Assessing Microstructural, Biomechanical, and Biocompatible Properties of TiNb Alloys for Potential Use as Load-Bearing Implants

    No full text
Titanium-Niobium (TiNb) alloys are commonly employed in a number of implantable devices, yet concerns exist regarding their use in implantology owing to the biomechanical mismatch between the implant and the host tissue. Therefore, to balance the mechanical performance of the load-bearing implant with bone, TiNb alloys with differing porosities were fabricated by powder metallurgy combined with spacer material. Microstructures and phase constituents were characterized with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The mechanical properties were tested by uniaxial compression, and the corrosion performance was determined via a potentiodynamic polarization experiment. To evaluate a highly matched potential implant with the host, biocompatibilities such as cell viability and proliferation rate, fibronectin adsorption, plasmid-DNA interaction, and an SEM micrograph showing the cell morphology were examined in detail. The results showed that the alloys displayed open and closed pores with a uniform pore size and distribution, which allowed for cell adherence and other cellular activities. The alloys with low porosity displayed compressive strength between 618 MPa and 1295 MPa, while the alloys with high porosity showed significantly lower strength, ranging from 48 MPa to 331 MPa. The biological evaluation of the alloys demonstrated good cell attachment and proliferation rates. The EPSRC Future LiME Hub [EP/N007638/1]; EPSRC Future LiME Hub; Republic of Turkey Ministry of National EducationThe EPSRC Future LiME Hub (EP/N007638/1); PhD studentship, the Republic of Turkey Ministry of National Education

Introducing Statistical Operators: Boundedness, Continuity, and Compactness

    No full text
Many studies have been conducted on statistical convergence, which remains an area of active research. Since its introduction, statistical convergence has found applications in many fields. Nevertheless, there is a shortage of studies related to operator theory; especially of those on continuous, bounded, and compact operators. We explore the notions of statistical boundedness, continuity, and compactness of operators between normed spaces, establishing connections between these concepts and their counterparts in the traditional normed space theory. Additionally, we provide some examples and results that demonstrate the behavior and implications of statistical convergence in operator theory

Many farming households in Nigeria are deprived, and poor, hence, the need for economic empowerment intervention. Sweetpotato production, due to its short cycle and low input requirement could be projected on a larger scale for farming households’ economic empowerment. However, data regarding ability of sweetpotato farming for farming households’ economic empowerment is scarce. Therefore, farming households’ sweetpotato production and economic empowerment in Nigeria’s Niger-Delta Area was investigated. 364 sweetpotato farming households were chosen through a five-stage sample process. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, T-test, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data that interview schedule was used to collect. Most respondents were female and aged 42.7±11.9 years. Farm size; farming experience; and income from sweetpotato, other crops, and non-crop livelihood activities were 2.6±3.4 hectares; 17.2±12.4 years; and ?1,327,723.0±1,639,414.0 yearly, ?2,385,815.0±2,615,273.0 yearly, and ?1,828,004.0±2,336,270.0 yearly, respectively. The sweetpotato production and economic empowerment were low and high amongst farming households, respectively. Age, farm size and income from sweet potato were significantly related to economic empowerment. The economic empowerment status of high and low sweetpotato producers differed significantly. Between farming households with low and high income from sweetpotato production, their economic empowerment status significantly differed. Farming households’ economic empowerment was mostly predicted by farming experience; and income from sweetpotato, and non-crop livelihood activities. Sweetpotato production influenced farming households' ability to prosper economically. Agricultural policies oriented towards improving economic empowerment should be promoted to emphasize increased sweetpotato production

Ultraviolet light curing is used frequently in the fields of optics and photonics. It is important to know the optical features of the materials that are used in these fields, according to the usage field more sensitive measurement methods are required. Knowing the refractive indices of ultraviolet light cured optical adhesive materials, which are particularly useful for assembling optical components, is an essential parameter for accurate device design and manufacturing. Aim of this thesis is to determine the refractive index of a urethane-acrylate optical adhesive material cured with ultraviolet light using optical phase measurement method. To reach that aim, firstly the urethane-acrylate adhesive material has been cured with a LED light source with a wavelength interval of 365-405 nm. To determine the thickness of the sample, which is prepared in a thin film form, examination has been carried out with SEM (scanning electron microscope). Samples, with their thickness measured in this way, are imaged with single wavelength diffraction phase microscopy (SWDPM) and their surface phase profile has been obtained with Fourier transformation technique and from this profile the refractive index has been calculated. In literature, SWDPM setup has never been used in order to measure the refractive index of transparent materials produced in a thin film form or cured with ultraviolet light. In that aspect this thesis subject provides original contribution to the literature as a method

Modeling the Effect of Climate Change on Evapotranspiration in the Thrace Region

    No full text
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of climate change on reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and sunflower and wheat evapotranspiration (ETs and ETw, respectively) in the Trakya Region of T & uuml;rkiye. ETo Calculator (version 3.2) and CROPWAT 8.0 were used to compute ETo and ET in the reference period (1970-1990), short- (2016-2025), mid- (2046-2055), and long- (2076-2085) terms. Additionally, ETo was tested in 2012 and ETo was simulated for every 1 degrees C temperature increase up to 5 degrees C in the reference period. Calculated ETo and ET values for the future were compared with the reference period. For the future, climate data estimated by RegCM3 Regional Climate Model, A2 scenario were used. While the average ETo value of the reference period was 3.3 mm day-1, it was 3.0 mm day-1 in 2012. Compared to the reference period, ETo values change by -3% (3.2 mm day-1), 9% (3.6 mm day-1), and 21% (4.0 mm day-1) in the short-, mid-, and long-term, respectively. The 575 mm ET deficit calculated during the vegetation period of sunflower in the model reference period was forecasted to change by -11% (514 mm), +15% (660 mm), and +25% (721 mm) in the short-, mid-, and long-term, respectively. For wheat, while 59 mm of excess water was calculated in the reference period, it became 193 mm (+227%) in the short-term and a water deficit of 8 mm (-113%) and 6 mm (-110%) in the mid- and long-term, respectively. In addition, it is estimated that there will be an increase of 0.1 mm day-1 (4%) in ETo values for each 1 degrees C temperature increase compared to the reference period (1970-1990). It was concluded that climate change in the Trakya Region will not significantly affect wheat farming; however, it will cause a serious water deficit in sunflower production.Tekirdag Namimath;k Kemal University Scientific Research Projects, Turkiye [NKUBAP.00.24.AR.12.02]This study supported by the Tekirdag Nam & imath;k Kemal University Scientific Research Projects (Project No: NKUBAP.00.24.AR.12.02), Turkiye

Flavobacterium acetivorans sp. nov. and Flavobacterium galactosidilyticum sp. nov., psychrotolerant flavobacteria isolated from cultivated fish

    No full text
Two yellow- coloured strains, F- 29T and F- 340T, were isolated from fish farms in Antalya and Mugla in 2015 and 2017 during surveillance studies. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that both strains belong to the genus Flavobacterium. A polyphasic approach involving a comprehensive genome analysis was employed to ascertain the taxonomic provenance of the strains. The overall genome- relatedness indices of digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) between the strains and the other members of the genus Flavobacterium were found to be well below the established thresholds of 70 and 95 %, respectively. The whole- genome- based phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain F- 29T is closely related to Flavobacterium granuli (dDDH 39.3 % and ANI 89.4 %), while strain F- 340T has a close relationship with the type strain of Flavobacterium pygoscelis (dDDH 25.6 % and ANI 81.5 %). Both strains were psychrotolerant with an optimum growth temperature of 25 degrees C. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of the strains were typical of the genus Flavobacterium. Both strains had phosphatidylethanolamine, aminolipids and unidentified lipids in their polar lipid profile and MK- 6 as the isoprenoid quinone. The major fatty acids were iso- C15: 0 and anteiso- C15:0. The genome size of the strains was 3.5 Mb, while G+C contents were 35.3 mol% for strain F-29T and 33.4 mol% for strain F- 340T. Overall, the characterizations confirmed that both strains are representatives of two novel species within the genus Flavobacterium, for which the names Flavobacterium acetivorans sp. nov. and Flavobacterium galactosidilyticum sp. nov. are proposed, with F- 29T (JCM 34193T=KCTC 82253T) and F- 340T (JCM 34203T=KCTC 82263T) as the type strains, respectively.Bursa Uludag University [TGA-2023-1219]This research was supported by The Research Fund of Bursa Uludag University (Project Number: TGA-2023-1219)

Evaluation of Parameters Affecting Earthquake Damage Using a GIS-based Random Forests Machine Learning Model: The Case of the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaras Earthquakes in Türkiye

    No full text
T & uuml;rkiye is a geographical feature with intense seismic activity due to its tectonic features. Despite such a high earthquake risk, the evaluation of parameters affecting earthquake damage is still very inadequate in T & uuml;rkiye. The aim of this study was to evaluate the parameters affecting earthquake damage in the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake, which caused the highest number of casualties in the history of the Republic of T & uuml;rkiye. Therefore, data were produced to understand the differences in the behavior of structures in the case of an earthquake hazard in different parts of T & uuml;rkiye. The study used sample data from 198,634 buildings with varying types of structural damage in residential areas where the earthquake had been felt. The relationship between these data and key factors causing structural damage was analyzed using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based Random Forests (RF) Machine Learning (ML) model. As a result of this study, it was understood that the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquakes caused structural damage as a result of different combinations of building age, local soil conditions, distance to fault lines, distance to the epicenter, ground slip velocity, maximum ground velocity, and soil liquefaction effect factor
