No full textMossel Bay, Anglican Church. The Anglican Church in Mossel Bay has an outside tower that is both impressive and classical in style. In the tower hangs a rather large bell that however is difficult to approach due to the fact that it hangs high in the middle of the tower. On the bell itself we find in between two pairs of moulding wires at the top the information on the foundry, Cast by John Warner & Sons London 1924? The position of the bell made it difficult to record the year of founding precisely. The given date is therefore uncertain. There are three more moulding wires above the sound bow and another two at the lip of the bell

No full textRawsonville, Goudini Dutch Reformed Church. The Goudini Dutch Reformed Church at Rawsonville dates from 1879 and a memorial plaque, put up in 1979, refers to this fact. The church houses two bells, one in the white and easily accessible tower, the other in a bell tower outside the church. 1. The only decorations on the bell in the tower are cast on the top of the bell, above the shoulder. There it reads, Horlosie Fabrikante Johannesburg. This company precedes the South African Organ Builders, that has been responsible for a vast number of Petit & Fritsen bells in the country. The older company is mainly known for its production of tower clocks. As with other business of this kind the production of bells was secondary and mostly outsourced to other companies. Unfortunately, the latter are almost never mentioned.
We found another bell of a similar type in the DRC of Bellville-West. 2. The bell in the garden of the church hangs high up in a horseshoe type construction. The bell has a fair number of moulding wires: Two pairs can be found right below the shoulder, three above the sound bow and a further two on the lip of the bell. On the side of the bell stands, Woodhead Plant & Co. The company Woodhead Plant & Co. used to be involved in agricultural equipment. However, more information is missing. Also, this bell is the first so far with a reference to the company

No full textMcGregor, Dutch Reformed Church. The Dutch Reformed Church in McGregor has its founding stone on 2 November 1909. The church has a rather small bell that hangs high up in the bell room inside the tower. It could not be reached for measurements. The bell has a hammer outside and a clapper inside. This makes it possible to ring the bell manually and also electronically. The only inscription on the bell figures in the middle and reads, E. Burmester. Cape-Town. Above the sound bow are five moulding rings of which the middle is slightly thicker than the surrounding ones. As can be expected the bell is linked to a clock that has been made by Burmester in 1905. Normally Burmester acts as deliverer of clocks, not as a bell founder. One possibility is that Burmester acted as deliverer of bells and clocks. Since he needed a bell for the clock, he ordered it from a founder of his choice but with the stipulation that the founder’s name should not be mentioned on the bell
