INFLUENCE OF ORGANIC MANURES AND GIBBERELLIC ACID ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF STRAWBERRY (Fragaria X ananassa DUCH.)
A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of organic manures and growth regulators on the growth and yield of two varieties of strawberry namely ‘Sweet Charlie’ and ‘Winter Dawn’. Six treatments were taken combining three organic manures viz. Vermicompost @ 3.0 t/ha, Mustard oil cake @ 1.0 t/ha and Neem cake @ 1.0 t/ha and two concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3) viz. 75 ppm and 100 ppm along with a control. Foliar application of GA3 was carried out at 40 and 60 days after planting whereas organic manures were applied as basal dose. Results of the study suggested that higher doses i.e. 100 ppm of GA3 along with vermicompost exhibited more vegetative growth whereas 75 ppm GA3 resulted in higher fruit set and yield in both the varieties. It was found that vermicompost @ 3.0 t/ha combined with 100 ppm GA3 recorded the highest plant height (24.7 cm and 21.4 cm) and numbers of leaves per plant (46.0 and 68.7) in both Sweet Charlie and Winter Dawn varieties, respectively. Whereas, highest fruit diameter (3.3cm and 3.4cm), fruit length (4.6cm and 4.8cm), fruit weight (18.2 g and 17.9 g), number of fruits per plant (24.6 and 32.0), yield per plant (447.8 g and 572.1 g) and yield per hectare (18.80 t and 24.03 t) were recorded under vermicompost @ 3.0 t/ha in combination with 75 ppm GA3 in both Sweet Charlie and Winter Dawn varieties, respectively. It was observed that Winter Dawn variety produced a 28.0% higher yield as compared to Sweet Charlie under the best treatment i.e. vermicompost @ 3.0 t/ha in combination with 75 ppm GA3
INFLUENCE OF ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGAL BIOSTIMULANTS AND CONVENTIONAL FERTILIZERS ON SOME SOLANACEOUS CROPS FOR GROWTH, PRODUCTIVITY AND NUTRIENT STOICHIOMETRY UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS IN SEMI- ARID REGION OF MAHARASHTRA, INDIA
The main objective of the study was to evaluate the outcome of inoculation with biological consortium culture of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species (Aculospora logula, Glomus fasciculatum, Glomus intraradices, Gigaspora margarita, and Scutellospora heterogama) and chemical fertilizers on Solanaceous crops (Solanum tuberosum L. cultivars, Lycopersicum esculentum L. and Solanum melongena L.) under field conditions during Rabi cropping season. The experimental plot was a randomized block design with four replications. The result revealed that gross yield, plant height, number of branches/plant, leaf moisture, leaf area, root length, and dry biomass were positively affected by the inoculation of consortium culture of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi with 75% recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF). Overall, our study shows that inoculation of consortium mycorrhizae with 75% RDF gave better growth, dry biomass, nutrient uptake, and yield of solanaceous crops and reduces the dose of chemical fertilizers to improve sustainable crop production and creates a healthy environment
INFLUENCES OF THE SOIL PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS ON THE MINERAL COMPOSITION OF THE MOROCCAN STRAWBERRY TREE (Arbutus unedo L)
Leaf mineral composition reflects the complex interaction between soil, climate, and plant genetic and epigenetic background in terms of organic and inorganic composition. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of seven soil compositions on the mineral contents of Strawberry leaves (Arbutus unedo) under Moroccan conditions. The obtained results demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the soil nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels and their levels in the Strawberry plant leaves. Also, a positive relation was reported between the soil organic matter and the level of manganese and phosphorus in leaves. Moreover, a significant negative correlation was demonstrated between the soil organic matter and the plant pH level. These correlations were confirmed by the principal component analysis (PCA) which demonstrated the presence of three principal components accounting for 54.42% of the total variations, reflecting the important proportions of the various patterns of mineral and organic traits among accessions. In PCA, the most discriminative traits were clustered in PC1 and PC2. These findings may highlight the specific mineral needs for the A. unedo plant for its optimal cultivation and subsequent domestication in Morocco
A HYPOTHETICAL DESIGN TO INHIBIT COVID 19 DISEASE DISASTER BY DIAGRAMMATIC MODEL
SARS-CoV-2 is a new entity in the globe studied vigorously in the present world. The estimated populations are around 47 million people who are affected by the virus and around 300,000 (16th May 2020) deaths resulted from the outbreak. The rate might keep on increasing due to the non-availability of a proper vaccine, following proper management with epidemiological studies, and displacement of contact individuals as a source of transmission in particular viral-prone regions. CoVID 19 is on its vigorous spread leading to a global impact on lots of sectors. The outreaching impacts play a role in international politics, scientific developments, and economic crises over the world, and global relations among the countries. This model attempts to determine the possible impacts and outcomes of the Pandemic over the international level and some possible ways to handle it effectively. An unpredictable catastrophe in the present scenario of the world is following a high range of public health hazards. Analytical plotted data assembles for imposing in multidisciplinary segments to cure and control morbidity, a mortality rate of disease clusters, and hotspots zone. The contagious outbreak was reprogrammed as a pandemic from Wuhan in China through the transmissible chain of human contacts. Currently, the infective chain is spreading day by day with high morbidity in the United States, Europe, Scandinavian countries, and India. The transmissible chain of the virus needs to break until any effective medicine or vaccine is launched
EFFECT OF Staphylococcus epidermidis ON Pseudomonas aeruginosa BIOFILM IN MIXED-SPECIES CULTURE
Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are clinically relevant pathogens that often produce biofilms. To investigate the co-survivability of S. epidermidis and P. aeruginosa in mixed cultures biofilm and planktonic form, it is important to understand more about the interspecies interaction of both species. The interspecies interaction was analyzed using streak and drop agar plate assay, cell viability assay (CFU), spectrophotometry-based method, and microscopic analysis. The findings suggest that both cells and supernatant of P. aeruginosa inhibit the planktonic growth of S. epidermidis. The cell viability result shows that PAO1 biofilm cells were decreased by 88%, and SE biofilm cells were increased by 75% concerning their control. Opposite to the P. aeruginosa, the S. epidermidis biofilm and EPS matrix were found to increase in mixed culture biofilm, which was further confirmed by microscopic analysis. In contrast, differential agar media result shows that the reduction in the biofilm (CFU/ml) of P. aeruginosa is independent of S. epidermidis cells concentration. Finally, the effect of the supernatant on biofilm was investigated, and it found that S. epidermidis biofilm was enhanced while P. aeruginosa biofilm was reduced in the presence of partner bacterial supernatant, which indicated that S. epidermidis in biofilm mode could hinder the biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa. The outcomes show that the culture supernatant of S. epidermidis can be used to prevent P. aeruginosa associated biofilm infections
GENOME-WIDE IDENTIFICATION OF THE GATA TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR FAMILY IN Dichanthelium oligosanthes
The GATA transcription factors (TFs) play a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes in plants. Identification and characterization of the GATA TF family has been carried out in several important grass species, including rice, maize, and bamboo. However, no information is available on the GATA TFs in the C3 grass species Dichanthelium oligosanthes. In the current study, 31 GATA genes have been identified in the D. oligosanthes genome by stringent bioinformatics analysis. The exon-intron arrangement analysis of the DoGATAs via the Gene Structure Display Server (GSDS 2.0) revealed the redundancy and differences in their gene structural organization. In addition, the sequence comparisons within the DoGATAs via BLAST revealed 11 numbers of putative paralogs. Similarly, the BLAST comparisons among the OsGATAs and DoGATAs resulted in the identification of 21 orthologs. Structural analysis of the identified DoGATAs through Simple Modular Architecture Research Tool (SMART), Conserved Domain Database (CDD), and Multiple Expectation Maximization for Motif Elicitation (MEME) revealed that all of them possess the signature GATA domain and the C-X2-C-X18-C-X2-C consensus sequence. The phylogenetic analysis via MEGA divided the DoGATAs into four groups along with rice and Arabidopsis GATAs. In addition, the subcellular localization, gene ontology, and other peptide functional prediction results further supported the DoGATAs to be putative GATA genes. Moreover, the findings of this study can serve as a basic framework for the isolation and functional characterization of GATA genes in D. oligosanthes
NEXT GENERATION SEQUENCING TECHNOLOGIES TOWARDS EXPLORATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS
With the ever-increasing population, the plant cover is decreasing at an alarming rate. The medicinal plants are most affected by this because they are present in the last tier of cultivation. Let it be pharmaceutical companies or people using it for herbalism, medicinal plants have been exploited without getting a chance to flourish in their natural environment. Modern biotechnology acts as a bridge between the cultivation and utilization of medicinal plants. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology which is a decade old but emerging field helps to unveil the importance of medicinal plants. Thus, it paves the way for sustenance of medicinal plants by molecular breeding, micropropagation, large-scale tissue culture, and other methods to conserve the plants with great medicinal value. Various NGS technologies can be found in the market like Ilumina, PacBio, Ion Torrent, and others. The present review will summarize the NGS technologies and their potential use to study the genomes, transcriptome, epigenome, and interactome of medicinal plants towards the identification of bioactive compounds
THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS OF Spirulina AGAINST HUMAN PATHOGENIC VIRUSES
Viruses can spread worldwide and the early detection of emerging infectious diseases and outbreaks in humans and animals is important for effective surveillance and prevention. Viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), swine flu, and influenza virus are some of the viruses that spread diseases worldwide. However, the non-availability of effective antiviral drugs and the drug-resistance among the virus and host have become the major problems in controlling viral infections. The natural products from microalgae can be an alternative therapeutic agent to control viral infections in humans. Spirulina is a well-known cyanobacterium that has been consumed by humans as a food supplement for more than centuries without side-effects. Spirulina possesses high nutritional values and provides numerous health benefits to the consumers. Spirulina can be an alternative natural therapeutic agent for numerous virus infections as it contains several bioactive compounds with proven antiviral effect on enveloped viruses (Herpes simplex virus, measles virus, mumps virus) and non-enveloped viruses (astrovirus, rotavirus) by preventing the spread of the virus in the host cells. Spirulina also serves as a natural supplement that strengthens the immune system. This review focuses on the antiviral properties and immunostimulant effects of Spirulina as a potential therapeutic supplement on human health
INFLUENCE OF GENDER ON PAIN, QUALITY OF LIFE, AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN PATIENTS WITH KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of knee pain which contributes to adults’ disability. Females have an increased risk of knee osteoarthritis. However, little is known about the gender influence in pain perception, quality of life (QOL), and physical activity. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the influence of gender on pain perception, QOL, and physical activity in patients with knee osteoarthritis. A cross-sectional study design with a total of 186 patients(mean age of 56.64 ± 6.49) with knee osteoarthritis were recruited. Pain intensity, level of physical activity, and QOL of patients were assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS), global physical activity questionnaire (GPAQ), and Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Among the studied patients, 52% of patients with knee osteoarthritis had a relatively low level of physical activity with females representing the majority of them. Lower mean was observed in QOL and physical activity whereas pain intensity was higher in females compared to males (p < 0.05). Pearson correlation demonstrated a strong negative correlation between physical activity and pain (r = -0.77, n = 186, p <0.01), and a weak correlation exist between physical activity and all domains of QOL except for the functional capacity and body pain. Majority of female participants with knee osteoarthritis exhibit poor QOL, physical activity, and increased pain intensity as compared to males. Clinicians need to be aware of the influence of gender in treating patients with knee osteoarthritis
PRE-TREATMENT TEMPERATURE AND MULTI-RESPONSE SURFACE OPTIMISATION OF ULTRASOUND-ASSISTED EXTRACTION OF ANTIOXIDANTS FROM RED DATES
Ziziphus jujube known as red dates are natural flora, are a rich source of antioxidant bioactive compounds and are widely used in making Chinese traditional medicine. However, the optimization of extraction conditions and demonstration of extraction kinetics of red dates remains a gap. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to enhance the antioxidant activity via DPPH, crude extract yield, and TPC by response surface methodology (RSM). Also, mathematical modeling of the TPC extraction kinetics was performed. Single-factor experiments were adopted to identify the preliminary RSM ranges of four extraction parameters such as liquid-solid ratio (10, 20, and 30 ml/g), extraction temperature (50, 60 and 70°C), time (40, 50 and 60min), and ultrasonic power (70, 80 and 90%). The extraction kinetics based on RSM optimized conditions were modeled into six extraction kinetic models. As result, the highest crude extract yield (4.56 g), highest TPC (0.023 g GAE/g extract), and highest antioxidant activity (85.88%) were obtained at 60ºC. The optimum values were liquid-solid ratio 30ml/g, extraction temperature 60°C, time 60 min, and ultrasonic power 70%. The antioxidant activity of red dates after optimization (90.59%) was higher than that of synthetic antioxidants, Butylated Hydroxytoluene (84.71%), and Butylated Hydroxyanisole (77.73%). Furthermore, the best-fitted kinetic model was the second-order kinetic model due to its coefficient of determination (R2) at 0.9849, being the closest to 1 and its root mean square error (RMSE) was the lowest, 0.001028 among other models
