropriate time since the onset date has changed in order to avoid crop damage at the early stage, Government should provide the farmers with early matured crop and improved crop varieties, mitigation/adaptation action is highly needed in order to cope with the problem

    Get PDF
Nigeria's jobless rate—especially for young people—has been increasing to the point where it is overwhelming and too much to bear in light of the nation's security and socioeconomic problems. Consequently, in order to address security concerns, this paper investigates the government's entrepreneurial option. This was accomplished by compiling secondary data from qualitative and quantitative studies and utilizing the theoretical framework of empowerment theory. The study finds that Nigeria's economy regrettably still has a high rate of youth unemployment, reaching up to 53%, despite the frantic entrepreneurship aimed at ending unemployment. This high rate of youth unemployment is directly linked to the country's growing security issues. It is obvious that insufficient security, erratic power supplies, and other problems must exist before the private sector can get involved in this. Infrastructure needs to be addressed. If the relevant authorities do not act quickly to create jobs, crime will rise and public resentment will grow. Security issues will become the only game in town

This study evaluates the utilization and impact of women empowerment programs on poverty alleviation in the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State, Nigeria. It assesses the implementation and effectiveness of these programs in enhancing the socio-economic conditions of women in the region, where poverty is prevalent, especially among women who have historically faced marginalization in accessing resources, education, and economic opportunities. The empowerment programs, including vocational training, microfinance schemes, entrepreneurship development, and educational initiatives, aim to improve women’s economic independence. Findings indicate that while some programs have positively impacted income generation and living standards, significant challenges persist. These challenges include inadequate funding, cultural barriers, and limited market access for women entrepreneurs. Additionally, the sustainability of these initiatives is often compromised by inconsistent policy implementation and a lack of ongoing support from both governmental and non-governmental organizations. The study highlights the need for a holistic approach to women’s empowerment, addressing the root causes of poverty and ensuring continuous access to resources and opportunities for lasting economic independence. Recommendations include increased funding, improved monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and greater community involvement to ensure that empowerment programs are responsive to the specific needs of women in the Central Senatorial District. Ultimately, while women empowerment programs hold promise for poverty alleviation, their success depends on sustained efforts, strategic planning, and a comprehensive approach to tackling the broader socio-economic challenges facing women in the region

    Get PDF
In October 2022, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued directives regarding introducing new naira notes to replace the current denominations of 200, 500, and 1,000 naira notes. This policy, implemented in January 2023, had implications for the 2023 general elections. This paper investigated the introduction of new naira notes and their implications for the 2023 general elections. The paper employed a qualitative approach, utilizing secondary data from a comprehensive review of academic journals, case reports, and other online sources. The rational choice theory was used to guide the study. The findings revealed that introducing the new naira notes generated many reactions among political elites and citizens. While some argued that the policy would help curb vote buying, others argued that it would only make buying votes more difficult and expensive. The findings also revealed that despite the significant reduction in the rate of vote buying in the 2023 general elections, vote buying persists. This suggests that more than the naira redesign policy is needed to curb vote buying in the country. The paper concludes that voter education is crucial to curbing the incessant buying and selling of votes that have characterized most general elections in Nigeria. The electoral body and the government should embark on an aggressive voter education campaign to discourage vote-selling and buying

This research focuses on global climate change and adaptation strategies. Climate change globally has become one of the shocking certainties of the 21st era and it has made scientists to raise the need to drop worldwide temperatures further by 0.5 °C which makes a substantial difference in some areas of the world, particularly developing countries that are faced with the greater threat of climate change.  Developing States have become exposed to the damaging effects of climate change because of their varied climatic regions and these have affected their food production activities due to the deforestation problem, desertification, soil degradation, erosion, flooding, general habitat loss, depletion of natural resources etc. This study therefore attempts to examine the extent to which continuous climate change has affected the globe and how institutional frameworks have addressed the current situation in ensuring effective control across the globe. The research employed purely on secondary means to gathered data. This research structures its opinions with the human security model as its theoretical framework. Major findings showed that environmental degradation, desertification caused by climate change had greatly stunted agricultural production and government rules universally; climate change has increased food uncertainty, poor statistical analysis and implementation by government. The paper recommends that government should provide alternative means   like renewable energy, reduction of industrial carbons in tackling the menace of climate change globally, there should be reduction of emission of greenhouse gases by stopping deforestation, the use of high yield and disease tolerant crops, and also crops adaptable to high level of weather conditions, there should be easy accessible information on climate change effects to the public

Access to reliable health information source builds knowledge that individuals need to take informed decisions that will promote their health and well-being. Inadequate/lack of access to reputable information creates a gap in knowledge of health problems, ultimately leading to poor health decisions and outcomes. In Nigeria, there are several sources such as health workers, mass media, textbooks and internet through which health information are disseminated to the public and patients, but libraries and librarians are often not considered as part of the explicit plan to advance the health of the populace. The paper therefore provides an overview of the role that libraries could play to promote diffusion of information for quality health care in Nigeria drawing from examples of such practices in developed countries. Librarians as repositories of knowledge could be involved in helping the public to get high quality consumer health information, in providing patients’ education and in imparting information literacy skills which avails individuals the understanding of their health status, and take appropriate actions to prevent and control diseases. Information prescription entails the librarians providing personalized or customized information to patients on the request of the consulting physicians thereby improving patients’ ability to manage and control his/her medical condition. The library could further engage in outreach to take health information to grassroots and are also relevant in emergency response and preparedness
