Shams Rumi— Commonalities and Distinctions
Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, one of the foremost Sufis, he was great poet of Persian, too. But Rumi had not composed even a single verse till reaching about half of his lifespan and was only known as a great religious scholar. But suddenly Rumi became one of the most impressive Sufi poets in the history. He became one of the most renowned Sufis as well, immersed in 'ishq-e-ilahi', or the great love of God. This metamorphosis is attributed to Shams Tabrizi, the great Sufi who moved from Damascus to Rumi's hometown Qonia. This article analyses the circumstances, reasons and events that culminated into such a great change in one of the most respected theologian of his times, turning him into a Sufi. Discussing the philosophy of these two great Sufis and quoting from their Persian writings the article draws some parallels between these two Sufis.
ایک کم یاب قصے ’’فریب النسا‘‘ کا متن
Faraib-un-nisa is a versified work of fiction written by Khuda Bakhsh Ghareeb. Published in 1870, its various versions are found, as mentioned by Francis Pritchett .Narrating the love story of its three characters, Barman Shah, Rani Bakhtar and Chhabilya Bhatyari, the work has some rare Urdu vocabulary and 'some rites and rituals of Hindus', as put by the poet himself. This article introduces and reproduces the authentic text of this rare work and gives a brief glossary of words rarely used. The text is composed in Urdu orthography in vogue these days.

The term register was first used in 1956 by Thomas Bertram Reid, a linguist. By it he meant the style of language used according to context, social status, occasion and the speaker. This article traces the use of the terms 'register' and 'label' in English and Urdu dictionaries. With a special reference to the dictionaries of Urdu compiled in the 19th century, the article enlists some 'registers' and 'labels' used according to the specific contexts, the speakers and the audience hailing from different social backgrounds. It takes into account Urdu's authentic dictionaries such as Farhang-e-Aasifiya, Ameer-ul-lughaat and Makhzan-ul-muhaavraat etc.

There has been a myriad of theories on the origin, beginning and development of the Urdu language. Among the scholars who propounded theories on the issue, more prominent are Hafiz Mahmood Khan Sherani (1880-1946), Syed Mohiuddin Qadri Zor (1905-1962) and Masood Hussain Khan (1919-2010). This paper presents the views of these three scholars on the issue and stresses the fact that, according to Masood Hussain Khan, Urdu was not born in Punjab but it developed from the dialects spoken in and around Delhi during the new era of the Indo-Aryan languages spanning from 11th to 12th centuries AD

Urdu lexicography of the yesteryears had some specific traits which may seem odd when seen against the backdrop of modern lexicographic principles. One of them is the tendency among the compilers of Urdu dictionaries in the last two centuries to look down upon the vocabulary and usage of the common speakers of Urdu and they invariably mentioned such usages, pronunciations and coinages as 'substandard', 'taboo', 'vulgar' and 'uncouth'. The article quotes from a number of standard Urdu dictionaries citing the examples of such prescriptive trends of Urdu lexicography in the 19th and 20th centuries. This dismissive attitude towards the parlance of the common people also extended to the vocabulary used specifically by women as well.

Talmee' or macaronic verses is the art of mixing the words or phrases from one language into the poetic text of another. It is a part of rhetoric art that is considered a very difficult one to practice since it involves the use of more than one language in poetry, with all of its prosodic and linguistic intricacies observed strictly. The article traces the history of this art as practiced in Arabic and Persian. It also presents the samples of versified pieces that represent this art in Urdu poetry by some famous poets, such as Ameer Khusrau, Insha Allah Khan Insha, Nazeer Akberabadi, Allama Iqbal, Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi and some others

Shamsur Rahman Farooqi's novel Kai chand the sar-e-aasmaan created a great interest and also stirred some debates in the literary circles because of its depiction of subcontinent's culture in historical as well as its character Vazeer Khanum.nbsp; This article evaluates Vazeer Khanum's character viz-a-viz feministic point of view and Jacques Derrida's (1930-2004) theory of archive and post-colonialism. Derrida's Archive Fever has influenced the archival discourses much and the article analyses the alternative discourse that Shamsur Rahman Farooqi has given in his novel. It also discusses the feministic portrayal of Vazeer Khanum.nbsp

The art of chronogram is very delicate and demands mastery over prosody as well as the command over the art of reckoning specific numbers from the numerical values of letters assigned to Arabic alphabet. A large number of poets have composed chronograms to record the historical events as well as the events taking place in course of everyday life. Some of such chronograms are indeed marvellous and this article, recording such chronograms and introducing their creators, is a part of the book hitherto unpublished.
تارڑ کے ناول ’’بہاؤ‘‘ میں شاعرانہ وسائل کا استعمال
Mustansar Hussain Tarar's novel Bahaao offers, aside from other aspects, some beautiful examples of the means of rhetorical arts. In this novel, Tarar has used various parts of rhetoric such as metaphors, allusions, similes, etc. The article pinpoints the passages and sentences whereby such rhetorical elements are found and mentions the specific elements. A parallel with other famous Urdu novels is also drawn.

Urdu Dictionary Board has successfully completed the editing and publishing of its 22-volume Urdu dictionary on historical principles, recording the largest number of entries ever enlisted in any Urdu dictionary. But it lacks certain citations/explanatory quotations for some specific words/phrases/idioms. Since the revision of the 22 volumes is about to begin, the article offers some important explanatory quotations, with a view to help the board, with reference to a work of literature whereby such usages are authenticated
