    Effect of Different Weed Management Practices and Wet Seeding Methods on Weed Control, Growth and Yield of Unpuddled Rice (Oryza sativa L.) in Tamirabarani Command Area

    Field experiment was conducted at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam (TNAU) during Late Pishanam (November 2017 – March 2018) to study the various wet seeding methods and weed management practices on growth and yield of unpuddled rice in Tamirabarani command area. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design and replicated thrice with fourteen treatments. Treatments involving seven weed management practices were tested with two methods of wet seeding in rice by drum seeder and paddy cum dhaincha seeder. All the weed control treatments with seeding methods significantly reduced the density of weeds which resulted in significantly higher growth and yield of rice over unweeded control. The results revealed that among the treatments, rice established through drum seeder along with the pre emergence application of pyrazosulfuron ethyl at 20 g a.i ha-1 on 8 DAS followed by POE bispyribac sodium at 25 g a.i ha-1 at 30 DAS not only significantly reduced the density of weeds but also increased the growth and yield of rice

     A study was conducted for two years to isolate the fungal endophytes from different parts of Solanum tuberosum L.(potato) such as leaves, stem, roots and tubers grown in South West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.44 endophytic fungal were isolated including the major phytopathogens of potato such as Alternaria solani, Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii.Out of the total isolates the genus Penicillium recorded the maximum number of species with a total of 13 species followed by Fusarium with a total of 5 species.The fungal endophytes Acremonium cereale, Cladosporium cladosporioides and Nectria ventricosa have been isolated from all the parts of the potato plant throughout the planting season for two years

    Ascites Syndrome: A Challenge for Blooming Poultry Industry

    Ascites syndrome (AS) or Pulmonary Artery Hypertension, a metabolic disorder frequently perceived in broilerchickens, is primarily the upshot of high pressure in the pulmonary artery. It is marked by augmented pulmonaryhypertension, right-ventricle hypertrophy, fluid accumulation in the pericardium and abdominal cavity, increasedhematocrit that results from increased red blood cell production (erythropoiesis), and a slump in arterial blood O2saturation. In fact 1% of mortality from AS leads to considerable economic losses because it occurs toward theconclusion of the growing period and, thereby affecting heavy birds on which a considerable investment of laborand feed have assimilated. As the high metabolic rate is a key component contributing to the susceptibility ofbroilers to Ascites. Some of the feasible nutritional strategies such as early age feed or nutrient restriction(qualitative or quantitative) and light restriction lower the growth rate without compromising the final body weight.Optimization of the house temperature and ventilation in cold weather are beneficial management practices todecrease Ascites incidence. Breeding objectives should aim at locating and eradicating all the AS susceptibleindividuals in the selected population and selecting for high growth rate among the AS resistant ones

    INFLUENCE OF WEED MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON WEED DYNAMICS AND YIELD OF DRUM SEEDED RICE UNDER PUDDLED CONDITION

     Field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Thirupathisaram during Rabi season (November- March) of 2017 - 2018 to evolve suitable weed management practices for drum seeded rice under puddled condition. Among the chemical treatments tried, the application of pretilachlor @ 0.75 kg a.i ha-1on 8 DAS as PE fb bispyribac sodium @ 25 g a.i ha-1on 20 DAS as Eearly Post Emergence (EPoE) recorded significantly lowest total weed density, total dry weight and highest weed control efficiency when compared to other treatments. Higher grain yield (6436 kg ha-1) and straw yield (7210 kg ha-1) was recorded in the application of pretilachlor @ 0.75 kg a. i ha-1on 8 DAS as PE fb bispyribac sodium @ 25 g a.i ha-1on 20 DAS as EPoE apart from weed free check.&nbsp

    UNDERSTANDING THE FARMERS NEEDS WITH REFERENCE TO CROP NUTRITIONAL INPUTS IN DISTRICTS OF TELANGANA

     The focus of Indian agriculture has been changing ever since the introduction of planning era (Deshpande etal.,2004).Because of severe shortage of food grain production, an increased attention was given for augmentingproductivity and production of food grains starting from late sixties till the eighties. In recent years growth of agriculturehas increased remarkably, but this growth was mainly due to increased yield per unit area rather than by expansion ofthe cultivated area. The fastest and most practical route to improved yield is application and extension of existingagricultural technologies. Good soil structure and permanent cover allow the reduction of mechanisation, fuelconsumption and irrigation. Farmers need resources to grow food. They need many different types of resources likenatural resources, such as land, air, nutrients, water and sunlight. Proper nutrition is essential for satisfactory cropgrowth and production. The use of soil tests can help to determine the status of plant available nutrients to developnutrient input recommendations to achieve optimum crop production. The profit potential for farmers depends onproducing enough crop per acre to keep production costs below the selling price. Given the present scenario in farming77 per cent in Wanaparthy 81 per cent in Gadwal and 80 per cent in Mahbubnagar farmers were willing to opt foralternative enterprise for livelihood.Subdivision has an impact on the landholding possessed by the sample farmers. But in Wanaparthy andMahbubnagar, the holding held by sample farmers registered a marginal increase in over the extent of land possessed bypreceding generation. Cent per cent of farmers in selected three districts, were found to have assured source of irrigation.All the farmers in Wanaparthy used power drawn machinery for harvesting, which was not so in Gadwal district andMahbubnagar. Cent per cent of farmers in selected districts were using UREA and DAP. NPK GRADE was used by 77per cent of farmers in Wanaparthy 93 per cent in Gadwaland 20 per cent in Mahbubnagar. The average consumption offertilizers in Wanaparthy was 320 kg , while 530 kg in Gadwal and 450 kg in Mahbubnagar. On an average of 15 tonnesof organic manure per ha was used in Wanaparthy 0.93per cent in Gadwal and 6.9 per cent in Mahbubnagar. Farmerspreference for colour DAP was influenced by quality expectation to extent of 88per cent in Wanaparthy and more areless similar trend was found in other two districts. The awareness of ZNDAP was not uniform among selected districts.The farmers of Mahbubnagar were totally ignorant in the use of ZNDAP. The application of fertilizers by farmers wasinfluenced by their own self-assessment followed by dealer’s advice in Wanaparthy while in Gadwal and Mahbubnagarfarmers own experience was most powerful factor. Undoubtedly price and quality were major factors in deciding thegrade of fertilizer in all the districts. In respect to micronutrient usage in the form of zinc was used by 55 per cent inWanaparthy, 68 per cent in Gadwal, 60 per cent in Mahbubnagar. Farmers in general in selected districts were notsatisfied with facilities available for soil testing if they are made available. The facilities that the farmers required weretechnical literature, field demos, farmer meetings etc in Wanaparthy district. Field demos, farmer meetings, soil testing inMahbubnagar and Gadwal district. The constraints that the farmers encountered in farming were weather/inadequaterains/drought as lamented by all the farmers in three districts. Other constraints were non availability of labour inWanaparthy and Gadwal and lack of technical support in Mahbubnagar. Yet other constraints were indebtedness, lowerreturns, and non-availability of inputs

The study investigates the analysis of price variation in the selected markets of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka through co-efficient of variance. The data analyses the price of ragi over the years 2003 and 2017 and calculated in series of monthly basis and yearly basis. The study investigates the price details, market integration of ragi in selected markets of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The results indicated a positive secular trend from the year 2003 - 2017 and due to larger arrivals, the price reduced in certain periods that may vary upon the market area. In month wise analysis of Co-efficient of variation, except Vellore market others has the highest variability during harvest period. &nbsp

    A Study on Socio Economic Status on Nutritional Status among College Students

    The present study was undertaken to assess the effect of socio economic status on nutritionalstatus of college girls (18-21 years) of East Khasi hills district of Meghalaya. A total number of 150 collegegirls from different college were selected. The study was undertaken with following objective in order toassess the nutritional status and to find out the eating pattern of the selected respondent. The present studythe would also help to assess the impact of socio economic status on the nutritional status of the selectedareas by recording anthropometric measurements and by determining the food and nutrient intake . Theinterview schedule was including which leads to the fulfilment of the objectives of the study. The interviewschedule was enclosed with general profile of the respondents including name, sex, age, education,occupation and family income for knowing the respondents socio-economic status. The anthropometricmeasurement of the respondents i.e. height (in cm) and weight i(n kg )were taken. Dietary intake wasdetermined by 24 hours dietary recall method and the average nutrient intake was calculated and comparedwith RDA (ICMR). The average dietary intake of all nutrients by the respondents was less by RecommendedDietary Allowance (RDA) except energy, calcium and vitamin A which was found to be satisfactory basedon the results. The results of the study showed that majority of the selected adolescent girls were belongingto Upper Middle Class. The mean values of BMI revealed that a large proportion (90.67%) of college girlswere normal (BMI 18.5-25). The prevalence of underweight were only (4%) based on BMI and overweightwere( 5.33% ).None of the college girls were found to be obese. Maximum (95.94) per cent of college girlsbelonging to upper middle class were having the BMI <18.5-25 followed by lower middle class, upper class,upper lower class and lower class.     In the investigated area, corn silage and hay meadows are dominated by voluminous fodder. Farmerswho grew alfalfa were not satisfied with the yield and length of use, as this was mainly used for 2 years. Thereason for such a short use of alfalfa is probably the acidity of the soil in which it was grown.On the contrary, farmers who grew red clover were more satisfied with the production and were mostly used forthree years.In the area of Northeast Bosnia, the agro-technology of cultivation of the red clover is based on sowing in thespring (April), fertilization of NPK 15:15:15 and sowing manually according to the milk producer’s survey on thecultivation of fodder crops and the applied agro-technology.Red clover could be classified in the second place after the quality of the fodder, behind the alfalfa. The share ofnumber of stems in the yield of red clovers is a very important factor of yield and quality.The goal of the research was to determine the extent to which the change in the red clover cultivation system(sowing time, intermediate sowing distance and the application of different quantities and combinations of NPKfertilizers) influences the proportion of number of stems in the yield of red clover feed.The results of the research can provide a significant scientific and practical contribution to the improvement ofthe red clover cultivation in the agro-ecological conditions of northeastern Bosnia, as a very importantcomponent in ensuring quality of livestock feed.This research will provide an answer to the question of choosing agro-technics and fertilization systems in orderto produce better quality of red clover of whose main factor is the share number of stem in the yield, as well asachieving higher yields per unit are

    Evaluation of Antifungal Activity of Litsea cubeba Plant Extract and Essential Oil against Phytopathogenic Fungi Botryodiplodia theobromae

     Phytopathogenic fungi Botryodiplodia theobromae causes diseases such as dieback, blights, androot rot in a variety of different hosts in tropical and subtropical regions and itinclude guava, coconut, papaya and grapevine plants. It also cause stem end rot disease in mango fruits. Anumber of angiospermic taxa were evaluated for their antifungal activity. Among the selected plantsessential oil of L. cubeba was found effective in controlling the growth of Botryodiplodia theobromae. Theminimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the essential oil was recorded 100ppm. The oil was found towithstand high inoculums density. Plant extract were prepared in water, acetone, ethyl alcohol, petroleumether, ethyl acetate and methanol. Plant extracts of Allamanda cathartica, Lawsonia inermis, Prunuspersica and L. cubeba showed inhibitory effect on the B. theobromae. However, Leaf extract of L cubebain all the solvent namely, water, acetone, ethyl alcohol, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol werefound to have antifungal activity. The extract as well as oil of L. cubeba was also found fungi toxic againstother fruit rotting fungi. An enhancement in the shelf life of mango fruits was recorded under in vivo trialafter treating with aqueous extract and essential oil of L. cubeba
