Development of IoT based Security System for Fire Monitoring and Prevention in Tanzanian Industries
Over the past years, there have been great advances in ICTs which have led to the development of fire monitoring and prevention systems. Despite the existence of these solutions, fire incidents especially in Tanzanian have been a major problem in industries which leads to the destruction of materials and loss of lives. With the help of wireless sensor networks (WSN) and the internet of things (IoT), the monitoring and prevention of fire outbreaks become easy and reliable. The present work explores the existing fire monitoring and prevention systems and then, designs and develops an innovative security system for early fire monitoring and prevention in Tanzanian industries through the use of emerging technologies such as WSN and IoT. The results of the system evaluation show that 88% of users were satisfied with its functionalities. This is because the system works in real-time and through the use of different sensors such as DHT sensor, MQ2 sensor, and Flame sensor to monitor humidity, temperature, smoke, flammable gasses, and fire outbreak in the different work areas. With the use of the mobile application and cloud subsystem, the developed system can timely alert the users via their mobile phones on the status of the fire and different parameters
Analysis of the Effect of Information Quality and Easiness on Satisfaction through User Trust of SIAKAD University of Merdeka Malang, Indonesia
This study aims to analyze the influence of information quality and ease on trust, to analyze the influence of information quality and ease on user satisfaction, to analyze the effect of trust on user satisfaction and to analyze information quality and ease on user satisfaction through the trust of SIAKAD Unmer Malang. The sample in this study were 75 students. The data analysis technique used path analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, it shows that the quality of information and ease have an effect on trust, which means that quality SIAKAD information supported by ease of operation can increase trust. Information quality and ease have an effect on user satisfaction. This means that user satisfaction can be built through the provision of quality information and ease of use of SIAKAD. Trust affects user satisfaction, which means thatuser trust can build user satisfaction because ease of use is reflected in being satisfied with the information presented at SIAKAD making it easier for activities. Trust mediates the effect of information quality and ease on user satisfaction. This means that user satisfaction can be built if users feel that the information presented is of high quality and makes it easy to operate SIAKAD
Proposed Automatic Load-Side Power Factor Correction System Algorithm and its Economic Benefits in Battery Based Renewable Energy Systems
The low power factor in electrical installations results in high power losses and increased installation costs. This comes as a consequence of the high current flowing through the transmission lines due to high reactive power consumption. Most often, before the installation of renewable energy systems involving battery storage, the load demand is not evaluated in terms of the different load power factors. Because of these diversified power factors for different loads, the overall power factor of the installation will witness a decrease which puts the user at a disadvantage as more charges will be incurred. For these reasons, this paper presents the economic benefits of using an automatic power factor correction system in renewable energy installations. The Arduino microcontroller has been used in the proposal as the main automat. The power factor correction is done by installed capacitor banks connected to the loads automatically using MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) power electronic switches and relay blocks with control signals from the microcontroller. A small system was analyzed involving a water pump, fan, television, and a fluorescent lamp. A targeted corrected power factor of 0.99 was used and the results showed that 430.18 W of power was saved after power factor correction leading to a reduction of 58% line losses. Also, $1300 could be saved by the user on batteries and photovoltaic modules by incorporation the power factor correction system. The proposed correction algorithm was economically beneficial and is therefore strongly recommended to be employed by renewable energy users in particular and the grid-connected individuals in general
Design and Analysis of 2N4416 n channel JFET Single Stage Amplifier for large bandwidth and low Voltage Gain
A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is a current-controlled device, while a field-effect transistor (FET), is a voltage-controlled device, the bipolar transistor has two principal disadvantages. First, it has low input impedance because of the forward-biased emitter junction. Secondly, it has a considerable noise level. The field-effect transistor (FET) has a large input impedance which may be more than 100 megaohms, the FET is generally much less noisy than the ordinary or bipolar transistor. In this paper 2N4416 n channel JFET single-stage amplifier was designed, in order to analyze the circuit, important terms and main parameters were determined, the frequency response and bandwidth of the amplifier were also determined and discussed graphically using Multisim 14.2 simulator, the results characterized amplifier with large bandwidth and low voltage gain
Study of the Spatio-emporal Distribution of Monitoring the Abundance and Diversity of Phytoplancton in Ivoirian Marine Waters using Remote Sensing
In Côte d'Ivoire, knowledge of phytoplankton groups is a crucial issue for the development of economic activities and the prevention of health. It is in this context that was initiated: "study of the Spatio-temporal distribution of the monitoring of the abundance and diversity of phytoplankton in the Ivorian marine waters by remote sensing ». This study showed a great diversity of phytoplankton in the Ivorian marine domain during the years 2009 and 2010. The data used are the concentration of chlorophyll a, the frequency of phytoplankton groups and the distribution of the dominant phytoplankton groups obtained using the MODIS, MERIS, and SeaWiFS sensor. For the processing of these data, the PHYSAT method was used for the identification of phytoplankton groups. The SeaDAS v 7.4 software allowed to process and analyze the data. The spectral anomaly values (Ra) were obtained as well as the spatial distribution of the phytoplankton groups, thus allowing the realization of the maps of spectral anomalies (Ra), and maps of spatial distributions of the phytoplankton groups
Development of the RFID Based Library Management and Anti-Theft System: A Case of East African Community (EAC) Region
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Systems are becoming very useful in our daily life due to their advantages such as reduction of human error, theft prevention, time-consuming reduction, the auto-identification of targeted objects, business processes automation. RFID systems has been applied in the library to manage items and library operations. Different approaches have been adopted in library management systems in the East African region unfortunately some challenges including theft, page removal, non-customer satisfaction, high cost of the used system, are still persisting. To address these challenges, RFID-based library management and the anti-theft system has been developed for the East African Community (EAC) library. It focused on the use of Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band which enables readers and tags to transmit and receive data at a long range. The developed system facilitates users to borrow and return library items using RFID modules and enables librarians to monitor, record library activities and prevent no issued item to cross the library entrance or exit
Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals through the Consumption of Drinking Water from Riruwai Mining Area Kano State, Northern Nigeria
The objective of this research is to study the health risk of heavy metals associated with the consumption of drinking water from the Riruwai mining area Kano State, Northern Nigeria. The test samples were collected from various sources like underground mining area water samples, tap water samples, mining pond water samples, borehole water samples, and well water samples. The concentrations of Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and Zinc (Zn) were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and the measured concentrations of these metals were used to compute human health risk using the United State Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) model. The results of the study indicated that the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn were ranged from 0.005-0.35, 0.001-0.15, 0.01-0.32, ND-0.14, 0.16-0.92, 0.007-0.10, and 2.85-20.03 mg/dm3 respectively. The mean concentrations of all the heavy metals were above the desirable limits recommended by WHO and NSDWQ during both seasons except in well water samples (RGW5) and few locations where the heavy metals were not detected. For non-carcinogenic risk assessment, the HQ values of children were considerably higher than that of the adults in all sampling stations. The HQ values were less than one (HQ > 1) in both adults and children. For carcinogenic risk assessment, the total cancer risk (TCR) of Cr, Hg, Pb, and Zn were within the tolerable limit of less than 1 10-6 in all sampling sites, whereas As and Cd exceeded the tolerable limit in the underground mining site, mining pond and borehole water samples. Children were more vulnerable to cancer and non-cancer risks from heavy metals than adults. High values of cancer and non-cancer risks in children call for more attention to this group of people. The researchers recommended that the water resources of the Riruwai mining area should be continuously monitored for heavy metals especially As, Cd, Cr, and Zn, and preventative measures should be put in place to protect the health of the inhabitants of the study area
Direct and residual fertilizer values of maize (Zea mays L.) stover co-composted with Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray green manure
The present investigation highlights and compares the direct and residual fertilizer values of maize (Zea mays L.) stover composted with Calliandra calothyrsus Meisn and Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray-green manure on maize (Zea mays L.) and successive potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Two field studies were installed with maize and successive potato crops in a completely randomized block design (CRBD) with three replicates. Statistical analyses were performed using R commander, version 4.0.2. Grain yields, root biomass, above ground biomass and calculated parameters (Root/Shoot ratio, Harvest Index and GinningRate) were evaluated for maize. Total potato yields were evaluated and categorized into small size tubers (SST < 35 mm) medium size tubers (MST: 35-65 mm) and big size tubers (BST > 65 mm). Treatments under evaluation were: T1=Control, T2=Farm (cow) manure alone, T3=Maize stover co-composted with Calliandra calothyrsus Meisn green manure; T4= Maize stover co-composted with Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray green manure; T5= Farm (cow) manure+45-60-30; T6= Maize stover co-composted with Calliandra calothyrsus Meisn green manure+45-60-30; T7=Maize stover co-composted with Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray green manure+45-60-30; and T8=Farm (cow) manure+FOMI Imbura+FOMI Totahaza. Obtained results indicated highest maize yields with FOMI organo-mineral fertilizers (2.7 T/ha) seconded by the recommended fertilizer practice T5 (2 T/ha). In the same line, highest R/S value (=0.38) was registered with the same FOMI treatment (T8), while the highest HI value (0.21) was observed with the maize stover co-composted with Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray (T4). Highest potato total yields were observed with the maize stover compost enriched with Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray and supplemented with mineral fertilizer (7.61 T/ha), followed by the same compost without mineral fertilizer addition (6.35 T/ha). We conclude our study with the following statements: i) the highest direct fertilizer value was observed with the FOMI treatment; ii) the residual fertilizer effects were more expressed with the maize stover co-composted with Tithonia diversifolia A. Gray green manure with or without mineral additive, followed by farm manure and maize stover enriched with Calliandra calothyrsus Meisn green manure. Consequently, we restate that the effects of compost-based organo-mineral fertilizers on crop yields should be definitely evaluated on a multiseasonal basis so as to fully capture their residual fertilizer potentials
Development of Mini Smart Library Direction System Incorporated with the Library of Congress Classification System: A case study of East African Libraries
This paper focuses on the development and implementation of a Mini Smart Library Direction System that is integrated with the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) System to facilitate easy book tracing in libraries. A library is a storage building with ample information about books, etc., and their various topics. The LCC system is a method of categorizing books into classes. Technology is evolving and libraries today are becoming more digitized. This, in turn, helps to facilitate easy access to library bookshelves. Nowadays, many libraries have adopted an electronic system that catalogues books, although the process of searching for a book may vary slightly from one library to another. However, the library user needs to search in the library catalogue to identify the needed book and use the call number to find the book on the shelf. In case the library user fails to locate the book, the librarian assists. This manual method has several drawbacks, including time spent walking around in the library searching for the book, and stress experienced throughout the process. According to case studies conducted at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Tanzania, and the University of Juba, South Sudan, it is noted that students are having trouble finding books in libraries. The developed system is based on the Internet of Things, and it connects through Wi-Fi to browse a specific shelf that illuminates based on the user's preferences via a keypad/mobile application (Blynk). It has a web-based user guide manual. The system was tested against the essential characteristics of embedded and IoT systems. As a result, the system is suitable for usage in supermarkets, warehouse stores, and other inventory management applications
Effects of Restoration Techniques on Plant Diversity and Forage Biomass in Areas Invaded by Prosopis juliflora
Prosopis juliflora, an invasive plant worldwide causes major threats by destructing natural ecosystems and limiting the provisioning of ecosystem services in the invaded areas. Attempts to manage the species and restore invaded lands have landed countries to adopt and implement different restoration options. This study tested three restoration options namely Diveting, Mulching and Seeding and their combination to assess their effectiveness in enhancing plant diversity and forage biomass. The study cleared invaded lands in Kahe Ward, Northern Tanzania and laid two blocks, each designated to address livestock pasture and conservation challenges. Experimental blocks were laid in a complete randomized design in 10mx10m plots. Data on plant species and forage biomass were collected in every 10mx10m whereby plants were identified with the support of a botanist; their number recorded, and grass samples green and dry weight determined. The Shannon–Wiener Diversity Index was used to estimate diversity of plant species and the average values in each restoration treatment. One way ANOVA showed that, diversity of native plants was higher in control (Mean±SE =1.239±0.937) than diveting (Mean±SE =1.105±0.56) and diveting-mulching (Mean±SE =0.7703±0.55). Forage biomass was higher in control (Mean±SE =65.917±10.083) than in diveting (Mean±SE =52.425±11.15), diveting-mulching (Mean±SE =42.067±8.751) and diveting-seeding-mulching (Mean±SE =57.625±10.02) implying that restoration interventions have no positive influence on forage biomass. It is recommended that clearing the land and leaving it without restoration is enough because the restoration options do not have a positive influence on plant diversity and forage biomass
