Trilingualism: An Asset or a Liability?
Get PDFThis paper looks at Trilingualism from different perspectives. After giving the background of the traditional belief in the superiority of monolingualism, this paper examines the validity of these notions in the light of research carried out in different parts of the world. The argument, supporting tri-multilingualism, is followed by the conclusion that as opposed to popular belief prevalent in the West in 1960s and in Pakistan now, trilingualism should be seen as a blessing rather than a curse. Instead of depriving our children of their rich linguistic heritage the parents and teachers should make the right language choices for them

No full textIn this research article the tradition of critical and research studies about Ghalib has been traced in Aligarh Muslim University. Hali was the very first critic who wrote a valuable book about Ghalib "Yad Gar-e-Ghalib. It was a starting point of the studies about Ghalib in Urdu. Although he was not from Ali Gadh but his association with Ali Gadh Literary movement is unquestionable. After Hali we found a great tradition of Ghalibyat. Critics and researchers like Khurshid-ul-Islam, Dr. Nazir Ahmad, Rasheed Ahmad Siddiquee, Aal-e-Ahmad Saroor and others contributed much in this tradition

The Netspeak of Young Pakistani Netizens
Get PDFThe paper studies the main linguistic features of the Netspeak used by young Pakistani net users in online social network called ‘Orkut’. So far, no research has been carried out to study the general linguistic features of Pakistani variety of asynchronic Netspeak. This paper is an attempt to bridge this gap. These linguistic features have been classified into different categories. The analysis of this language and its comparison with the one used by native speakers of English on this network demonstrates that an intriguingly new linguistic variety of Pakistani Netspeak is evolving which is characterized by sets of specific adaptations, in graphology, grammar, semantics, and discourse, to the properties of the technology and the needs of the users

No full textMuzzaffar Ali Syed can justifiably, be regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of Urdu Doha and song writing in Pakistan. This research paper is about the editorial work on his Urdu dohas, bhajans and the songs. It is an attempt to probe the reasons for which the research in, and the critical appreciation of these songs and dohas was neglected and as a result the entire creative work of Muzzaffar Ali Syed, in this field, was allowed to sink in to oblivion. This article also throws light on Muzzaffar Ali Syed's contribution in the critical debate on the question of identity that conditioned the intellectual atmosphere in the first decade of the second half of 20th century. In this paper the writer has attempted to collect Muzzaffar Ali Syed's dohas, geet and bhajans that were published in different literary journals over a period of time. Beside these, other creative writings of this neglected poet have also been brought to light .A task, very strenuous indeed but extremely rewarding in the sense that it highlights some important features of the early phase of this genre of Urdu poetry that later evolved a great tradition

No full textIt has been a long standing tradition that standard journals devote the whole issue to critically evaluate the literary contribution of a scholar. This tradition is quite strong in Urdu literary journals. Prestigious Urdu journals like Naqoosh, Nigar, Auraq and Saqi have contributed well to this tradition. This paper attempts to demonstrate that Afkar has contributed more than any other journal to this tradition. Twenty three of its issues have been devoted to famous literary figures like Iqbal, Faiz,Manto, Krishan Chandar and Ali Sardar Jaffary. The paper presents a critical appraisal of these issues
The Ethics of Global Civil Society in Islamic Tradition
Get PDFThe present move towards a global world demands sincere efforts for a better mutual understanding on ethical basis so that the visions, loyalties, ideals and values of individuals irrespective of their religious affiliations can be developed. This study aims to present the importance of Islamic ethics for the global society. It briefly examines the Islamic ethics and suggests that Quran, Sunnah, the literature of Adab and legal rulings are the main sources of ethics in the Islamic tradition. This is followed by a discussion on the Islamic injunctions on important ethics of multi-faith society such as righteousness and goodness. This is followed by the discussion on religious pluralism as the basic ethic of global society. The opinions of the Muslim jurists about the liberty of faith are also explored. The final part of the paper analyses in detail the legal rulings of Islam regarding interfaith marriages and social relations among the followers of different religious traditions

No full textIn this research article, Press Govt. relations during dictatorial and democratic regimes of Field Martial General Ayub Khan (1958-69), General Yahya Khan (1969-1971) and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (1971-1977) have been analyzed in critical and objective manner. This article has briefly described various tactics i.e. legal, economic and social, used by these regimes for curtailing and curbing freedom of Press in Pakistan. Perceptions, versions and point of view of the rulers have also been mentioned by the researchers. The article concludes that both autocratic and democratic regimes have tried to fix up media practitioners and Press. The Press Govt. relations, on the whole had been deteriorated with each passing day during this specific era. The findings of the research indicate that democratic Govt. of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had adopted same stern measures for curtailing the freedom of Press as used by his predecessor dictatorial regimes
Evolving Views on Poverty and Welfare: An Analysis of Conventional and Islamic Approaches
Get PDFPoverty is multidimensional in nature. As a result, there are different conceptualizations of Poverty. In this paper, the focus is exclusively on the conventional and Islamic approaches to poverty and welfare. All conventional approaches concentrate on the well-being of individuals, necessities of minimum needs, nutritional deprivation, basic needs, capabilities and vulnerability respectively. However, the most balanced and unique conceptualization of poverty is based on the Islamic approach. A systematic study of the Qur’an, the traditions of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), the conduct of righteous caliphs and the writings of early Muslim jurists would make it clear that the poor, indigent, and destitute are given adequate importance. The Islamic state is responsible to assist and rehabilitate the poor and the needy. One of the means of assistance and rehabilitation is Zakat. Other means are Ushr, Sadaqat, Gifts and other assistance transfers to the poor and collectively all are called Infaq. Based on the conceptual and theoretical evidence, the paper concludes that Islamic approach supports a poverty-alleviation strategy based on the principle of equality of opportunities for everybody
