An Empirical Analysis of the Central Bank of China's Monetary Policy and the Impact of its Communications on Market Interest Rates, Liquidity and Credit

    Get PDF
As one of the largest world's economies, China’s economy plays an important role at regional and global levels. In this context, with the fast opening steps of the Chinese economy to international markets, the Chinese Central Bank (PBC or PBOC) has adjusted its mechanisms to the needs of local and international economies. Chinese monetary policy is designed to keep prices and economic growth stable and to ensure the country’s economic development. The Chinese Central Bank has a significant influence over Chinese interest rates, interbank rates, and changes in liquidity and credit. The main goal of this research paper is to describe the role of the Chinese Central Bank in delivering Chinese monetary policy and its changes over the past few years. Our research paper is dedicated to verifying how the Chinese Central Bank's press releases are useful indicators for the future trend of market interest rates after constructing a numerical index representative of expansive or restrictive net signals contained in any of the PBC Communications examined. An empirical analysis over Chinese Monetary Policy Communications (Reports) is included in this research paper, presenting how the Central Bank of China is implementing its monetary policy in order to influence the development of its economic growth through its market interest rates, liquidity and credit movement

Effects of Economic Freedom on Subjective Well-Being

    Get PDF
Are people more likely to be satisfied with their lives if they had freedom from regulations, if they had the ability to trade freely internationally? In light of the demographic aging phenomenon we are facing, the present study analyzes the relationship between economic freedom and life satisfaction among European older adults. In order to do so, we are using data from the European Health, Ageing, and Retirement Survey and Economic Freedom of the World. By using the ordered logit regression method, we estimated different models to identify how sub-indicators of economic freedom affect the subjective well-being. According to the findings, the quality of the institutions that define the legal system and establish rules for the protection of private property and sound monetary policy have a positive effect on subjective well-being. On the other hand, openness to international trade has a negative effect and government and regulation doesn’t show any significance.

Mobile Money and Banking Development in Sub-Saharan Africa

The study investigated the relationship between mobile money growth and banking development in Sub-Saharan Africa. The question of whether mobile money threatens or supports traditional banks is contentious. Therefore, the motivation was to comprehensively examine the extent of mobile money's influence on banking development. The study used a quantitative research design with aggregated quarterly panel data from the four regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. The Panel ARDL estimation was applied to quantify the nature of the relationship between mobile money and banking development variables. Study findings showed that an increase in active mobile money accounts and volumes was associated with a decline in bank accounts, bank branches, and ATMs in the long run. At the same time, this trend was offset by positive impacts on private sector credit and total bank assets again in the long run. The findings align and extend the technology acceptance models and show that increased use of mobile money technology has substitution and complementary effects on banking development. Policymakers and financial institutions should carefully consider the potential trade-offs and synergies between mobile money adoption and traditional banking services, leveraging the positives while addressing challenges arising from the disruptive forces of technological innovation

How Harmful Brand Hate Can Be: The Moderating Role of Neuroticism and Extraversion

    Get PDF
This research analyses some of the antecedents and consequences of brand hate and examines the moderating effects of neuroticism and extraversion personality traits on behavioral outcomes. After collecting 375 responses, the data analysis was based on the structural equation modeling. Results show that symbolic incongruity, ideological incompatibility, and perceived value are predictors of brand hate, and that brand hate influences negative word-of-mouth, anti-brand actions and complaining. The relationship between brand hate and behavioral results are reinforced for consumers with high neuroticism traits and, in contrast, are attenuated in consumers with high extraversion traits. This investigation innovates by combining signaling theory and expectancy violation theories to explain the emergence of brand hate and its impacts on brand-related outcomes. It particularly explores the possibility of a curvilinear relationship, where brand hate tends to grow exponentially with the intensity of the signals

DEA-Based Malmquist Productivity Indexes for Assessing Greek Tourism Regions

    Get PDF
For this research project, a DEA-based Malmquist index model was built to evaluate the effectiveness and productivity of Greece's thirteen distinct tourist zones. The purpose of this article is to present a statistical analysis comparing the economic performance of different tourist locations in Greece. It does this by using a technique known as data envelopment analysis (DEA), which measures the Malmquist efficiency of the tourist sector in each of Greece's thirteen regions for the years 2017-2021. According to the findings of our study, the level of competitiveness enjoyed by a number of Greece's areas has not increased throughout the period under review. Our study approach and results give a reference for places in Greece that urgently need quick tourist growth to affect economic recovery. This need arises against the background of global climate change, the energy crisis, and the age that follows COVID-19

Effects of International Financial Integration on Economic Growth in Developing Countries: Heterogeneous Panel Evidence from Seven West African Countries

    Get PDF
From the existing literature, there is no consensus on the effects of financial integration on economic growth. The studies have mostly focused on country samples without taking into account country heterogeneity, or have been limited to a causality study. This paper examines the effects of international financial integration on economic growth in seven West African Economic and Monetary Union’s countries (WAEMU)[i], over the period 1980 - 2019. Methodologically, the study applies heterogeneous panel techniques taking into account inter-individual dependence (MG, CCEMG and AMG). The results show that the stock of external debt and the opening of the capital account negatively affect long-term economic growth in the WAEMU region. The country analysis confirms the panel results for Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. Sectoral misallocation of external capital could be a plausible explanation. The economies of WAEMU countries are mostly dominated by the service sector, which contributes more to their GDP than the productive sectors, i.e. agriculture and industry. While the agricultural sector, which employs a large part of the active population, is still traditional and does not benefit from capital inflows, the industrial sector is still embryonic.   [i] Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. In this study, we have removed Guinea-Bissau due to lack of data over a large part of the period

Interconnections between Minister Cabinets in Greece. A Bicentennial Study with Implications on Economy

    Get PDF
In this paper we deal with a network analysis of interconnected cabinets in Greece for an extended time period. In parallel, we present a small review of the economic crises that have occurred in Greece over this period. More particularly, we used historical sources to locate all different Greek governments and all economic crises starting from the 1821 Greek revolution to the present days. We also formed a two-mode (also known as affiliation) network of ministers and cabinets and subsequently created a network of interconnected cabinets. We used dedicated software to visualize this network and used Social Network Analytical procedures in order to calculate its properties. Finally, in an attempt to investigate possible relations between network metrics and economic crises, we note and discuss an interesting observation between a specific metrics and such major economic events. In our paper, we firstly introduce the context and present our research questions. We then present the relevant literature, mainly discussing the extent to which Social Network Analysis has been used to investigate patterns of behaviors in politics. We then proceed to presenting and applying our methodology on network creation, visualization and metrics computations. The following section discusses the longitudinal evolution of our network and the relation between its clustering coefficient and the emergence of economic crises. We then finalize our paper with some conclusions

Government Support During COVID-19 and Corruption

    Get PDF
We analyze the allocation and effectiveness of government support in response to the COVID-19 outbreak across a nationally representative sample of firms in 32 countries representing different levels of institutional transparency. The probability of receiving government support is higher for larger firms, firms belonging to business support groups and innovative firms in low corruption countries. In high corruption, countries firms competing against unregistered establishments, with lack of internationally recognized quality certification and no formalized business strategy are more likely to receive government support. Using the panel structure of the data to address reverse causality, selection bias and unobserved heterogeneity, we then find that government support improves firm-level outcomes more strongly in low corruption countries. Among different types of government support, we find wage subsidies to be more effective in high corruption countries while technical assistance for adoption of digital technologies in low corruption countries. In addition, social distancing and lockdown policies do not seem to be as effective in improving firm-level outcomes in high-corruption countries most likely because of weaker capacities to enforce such policies. These results show the importance of enhancing systems of accountability and enforcement procedures that will ensure that fiscal stimulus aid is deployed to benefit those who need it the most

Assessment of the Efficiency of Public Hospitals in Romania

    Get PDF
Considering the high pressure on the healthcare limited resources, mainly on hospitals, determined by the population ageing, and the increased incidence of chronic and infectious diseases, it is essential to both decrease expenditures and provide good quality healthcare. In this paper we focus on the efficiency of Romanian public hospitals. Our research goals are to identify and examine the inefficient public hospitals in Romania; to determine sources of inefficiency in Romanian public hospitals; to describe a potential reduction in all inputs on average to rationalize hospital resources; and recommend that hospital management be improved. We propose an approach that contains preliminary data analyses to obtain homogeneous distributions, then we use Data Envelopment Analysis to estimate the technical efficiency scores for the hospitals in the sample. The results showed that more than half of the examined small hospitals were technically inefficient and that they could have produced a larger number of discharges and consequently an increased number of inpatient days. Possible reductions in inputs were also indicated. These results suggest ways of improving hospital management and restructuring and reorganizing decisions that can be implemented in the hospital network
