Progressive Criticism Gives Urdu Criticism a New Perspective and New Direction Some progressive critics have been vocal in their approach to this approach. This one-sidedness of criticism was the wrong result of the interpretation of progressive criticism, but soon a circle of progressive critics emerged who, with a correct understanding of Marxist thought, led progressive critics out of reactionary thinking, including Dr. Muhammad Ali. Siddiqui, Dr. Mohammad Hassan, Dr. Qamar Raees and Mohammad Aqeel Rizvi are the representative critics who have given a progressive interpretation to progressive criticism in the context of new literary movements, modernity, post-modernity and literary theory with new contexts and theoretical and practical discussion

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan (1858-1898) was a prominent figure of 19the century who played a colossal role during the intellectual crisis of the South Asian Muslims in India. His pragmatic vision as a philosopher and reformer in ameliorating the Muslims while promoting modern technical, scientific and progressive education with an unprejudiced temperament was a revolutionary phase to meet challenges posed by the British colonists after the First War of Independence in 1957. Sir Syed believed that educational backwardness and resistance to modern knowledge are the prime reasons for the abysmal conditions of Indian Muslims. While employing Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework of cultural, social and economic capital, the current research aims at exploring the historical legacy and influence of Sir Syed’s thought in reforming the ontological structure of Muslim educational propensities during the socio-political decline in the subcontinent. It further explores the relevance of educational philosophy proposed by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan while exploring the contemporary challenges of the contemporary educational structure in Pakistan. The paper concludes that it Pakistan still faces the quandary of an imbalanced educational milieu and thus it is imperative to engender a cogent educational culture aiming to encourage scientific knowledge vis-a-vis arts, humanities, and social sciences to create a progressive and humanistic society.

Jaun Elia is a prominent name of modern Urdu literature. . The uniqueness of his accent distinguishes him from his contemporary poets. His style takes you to an enchanting world of pleasure and joy. Jaun Elia shows a notable diversity of thoughts in his poetry. As a matter of fact, his poetry encompasses a variety of shades. Romance is the salient feature of his poetry. But he looks entirely different when pessimism clouds his poetry. One can feel an echo of self-pity in many of his verses when Jaun narrates his woes of life. But being a sensitive and sensible artist, he doesn’t forget his liability towards society and his surroundings. This is why some of his literary work depicts social ethos of the age.             Skepticism is also one of the basic thoughts of his ‘Ghazals’ and ‘Nazms’.In his poetry, sometimes his skepticism becomes so aggressive and expressive that it can easily be confused with atheism. This article is an effort to trace different angels of skepticism in his poetry.

Novel has created as many forms as the novels have been written so for. Starting from realism it has went through a lot of transformations and adopted or invented generic techniques to narrate almost everything human. In Urdu, novel usually concerned more about the social life and social change it depicted. By maintaining a liquidating equilibrium between form and content, Urdu novel has forged subjects of modernization vis-a-vis orthodoxy at the same time. This article analyses an Urdu novel of Sughra Humayun Mirza. The female novelist used her text to expand the social space of women. She incorporated contemporary disciplines and knowledge forms to educate the little and a few literate females readers. Her logical and up-to-date style of thinking make her text impressive. She presented arguments for the female education and answers the fears of male objectors of female education. This article shows how the novelistic form was used to educate, liberate and opening new horizons of disciplines for Muslim females without very much threatening the prevailing cultural norms.
