This study investigates how courtyard coverings in open-courtyard madrasas from the 16th–17th century Ottoman period can be optimized in terms of conservation, aesthetics, microclimate, thermal comfort, and energy performance within the context of contemporary interventions in historic environments. The research is based on the premise that additions and new constructions in historic buildings should not be limited to structural or visual compatibility alone but must also address critical sustainability-related issues such as indoor environmental conditions, energy consumption, and material durability. This necessity requires integrating the 'distinct yet complementary' approach of the Venice Charter, the permission for modifications aligned with current usage needs as stated in the ICOMOS Charter on the Built Vernacular Heritage, and performance criteria mandated by national/international energy-efficiency standards within a unified framework. The research problem stems from the observation that historic madrasa courtyards often remain underutilized during colder seasons due to functional obsolescence, poor user comfort, and rising operational costs. In current restoration practices, courtyard roofs are frequently constructed using steel-glass structures; however, the design process often lacks sufficient microclimatic simulation. This leads to greenhouse effects, increased relative humidity, and excessive cooling loads, which in turn result in short-term HVAC investments and, in the medium to long term, material degradation and structural deterioration. Accordingly, the core research question is formulated as follows: 'Can a roof covering design be developed using parametric design tools that simultaneously optimizes energy, thermal comfort, and conservation principles in historic open-courtyard structures?' The research aims are structured in three stages: (1) To convert the linear-formal identity of the historic structure into quantitative data and numerically assess visual compatibility in the design of a contemporary roof covering; (2) To develop a parametric decision-support model that evaluates microclimate, thermal comfort, and energy performance collectively; (3) To validate the model on a case study in compliance with architectural authenticity, structural integrity, and conservation legislation. The case is limited to open-courtyard madrasas with arcaded layouts dating to the 16th–17th centuries, found throughout the Ottoman Empire. An inventory study of over 100 madrasas dated to this period was conducted; based on plan typology, authenticity, climate zone, and maintenance history, the case study selected was the Şehzade Mehmet Madrasa, considered an early work of Mimar Sinan and located in Istanbul's Csa (Mediterranean, dry-summer, mild-winter) climate. The hypothesis set is organized around four main axes: (H1) The linear conformity algorithm aligns contemporary patterns with historic proportions; (H2) Double-layer ETFE material, through transparent–semi-transparent modulation, reduces total energy consumption; (H3) Parametric optimization balances heating-cooling loads while maintaining PMV-PPD and SET indicators within ASHRAE 55 limits; (H4) The selected design fulfills the Venice Charter's criteria of reversibility and distinguishability through lightweight materials and demountable structural details. The methodology consists of literature review, parametric modeling, integrated simulation, and validation. In the first step, current studies on adaptive reuse, contemporary additions, ETFE technology, microclimate management, and multi-objective optimization were synthesized. In the modeling phase, the 'linear density' algorithm developed by Tekin et al. (2022) was used in Rhinoceros–Grasshopper to extract the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal line ratios of the madrasa. Six patterns were generated using the Parakeet plugin: two traditional Islamic star patterns, a square modular grid, an adaptive grid, and Voronoi and Delaunay diagrams. In terms of material, fully transparent ETFE (light transmittance 80%, SHGC 0.82) and three variants with different frit densities (43%/0.46; 28%/0.33; 20%/0.25) were used. Combining pattern, material, and two geometric variables (frit band position and surface area) yielded 576 variations. Energy and comfort simulations were conducted using the Ladybug–Honeybee interface and the EnergyPlus engine, employing hourly resolution with the Istanbul TMY file. Building envelope definitions included wall sections composed of limestone, Horasan mortar, and brick, and vault roofing sections based on their thermophysical equivalents; U-values were adjusted according to TS 825 standards. Internal loads were derived from the 'large office' schedule adapted to the building's current usage scenario. In enclosed spaces, the HB Ideal Air module operated with 70% heat recovery efficiency, while in the courtyard, winter heating and summer night-cooling strategies with natural ventilation were tested. Variations were compiled using TT-Toolbox and Colibri in Excel-CSV format, and energy-comfort-aesthetic correlations were visualized using Pareto analysis on Design Explorer. For model reliability, the same parametric volume was reconstructed in IES-VE; comparisons of total EUI, PMV, operative temperature, and relative humidity showed deviations within a ±5% range. Key findings are as follows: Based on linear conformity scores, gridal-modular patterns C1/C2 achieved over 85% correlation with the historic façade's horizontal–vertical–diagonal ratios and ranked highest in energy-comfort on the Pareto front. Among these, 28% fritted ETFE (SHGC 0.33) optimized heating–cooling balance by preventing summer overheating while preserving passive heat gains in winter. In the existing madrasa, the annual total energy use intensity (EUI) is 713 kWh/m², of which 609 kWh/m² is for heating and 104 kWh/m² for cooling. In courtyard roof scenarios, total EUI decreased to the 376–437 kWh/m² range; heating demand dropped by 52–57%, and total consumption by 38–47%. Although cooling load increased by up to 40% in fully transparent variations, the use of fritted ETFE limited this rise to around 4%. During the winter design week, indoor air temperatures in the courtyard, arcade, and iwan rose from 10–11 °C to 18–19 °C; PMV improved from –1.4 to –0.5, and PPD declined from 26% to 10–12%. In the summer design week, SET fell from 30–31 °C to 26–28 °C, PMV from +1.1 to a +0.36–0.76 range, and PPD from around 25% to 8–17%. Mean radiant and operative temperatures showed similar improvements. Conclusions and recommendations are summarized under five points: (1) The parametric model provides a numerical basis for multi-criteria restoration decisions and can be adapted to similar courtyard structures like caravanserais and archaeological shelters; (2) The double-layer ETFE cushion system offers up to 50% heating energy savings and acceptable summer comfort with minimal intervention to the historic fabric; (3) The linear conformity algorithm enables objective verification of the 'original–new' relationship for heritage committees; (4) Post-implementation monitoring with RH sensors and maintenance of demountable structures extends material life; (5) Future studies should expand the model with curved shell geometries, dynamic frit ratios, and life cycle cost analysis. Thus, the research demonstrates that contemporary additions to historic buildings should be conceived not merely as formal complements but as holistic restoration strategies that also account for energy–thermal comfort optimization and material sustainability.Çalışma, tarihî çevrede çağdaş müdahale tartışmaları bağlamında, 16-17. yüzyıl Osmanlı dönemine ait açık-avlulu medrese yapılarının avlu üst örtülerinin kapatılmalarında koruma, estetik, mikroklima, termal konfor ve enerji performansı bakımından nasıl optimize edilebileceğini araştırır.

D'Anzi, Brunella/0000-0002-9361-3142Measurements of fiducial and total inclusive cross sections for W and Z boson production are presented in proton-proton collisions at root s = 5.02 and 13TeV. Electron and muon decay modes (l = e or mu) are studied in the data collected with the CMS detector in 2017, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity. The data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 298 +/- 6 pb(-1) at 5.02TeV and 206 +/- 5 pb(-1) at 13TeV. Measured values of the products of the total inclusive cross sections and the branching fractions at 5.02TeV are sigma(pp -> W+ X)B(W -> l nu) = 7300 +/- 10 (stat) +/- 60 (syst) +/- 140 (lumi) pb, and sigma(pp -> Z+ X)B(Z -> l(+) l(-)) = 669 +/- 2 (stat)+/- 6 (syst)+/- 13 (lumi) pb for the dilepton invariant mass in the range of 60-120 GeV. The corresponding results at 13TeV are 20480 +/- 10 (stat)+/- 170 (syst)+/- 470 (lumi) pb and 1952 +/- 4 (stat)+/- 18 (syst)+/- 45 (lumi) pb. The measured values agree with cross section calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Fiducial and total inclusive cross sections, ratios of cross sections of W+ and W- production as well as inclusive W and Z boson production, and ratios of these measurements at 5.02 and 13TeV are reported. We congratulate our colleagues in the CERN accelerator departments for the excellent performance of the LHC and thank the technical and administrative staffs at CERN and at other CMS institutes for their contributions to the success of the CMS effort. Abandoning land cultivation is a phenomenon whose underlying drivers remain insufficiently understood. This study examined the possible associations between selected variables and landowners' decisions to cease cultivation in the Olkusz district (southern Poland), covering an area of 620 km2 and including 82 villages. To assess the extent of abandonment, expert evaluation was applied, based on the analysis of changes recorded in the Corine Land Cover databases (1990 and 2018) and airborne laser scanning data. The latter enabled a detailed assessment of vegetation structure-particularly forest succession-within areas traditionally used for agriculture. The influence of natural, social, and economic factors was analyzed using a logistic regression model. The results obtained indicate that only plot size and land quality should be considered as factors that may influence landowners' decisions to discontinue agricultural production. All other examined factors proved to be insignificant

Moving Average Filter Based Dstatcom Control Approach

Self-excited induction generators (SEIGs) are commonly preferred in standalone renewable energy systems due to their low cost and robust construction. However, the voltage and frequency stability at the SEIG output may be adversely affected by varying reactive and active power demands depending on the load profile. In such systems, DSTATCOM is used to provide voltage and frequency regulation, and its performance largely depends on the applied control algorithm. In this study, a moving average filter (MAF) based dq control algorithm is proposed for DSTATCOM supported SEIG systems. The MAF structure contributes to more accurate calculation of reference source currents by reducing the effect of harmonic content. The proposed control method is tested under nonlinear load and unbalanced-nonlinear load conditions. The results show that the system maintains voltage and frequency stability and successfully suppresses disturbances

Reading Place in a Historical Context Through Phenomena in Architectural Competitions

Cities are dynamic memory spaces connecting the past and the future, nourishing social memory and identity. Public spaces, as the most significant spatial components of cities, have become both physical and social heritage symbols of urban culture. This article focuses on how architectural competitions examine the geographical, historical, and cultural characteristics of places in public space design and the design decisions related to these contexts. The study investigates the concept of place in architecture through original projects developed for two architectural idea competitions. It deeply analyzes the integration of the designed space with its historical context, urban memory, and phenomenological experiences established with city dwellers. The importance of architectural place for public spaces was explored through award-winning projects. Specifically, the projects "Sazlık 2.0" and "Hazan" highlight the necessity of developing designs with a comprehensive approach that transcends physical boundaries, incorporating cultural, historical, and geographical elements. The relationship with place has been reduced to a semantic dimension through phenomenological experiences. This situation has been defined as an encounter with an abstract idea, a historical, cultural entity or settled memories in a particular place rather than a geographical location in the essence of the phenomenological experience. The findings emphasize that designs based on urban memory increase the likelihood of success, as evidenced by the award-winning projects where historical, cultural, and geographical features were prominently addressed through a direct connection with the place. In conclusion, the study advocates for rethinking public spaces situated within the historical urban memory not merely as physical entities but as components shaped by time, culture, and the environment, as demonstrated by the design alternatives developed for architectural competitions

A New Analytical Approach to Determining the Level of Damage Due to the Construction of Metro Tunnels in Existing Reinforced Concrete Buildings

Interpreting and analyzing these problems as accurately as possible is quite challenging. This is because the problem depends on numerous parameters, including the location of the tunnel relative to the structure, the profile and mechanical properties of the surrounding soil, the foundation type and dimensions of the existing structure above the tunnel, the type of structural system of the superstructure, the geometry of the structure, and the load distribution on the tunnel. Currently, the literature contains charts and empirical correlations that consider the tunnel location to solve this problem. These methods are called first- and second-stage methods and are used as rapid assessment methods. These methods aim to determine superstructure damage based on the amount of settlement in the foundation. However, determining the distribution and extent of damage to the superstructure is a highly complex engineering problem. In this context, the primary objective of the presented study is to examine the effects of the construction of subway tunnels currently in the project phase on the superstructure and the extent of damage that may occur to the superstructure. Thus, it is aimed to create an important literature base for new generation studies especially on soil and superstructure modeling and to benefit from this base and as a projection for new studies. In this study, among the other parameters affecting the tunnel-superstructure interaction: a) geotechnical parameters for finite element analysis b) parameters used for the tunnel (behavior type, axial stiffness, bending stiffness, unit weight, Poisson's ratio) c) parameters used for the soil (material model, unit volume weight, saturated unit volume weight, Young's modulus, cohesion, internal friction angle, dilatancy angle, stiffness coefficient) d) parameters used for the foundation (axial stiffness, bending stiffness, unit weight, Poisson's ratio) e) distance of the superstructure from the tunnel center projection f) width and length ratios of the superstructure g) foundation type of the superstructure h) purpose of use of the superstructure i) number of stories of the buildings coincident with the route j) foundation depths (40 cm – 50 cm – 60 cm) were taken as basis for soil, building and tunnel design modeling with the Plaxis program. Foundation deformation values were taken from the analysis results of the Plaxis program. The displacement values obtained from the analysis results obtained from the Plaxis 2D program were applied as additional settlement to the structure. The foundation settlements obtained from the Plaxis analysis results were entered into the ETABS program, and analyses were conducted for 72 different cases using these settlement values. This allowed us to examine the changes in cross-sectional effects resulting from additional settlements for each case. When the percentage change tables generated by moment and shear force values of beams and columns from the ETABS program were examined, it was observed that the soil class ZE, when the tunnel was located at the center of the building, showed severe damage to some beams and significant damage to the first-floor columns. The soil class ZA, when the tunnel was located outside the building, showed no damage to the columns and beams. The damage and distribution of the structural system resulting from the displacements occurring undur the foundation were determined

In this thesis, the environmental impacts of mining activities carried out in a total of 10 coal fields operated by the Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKİ) were evaluated using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Of these sites, nine are operated by open-pit mining and one by underground mining. The sites are geographically distributed across the Aegean (3 sites), Marmara (3 sites), Central Anatolia (3 sites), and Eastern Anatolia (1 site) regions. The entire process, from coal extraction to its delivery to thermal power plants, was modeled using the SimaPro software in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. Environmental burdens were comprehensively identified through the ReCiPe impact assessment method. Within the scope of LCA, 17 environmental impact categories were evaluated, including energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, acidification potential, human health effects, water use, and ecotoxicity. The analysis results revealed that coal mining operations exert particularly high environmental pressure in terms of climate change and fossil resource depletion. Accordingly, three improvement scenarios were developed to mitigate environmental impacts: the utilization of inactive mining sites for solar power plant (SPP) installations, the replacement of diesel-powered heavy machinery with electric drive systems, and the substitution of diesel with biodiesel in mining equipment. Each scenario was individually modeled and compared to the current situation in order to assess their potential for environmental improvement. The findings demonstrate that all three scenarios have the potential to enhance environmental performance. In this context, the study provides valuable input for the restructuring of coal mining processes in Turkey from a sustainability perspective.Bu tez çalışmasında, Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri'ne (TKİ) ait toplam 10 kömür sahasında yürütülen madencilik faaliyetlerinin çevresel etkileri, yaşam döngüsü analizi (YDA) metodolojisi kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Söz konusu sahalardan 9'u açık ocak, 1'i ise yer altı işletme yöntemine sahiptir.

Spatial Mineral Chemistry of Volcanic Rocks from the Karacadağ Volcanic Complex and Karapinar Volcanic Field (Central Anatolia): Evidence for a Trans-Crustal Magmatic System

    No full text
This research investigates the trans-crustal magmatic evolution of the Karacada ; gbreve; Volcanic Complex (KCVC)-Karap ; imath;nar Volcanic Field (KPVF) in Central Anatolia, with a particular focus on the major and trace element compositions of clinopyroxene and amphibole minerals from basaltic and andesitic lavas. Pliocene-aged Karacada ; gbreve; andesites and Quaternary-aged Karap ; imath;nar basalts contain various crystal cargoes, including crystal clots, several types of enclaves, xenocrysts, autocrysts, and antecrysts, suggesting microscale heterogeneity and potentially reflecting distinct petrogenetic histories. The EPMA results reveal that clinopyroxenes are compositionally diopside to augite, while amphiboles range from magnesio-hornblende, tschermakite, sadanagaite to pargasite. The LA-ICP-MS analyses allow for the classification of four pyroxene (Px-I to Px-IV) and six amphibole types (Amp-I to Amp-VI). Among these, Px-I, Amp-I, Amp-II, and Amp-IV exhibit relatively primitive geochemical signatures compared to their host rocks. These characteristics are consistent with crystallization from earlier, less evolved magmatic pulses, supporting their interpretation as antecrysts, whereas the others are considered as autocrysts. Thermobarometric calculations reveal that amphiboles in the KKVC suite crystallized at pressures ranging from 0.8 to 5.4 kbar, indicating magma storage across both shallow and deep crustal levels. However, those of clinopyroxenes yield 4-9 kbar and 1025-1116 degrees C, suggesting derivation from deeper reservoirs. Clinopyroxene P-T calculations for the KPVF basalts indicate high-pressure crystallization (12-14 kbar) at temperatures up to 1266 degrees C, reflecting deep crustal magma storage. All obtained data reveal open-system magma reservoirs with repeated mixing and recharge, triggering Quaternary eruptions and highlighting the role of trans-crustal magmatic system in Central Anatolia. This study is part of the Ph.D. thesis of the first author and funded by TUBITAK project number 118Y252, Selcuk University BAP project number 17401117, and Selcuk University OEYP project number 2016-OEYP-041.TUBITAK [118Y252]; Selcuk University BAP [17401117]; Selcuk University OEYP [2016-OEYP-041

Domestic and industrial wastes are among the primary causes of environmental pollution. A significant portion of this pollution stems from the degradation of water resources, with dyes present in wastewater playing a crucial role in this problem. Even at low concentrations, these dye pollutants can negatively impact the usability of water sources. Therefore, color removal from dye-containing wastewater, especially originating from the textile industry, is of great environmental importance. In this study, the removal of color from wastewater caused by reactive dyes commonly used in the textile industry was investigated through adsorption under optimized conditions. For this purpose, natural and economical waste materials such as hazelnut shell (HS) and cotton waste (CW) were selected as adsorbents. Methylene blue (MB), a basic dye classified under reactive dyes, was used as the adsorbate. In addition, to obtain forms with specific physicochemical properties and optimal performance, HS and CW were coated with acrylic acid (AA), a natural acid, using the Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) technique. In the second part of the study, the methylene blue removal capacities of the modified materials, namely poly(acrylic acid)-coated HS (PAA@HS) and CW (PAA@CW), were examined. The modified adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM/EDX, BET, and particle size analysis. The effects of parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption process were also analyzed in detail. The experimental data were applied to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. Among these, the Langmuir model was found to be the best fit. According to this model, the maximum adsorption capacities (qmax) of PAA@HS and PAA@CW at 25 °C were calculated as 199.71 mg·g⁻¹ and 284.696 mg·g⁻¹, respectively. Kinetic data were evaluated using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models to determine the most suitable kinetic mechanism. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy change (ΔG⁰), enthalpy change (ΔH⁰), and entropy change (ΔS⁰) were calculated based on adsorption experiments at various temperatures. The results of thermodynamic analyses indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic, feasible, and spontaneous.
