Charting scenarios : a framework for uncertainty visualization in data journalism practice
Like other fields, data journalism faces the fundamental challenge of conveying uncertainty to the audience. However, unlike scientific communication, data journalism must engage a broad audience with highly variable levels of prior topic-related, statistical, and methodological knowledge. To structure examples and develop better strategies for visualizing uncertainty it is useful to distinguish different types of uncertainty that commonly arise in journalistic contexts. For this purpose we propose a framework that identifies seven key scenarios: Spatial, Sampling, Forecast, Classification, Definite Ranges, Missing Data, and Reconstructed Past. Each scenario highlights a distinct situation where uncertainty plays a crucial role—whether in mapping environmental risks, interpreting election polls, projecting future outcomes, or reconstructing data about historical events. By systematically examining these uncertainty scenarios, this work seeks to better support data journalists in dealing with uncertainty, encourage transparent reporting and promote critical engagement with data-driven narratives.Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und RaumfahrtPeerReviewe
Investigating resolution strategies for workspace-occlusion in augmented virtuality
Augmented Virtuality integrates physical content into virtual environments, but the occlusion of physical by virtual content is a challenge. This unwanted occlusion may disrupt user interactions with physical devices and compromise safety and usability. This paper investigates two resolution strategies to address this issue: Redirected Walking, which subtly adjusts the user's movement to maintain physical-virtual alignment, and Automatic Teleport Rotation, which realigns the virtual environment during travel. A user study set in a virtual forest demonstrates that both methods effectively reduce occlusion. While in our testbed, Automatic Teleport Rotation achieves higher occlusion resolution, it is suspected to increase cybersickness compared to the less intrusive Redirected Walking approach.PeerReviewe

Drying and storage influence the formation of key aromatic constituents in Blue Fenugreek (Trigonella caerulea)
The dried herb of blue fenugreek is used as a spice in the alpine region for the preparation of traditional bread and cheese. After drying, the herb is stored for a period of six to twelve months. During this time, the herb is expected to undergo changes in the compositions of the major flavor- and odor-determining compounds. To identify eventual biochemical processes, we applied different growing (conventional and sterile) and drying (air- and freeze drying) conditions and subsequently conducted periodical analysis of key aroma constituents (α-keto acids and volatile compounds) by LC-MS and GC-MS. The amount of glyoxylic acid was drastically increased in the air-dried sample, while the freeze-dried sample showed significantly higher amounts of α-keto-glutaric acid and pyruvic acid, respectively. During storage, a decrease in sulfuric compounds and an increase in alkane aldehydes were observed when comparing conventional and sterile samples. However, this increase was even greater for monoterpenes (especially camphor and p-cymene), showing thrice as high amounts after storage. Interestingly, both compounds were only formed significantly during the storage under conventional conditions, indicating that their production is induced/caused by microbial organisms.PeerReviewe
