    Migration and Brexit

    Get PDF
This article aims to indicate the role and importance of migration issues in the British social and political discourse in the period before Brexit. The article consists of three main parts. The first part adumbrates basic information about immigration to the UK, the scale and intensity of the phenomenon. It is pointed out here that the United Kingdom is currently ranked among the group of EU countries with the highest influx of foreigners. The second part focuses on the role and importance of immigration in the British social and political discourse. It is noted here that since the turn of the twentieth century the issue of immigration in the UK has gained the status of one of the key social and political issues. At the same time, compared with many other countries, Great Britain is today perceived as a country much more reluctant to immigrants. The third part presents the contribution of immigrants from European Union countries to the social and economic development of Great Britain. It is emphasized here that generally immigration from European Union countries has a positive, though in some areas slight impact on the British economy and the level of social development

Lupta afro-americanilor in Statele Unite – Civil power or Black Power?

    Get PDF
The society we live in today has been profundly shaped by the clash of cultures and civilizations and more recently, by ideological conflicts. It is also the case of the United States of America, whose history and evolution was marked by the continuous reglementations of the structure and relations between the white americans and the afro-americans: the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power movement The following paper aims to explore this issue through the lenses of two important race theories, both sharing a very important concept when discussig racial conflict -double consciousness, each of them being linked to a main afro-american movement in the USA. I shall try to understand how the concept of race and the attempts to fight racism within the american society in the 20th century, have influenced the political discourse and also, the social and cultural context, throughout the last decades. In doing so, i will draw inspiration from the socio-historical constructivist race theory in explaining the evolution and impact of the Civil Rights Movement, and from Fanon’s critical theory in exploring the evolution and the outcome of the Black Power Movement. The main thesis of this paper is that, starting with the end of the 19th century, all the eliberation and empowerment efforts of the black community in the american society, coagulated in the mentioned ideological movements, had a powerfull impact on the social, cultural and political evolution of the United States, materialised in the introduction of Black Studies in universities, political representation and electoral winnings – culminating with the election of Barack Obama as the President of the USA

This paper examines two strategies that United States can use in order to block the rise of China as a regional hegemon in North-East Asia. The two strategies are balancing and buck-passing and I argue that the first is better for United States than the second. After these two strategies will be presented followsthe demonstration that China is a potential hegemon in North-East Asia and that the other powers in the region ar too weak to oppose, and finally, an explanation of the fact will be provided that why balancing is better for USA in this case than the buck-passing.Adrian Eugen Preda is a first year student at Security and Diplomacy Master, National School of Political and Administrative Studies from Bucharest. Exploatarea bunurilor limitate in termenii dreptatii intergenerationale. Precautie sau libera utilizare? Analiza normativa a Legii Protectiei Mediului si a Codului Silvic

The aim of this study is to analyse the way in which compensations and principles of intergenerational justice function toward the environment issues. I will analyse the capacities of environment policies to generate tools for protecting and preserving the limited goods such that to fulfil both the prerogatives of intergenerational principles and to secure goods demanding of the next generations(intergenerational criterion). The main assumption is that the next generatons will have a claim for environment resources to maintain their lives and for economic, social, technological development, at least in the same measure as the present generations. So through normative theories I will argue that next generations cannot determine the amount of inherited resources and the responsability lies on actual generations, to assume their successors quality and level of welfare, therefore is a need to institute some compensations and policies of fairness to restrict the abusive exploitation, to imply pecuniary and moral costs for today?s citizens and to guarantee a minimal level of the next generations welfare by maintaining a good environment quality

Educatia copiilor supradotati in România. O analiza suficientarista a sistemului educational romanesc

    Get PDF
The aim of this article is to investigate the problem of gifted children in the Romanian educational system, analyzing it through the perspective of the normative model of sufficientarianism. I start my argumentation from the assumption that, in the sufficientarian Romanian educational system, while trying to prioritize the distribution of benefits to the needs of children suffering from various forms of disability, the existence of the gifted and children with high potential is not taken into account. And these children have special educational needs of their own. At the same time, I intend to verify if there is at least one sufficientarian model that could solve the problem of distribution towards gifted children. For doing that, I will compare 3 sufficentarian distributive models, closely following the matter at hand

România – Regim Hibrid? Rolul social-democratilor în traiectoria unei democratizari (1990–1996)

    Get PDF
Today, many European countries (Hungary, Poland, Austria, Italy) are becoming part of an illiberal wave that threatens to modify completely the political and economic order of the European Union. Romania is not yet a member of this illiberal club, but according to several authors (Levitsky, Way, Zakaria, Bozoki), started its postcommunist evolution by being, for seven years, a hybrid regime. The main goal of this article is to determine whether this verdict is correct or not. A secondary goal is to observe the manner in which the ideological identity of the social-democratic party changed in these seven years (1990–1996). The successor and heir of the communist party that ruled Romania for more than 40 years, this party, under three different forms, was in power in the analysed period. Thus, in order to draw the map of the evolution of the Romanian political regime, we must focus on policies and events shaped by the social-democrats. During this process, we will also observe how the transition towards democracy was influenced by external factors, highlighting the fact that in the 1990s, approaching the membership of the European Union automatically meant distancing from the area of the hybrid regimes

Formal and Informal Rules in the Debate Over the Effectiveness of Institutions

    Get PDF
The perspective of institutions as equilibria integrates the approache of institutions as rules, which is much more comprehensive in relation to the dynamics of the preferences of individuals and the way in which they relate to rules, in various situations. I show that equilibrium depends both on the behaviour of actors and the institutions that govern – it is adjusted from within the institution but not exclusively by its formal rules, but by the fact that rational and free individuals choose to comply with the rules.I empashize that there are situations where equilibria are determined by several types of rules: formal and informal. In some cases, equilibria determined by informal rules undermine those resulting from formal rules, while in other cases, the two complete each other and maintain the institution. Thus, formal rules are not necessarily the rules in use as well, therefore a more appropriate analysis of institutions should lay out what type of rules is more influential: formal or informal

Populist-Nationalist Discourse in the European Periphery. The Case of Romania

    Get PDF
Our article focuses on the reproductive dynamics of the populist nationalist discourse present in Romanian social media. We are particularly interested in exploring the possible emergence of a specific Eastern-European type of right wing populism, reflected by the authoritarian politics professed by Viktor Orban, Andrej Duda, Robert Fico or, in Romania, Traian Bãsescu and the PMP (Popular Movement Party). Thus, in the first part of our article we are exploring the main theoretical discussions regarding populism in general and its Eastern European manifestation in particular
