Sinkhole detection via deep learning using DEM images
Sinkholes, commonly observed in karstic regions, are landforms with unpredictable formation time and location. These landforms are an important natural disaster that threaten human life and country economies. Sinkholes, observed as cover collapse or depressions in nature, may be easily identified with remote sensing methods (digital elevation models, satellite and aerial photographs, etc.). These methods reduce time and labor burdens before field investigations. In this study, the aim was to accurately identify sinkholes by training a deep learning method with hillshade images obtained from DEM data. In line with this aim, the study area was identified as the Karapınar region (Konya, Türkiye), where many sinkholes have formed in recent periods linked to climatological and anthropological factors. In this study, 5 different (nano, small, medium, large and x-large) sinkhole detection models were developed using YOLO v8. The developed models provided high success rates in detecting sinkholes with different diameters and depths. © The Author(s) 2025.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTA
Impact of Heating on Olive Oil: Oxidative Changes and Physicochemical Properties
This study aimed to analyze the physicochemical parameters of various brands of olive oil (OO) available in the local markets of Hyderabad, Pakistan. The parameters studied include concentrations of chlorophyll, β-carotene, free fatty acid (FFA), conjugated diene (CD), conjugated triene (CT), and oxidative stability. The results showed that none of the analyzed (OO) is recommended for cooking due to high FFA levels, but all except one could be used as salad oil. Through a systematic analysis, we also examined the impact of heating on chlorophyll and β - carotene levels in commercial OO brands. Our findings elucidate the varying responses of OO brands to heating, with distinct alterations observed in chlorophyll, and β -carotene levels. Furthermore, the FTIR analysis provided valuable insights into the molecular changes and oxidative stability of the oils under different heating conditions. These findings have significant implications for both consumers and the OO industry, as they provide valuable insights into the selection of high-quality OO brands that maintain their nutritional integrity and flavor profiles during cooking

The jet axis decorrelation is defined as the angular difference between two definitions of the jet axis. It is obtained by applying two recombination schemes on all the constituents of a given jet reconstructed by the anti-k(T) sequential algorithm with a distance parameter of R = 0.4. The data set, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.66 nb(-1), was collected in 2018 with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The jet axis decorrelations are examined across collision centrality selections and intervals of jet transverse momentum. A centrality dependent evolution of the measured distributions is observed, with a progressive narrowing seen in more central events. This narrowing could result from medium-induced modification of the internal jet structure or reflect color charge effects in energy loss. This new measurement probes jet substructure in previously unexplored kinematic domains and show great promise for providing new insights on the color charge dependence of energy loss to jet-quenching models. We congratulate our colleagues in the CERN accelerator departments for the excellent performance of the LHC and thank the technical and administrative staffs at CERN and at other CMS institutes for their contributions to the success of the CMS effort. The Impact of Urban Growth on Land Surface Temperature in Konya Province's Selçuklu District
The ecosystem and climate are significantly impacted by population increase and rapid, uncontrolled urbanization. Green, moisture-retaining natural environments become impermeable artificial surfaces as a result of urbanization, changes in land cover, and the rate of melting. These changes in land cover caused by humans have a big impact on the microclimate. The urban environment gets hotter due to the rise in artificial surfaces and the fall in greenery, particularly in regular areas. Heat islands are what these situations are known as. This study uses data from Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS Konya for the years 1985-2005-2015-2021 of the Sel ; ccedil;uklu district, a highly developed province with a population and service sector resulting from industrial development between 1985 and 2015, as well as sensors and industrial zones. The impact of increase on Land Surface Temperature (LST) was explored. Land surface temperature tests conducted separately for residential and industrial zones, a significant rise was noted in industrial areas. Increased land surface temperatures caused by industrialization in the Sel ; ccedil;uk region also impacted the villages nearby, resulting in an increase in land surface temperature in areas close to the industrial area. This leads us to the conclusion that industrial regions have a greater impact on temperature than residential areas
This thesis aims to predict the selling prices of vehicles using machine learning algorithms based on real data from the second-hand car market in Turkey. Nowadays, many variables are effective in determining vehicle prices and price ranges vary widely, which creates uncertainty for buyers and sellers. In this context, the development of objective and consistent price prediction models with data-driven approaches both supports sectoral decision-making processes and increases user safety. In the study, the dataset was created using a web scraping tool from online vehicle listing platforms. The scraping process focused only on Volkswagen brand vehicles, and basic attributes such as model year, mileage, fuel type, gear type and engine displacement were collected. The collected data were cleaned from missing and inconsistent observations, categorical variables were digitised and numerical data were subjected to normalisation process. The resulting dataset provides a clean and balanced structure for the analysis, consisting of approximately 1000 rows and 10-11 attributes. The price prediction problem is considered as a regression type machine learning problem. Four different algorithms were selected and compared: decision trees, k-nearest neighbors (KNN), random forest and support vector machines (SVM). Each algorithm was tested with both traditional data splitting strategies (80% training - 20% testing, 90% training - 10% testing) and k-fold cross-validation with different k values from 5 to 10. Model performances were evaluated multidimensionally. The metrics used included R², Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Mean Deviation Value (MDV). The results showed that the highest accuracy and lowest error rates were obtained in the random forest algorithm. This model gave the best result in prediction accuracy with an R² value of over 95% and a MAPE value of only about 6.9%. The KNN algorithm was also considered as a strong alternative with low error metrics. On the other hand, it was observed that the decision tree algorithm produced unstable results despite its comprehensibility, while the SVM algorithm experienced performance fluctuations in some data bins due to parameter sensitivity. As a result, the study provides a comparative analysis of four different algorithms with real-world data and reveals the most appropriate machine learning method for used car price prediction. While the random forest model gives the most successful results in terms of stability, generalisability and accuracy, the advantages and disadvantages of the other algorithms under certain conditions are revealed. This thesis presents a decision support system design that can be applied in the field of used car pricing with both its methodological scope and data processing processes, and also proposes a versatile modelling approach that will shed light on future studies

GNSS Sinyal Kayıplarında İHA'ların Konumlandırılması için Derin Öğrenme Tabanlı Görsel ve Ataletsel Veri Füzyonu
In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have begun to be used in many application areas. In applications where UAVs are used, the accuracy of location information directly affects the success of these applications. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are widely used for location information. However, GNSS is interrupted in closed or difficult environments. In order to prevent this situation and provide a healthy positioning, many methods that can work independently of the GNSS signal have been proposed. Visual and Inertial data have been used separately or combined in GNSS independent methods, which are especially successful in indoor positioning. Although classical image and sensor processing methods were first used for positioning, developments in the field of deep learning have also affected this field. In recent years, deep learning-based methods have been proposed and successful for many operations performed with classical methods in positioning. Although deep learning-based methods have begun to surpass classical methods, the development of both types of methods has continued. In this thesis, Deep Attention-Based Visual Inertial Positioning System has been proposed for UAV positioning in cases where GNSS signal losses occur. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with an integrated attention mechanism is proposed for processing visual data and extracting positioning features. Attention-based Hierarchical Long Short-Term Memory (AHLSTM) model is used for processing inertial data and extracting positioning features. Visual and inertial features obtained with attention mechanisms are integrated with deep learning-based fusion structures to achieve high accuracy location estimation. Using the attention mechanism in visual and inertial data provides a significant performance increase by focusing on prominent regions in terms of location determination. In addition, an original location approach based solely on Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data is presented within the scope of the thesis. In this method, IMU data is used to model locational change in space instead of directly producing location information. The developed systems are open source and have been tested on datasets created in a simulation environment. The results show that attention mechanisms provide reliable and highly accurate location independent of GNSS when used with visual and inertial data. Ataletsel verilerin işlenmesi ve konumlandırma özelliklerinin çıkartılması için Dikkat Tabanlı Hiyerarşik Uzun Kısa Süreli Bellek (Attention-based Hierarchical Long Short-Term Memory (AHLSTM)) modeli kullanılmıştır.
Experimental Analysis of Various Deep Learning Methods for Predicting Displacements in an Open Pit Coal Mine
Slope failure is a problem that can occur on slopes formed by natural or unnatural means for various reasons and as a result, can cause serious loss of life and property. This is also crucial in open pit mines. Therefore, it is critical to constantly monitor slope deformations and predict a possible slide that may occur in the future. Predicting the initial trend behavior of a created slope is at least as important as estimating slope failure. Therefore, in this study, we tried to estimate slope stability with a small number of deformation data. In this study we aimed to compare several deep learning methods in using time series prediction with limited data. For this purpose, we applied MLP, GRU, LSTM Networks, biLSTM and a hybrid structure of CNN-RNN methods. We utilized data taken from three stations settled in an open pit mine slope and predicted the compound deformation value of x-, y- and z-direction in these slopes. The performance was compared with respect to the root mean squared error (RMSE) and coefficient of correction (R2) values. The minimum RMSE was obtained as 0.2293 and maximum R2 was reached as 0.9984 by the GRU method on the third station's data
Diabetic Retinopathy Detection With Deep Learning
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when glucose in the blood remains constantly high due to insulin not being produced or used properly and a deterioration in the insulin mechanism of the pancreas. Prolonging this dysregulation of glucose levels causes serious damage to blood vessels. Diabetics are likely to experience kidney problems, eye damage, bleeding gums, and nerve damage. Eye damage that occurs in diabetic patients is called Diabetic Retinopathy. This study aims to detect Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and grade it. Two different datasets obtained from the Kaggle platform were used for the study. The first dataset consists of images of varying sizes and has imbalanced class distributions. The second dataset is a dataset in which class distributions are made more balanced through manual data augmentation and resizing of the first dataset. In addition, in the study, two different new data sets were obtained by applying one-channel and three-channel discrete wavelet transforms separately from images in the first dataset Six different deep learning architectures were evaluated for Diabetic Retinopathy detection, and optimum hyperparameters were detected. As a result of the studies carried out, the highest accuracy values were achieved with YOLOv8n deep learning architecture. In the first data set, 86.79% accuracy was achieved with the YOLOv8n architecture, when the batch size and the learning rate were 16 and 10-3 and the optimization algorithm was Adam. Additionally, the other evaluation metrics for this model were calculated as follows: 46% precision, 68% sensitivity, 51% F1 score, and 64.20% Kappa.
