While the term ‘metamorphosis’ itself refers to a distinct change in the physiology of an animal, it has also gained popularity as an element of literature. Be it the Metamorphosis of Kafka or of Ovid, it appears to have become almost a technique, so to speak, a conscious choice made by writers in their work. During its short history of about 140 years, the Punjabi novel has evolved in many ways. Countless Punjabi novels as well as novelists have emerged, owing to the popularity gained by this genre. At first, it was composed in its simplest form, but as readership grew, it evolved in diction, formation, structure, thought, language as well as dialogue. Delhi, Faizabad, and later Lucknow have been known centers of Urdu poetry in the 18th century. Despite their importance regarding the linguistic and literary development of Urdu prose and poetry, it is also well acknowledged that such prowess was not confined to these areas only. Other areas such as Azimabad, Calcutta and Rampur etc. also contributed to the enrichment of this literary tradition. Likewise, in the 2nd half of the 18th century Hāfiẓ Ghulām Murtaẓā Khavaishgī was composing poetry in Kasur, Pakistan. A maṣnavī titled Gulrēz is his memorable work; a translation of a Persian maṣnavī which was written by Ẓiā al-Dīn Nakhshabī. In unpublished Gulrēz, there are many prominent aspects which are yet to be explored. For instance, there are 28 Urdu ghazals, some of which are part of the text, while some are written on its margin. These are rare examples of ghazals in Punjab in the 18th century. Manṣūr al-Ḥallāj (857-922) was a great martyr-mystic of the history of Sufism who, irrespective of various controversial remarks about his personality and concepts, still has a profound influence on the mystical thought of the internationally-known intellectuals and religious thinkers. Much has been written on the different aspects of this mystic in almost all the languages of the world. No doubt, Louis Massignon (d. 1962), a reputed French orientalist, "discovered" al-Ḥallāj and devoted about half a century to bring to light the different aspects of al-Ḥallāj's life and writings. Aḥmad `Alī Shivrājpūrī wrote Qiṣṣah’-e-Manṣūr in Urdu which was published in 1851. Luckily, this very unique poetic tract is available in the Sprenger Collection of the Berlin State Library

Contrary to popular opinion, translation is not merely the act of picking up a text and converting it into another language, there is much more to this. The 50s and 60s, owing to the advancements in linguistic studies, ushered in a scientific inquiry into the process of translation, thereby making evident its complex nature. This linguistic approach, however, appeared to have certain drawbacks. This article highlights three fundamental issues with the linguistic study of translation and seeks to introduce the German Functionalist approach, which successfully addressed these issues by coming up with some revolutionary ideas for students, practitioners, readers, researchers, thinkers, and critics of translation. The article aims to allow readers to think about translation with a wider and more realistic lens, and hence promote scholarship and research within translation in Pakistan

In Plato Socratic dialogues, he theorizes that since the material world is changing and therefore unreliable in nature, it is merely a product, an imitation of whatever exists in the World of Ideas/Forms. In this Ideal World, all ideas are organic and real; this world is just a replica of that. Hindi metaphysics also claims that this world is only an illusion. Mystic, philosopher and poet, Mohyiddin Ibn`Arabi proposed a very similar idea, suggesting that the Unity of Being is a single reality in its truest form, and all that the world contains is merely an image. In this article, the author explores how the concept of World of Ideas is contained and exhibited within the ghazal form. It appears that the concept allows for a freer flow of ideas within poetry, that the artist can explore both worlds

In this article 55 unpublished letters of Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah, addressed to his close relatives, are being produced. These letters shed new light on the life and scholarly activities of Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah. While in Paris, he remained in touch with his relatives in the Hyderabad-Deccan and Madras. These letters reflect that Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah acted as a religious and spiritual guide as well as a mentor and a ‘muftī’ for his relatives. He showed keen interest in their educational and religious activities and proved to be a source of encouragement and guidance for them. These letters are also a significant source on the scholarly contribution of his ancestors, especially their role in the dissemination of the teaching of Islam in South India. We also gain a sense of Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah's position on questions of juristic nature, where his orthodox views become evident

Critic, researcher, thinker, historian and poet, Dr. Tabassum Kashmiri’s ideas and poetry have had significant impact on Urdu literature and the way in which ideas are expressed. This article studies his poetry vis-à-vis the lens of Stylistics, i.e. a branch of applied linguistics whereby texts are studied with the assumption that style itself is a linguistic choice made by the author. In this study, elements such as phonetics, syntax and semantics are observed. The theory is used to establish Kashmiri’s work as novel in terms of the stylistics employed by the author
