    A COMMUNITY BASED STUDY ON PREVALENCE OF OBESITY AND ITS RELATION WITH DIABETES AMONG ADULTS OF ALLAHABAD

    The present study entitled “A community based study on prevalence of obesity and its associationwith diabetes among adults of Allahabad” aimed to find out the prevalence rate of the obesity among theselected adults, to access the nutritional status of the selected respondents, to determine relation of obesitywith diabetes was carried out in the five areas of Allahabad. A total of one hundred and fifty male andfemale sedentary respondents were randomly selected from Muthiganj, Gaughat, Arail, Mahewa, Kitganjfor the study and were personally interviewed with the help of preset schedule. The anthropometricmeasurements (Height, Weight, BMI) and biochemical test like blood glucose level that is both fasting andpost prandial using finger prick method (Urooj and Puttaraj,2000) was taken. Dietary intake (24 hoursdietary recall method) was recorded and calculated using food composition table compared with RDA(ICMR, 2010). After observation, it was found that 62 percent respondents were using their own vehicle,calorie consumption was high and fibre intake was less as compared to RDA, 53.33 percent respondentswere not doing any exercise, the prevalence rate of obesity (BMI ≥25) was 57.33 percent, 86 male andfemale respondents were found to be obese out of which 43.2 percent of the respondents were diabetic(≥140 mg/dl). All respondents were having sedentary lifestyle. Hence we can conclude that obesity is themajor cause of diabetes

    EFFECT OF IPNS AND FOLIAR NUTRITION ON NUTRIENT UPTAKE OF CORIANDER AND FERTILITY STATUS OF ALFISOLS IN TAMIRABARANI COMMAND AREA

    A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam, during Rabi season 2017-18 to study the effect of IPNS and foliar nutrition on yield and quality of coriander and its impact on the properties of Alfisols of Tamirabarani command area. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with thirteen treatments and three replications. The treatments consists of absolute control (T1), STCR-IPNS alone (T2), FYM on 100 percent N equivalent basis alone (T3), along with T2, T3 foliar spray of amino acids, micronutrients, moringa and aloevera leaf extract alone and also in combinations. The treatment that received FYM + foliar spray of amino acids, micronutrients, moringa and aloe vera leaf extracts (T13) recorded higher uptake of nitrogen (14.89 kg ha-1 in seed and 16.04 kg ha-1 in stover), phosphorus (3.72 kg ha-1 in seed and 4.07 kg ha-1 in stover) and potassium (16.72 kg ha-1 in seed and 23.10 kg ha-1 in stover) in coriander at post harvest stage. The soil  fertility status as evidenced by available nitrogen (177 kg ha-1), available phosphorus (15.4 kg ha-1) and available potassium (279 kg ha-1)at post harvest stage was higher in the treatment that received STCR-IPNS + foliar spray of amino acids, micronutrients, moringa and aloe vera leaf extracts (T12).&nbsp

    Farinograph as a Rheological Tool to Predict the Quality Characteristics for Blend of Wheat with Pulse Flour

    Wheat is one of the most widely grown food grain crop in the world. Durum and bread wheat (Triticum durum andT. aestivum) constitute the base for human food. The Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var durum) has the highgrain quality and it is the main source of semolina for the production of pasta, couscous, and grain for burgher.Although production of wheat has not been sufficient to meet the increasing demand to satisfy human needs.Recently, new efforts have been systematically undertaken to replace part of the wheat flour by other sources.Legumes are a rich source of protein and contain approximately three times more proteins than cereals and high inlysine. The grain quality is important for processing of these end products, particularly the protein content and thegluten strength. For this reason, the rheological characterization of wheat flour dough is essential in bakery industry.Traditional dough testing instruments such as Farinograph, Mixograph, Alveograph, Extensograph,Mixograph,Amylograph, Maturograph, etc., have become important tests to asses and predict the quality of the finished bakeryproducts. The Farinograph test is the importance of requirements of the industry and export markets. It measures thedough properties by measuring the resistance of dough against the mixing action of paddles (blades).It is generallyused to determine water absorption required to make dough, to evaluate the effects of ingredients on mixingproperties and to check blending requirement for dough development, tolerance to over mixing and doughconsistency during production. In addition farinograph used to predict product texture characteristics. Therefore thepresent investigation was carried out to prepared the pulse flour blend [pea flour and lentil flour were mixed at1:1ratio] and this blend was replaced with durum semolina for 15%, 30% and 45% to assess the pasta quality byfarinograph. The result showed that 15% of pulse flour blend had dough water absorption (60.3%) and stability time(2.6min) were high and tolerance index was lower (62.6FU) than 30% and 45% of pulse flour blend replaced withwheat flour. These finding suggested that 15% of pulse flour blend had relative to dough properties of durumsemolina (control) which was suitable for good quality of pasta and other bakery products

    Water and Land Management Institutes across country had a very specific mandate tocater the needs of the specific target group like land and water managers, irrigation engineers,civil engineers, water management specialists, agriculture specialists, gender and socialdevelopment experts, professionals, para – professionals, community leaders, water users andfarmers. Over time the WALMIs in different states took larger responsibilities and widened theirnetwork, venturing in natural resources development and management, community basedinstitution development and management, monitoring, evaluation, learning and documentation inthe cross sectoral setting. The WALMI, Bhopal in its recent past have been at the fulcrum of thetraining and institution development in the state of Madhya Pradesh. WALMI, Bhopal being oneof the key training institutions aspire to evolve a broad framework of quality management in thetraining and development, with the sole objective of setting benchmark standards for state leveltraining institutions, it conducted a National Workshop at Bhopal. The present paper outlines thepurpose, process and products that may suit the current and future requirements of the statelevel training institutions in the state and elsewhere. The workshop proceedings led to theinternal churning and ignited the process of coining the benchmark standards for academicqualities, enabling infrastructures, standard operating processes to conduct and manage thetrainings and forging the inter – institutional linkages in the current and future institutional eco– system. The paper also provides the opportunities for the readers and professionals interestedin training and capacity building of the human resources at various levels to contribute andenrich the process of adopting and adapting to the new benchmarking system and benchmarkstandards. It provides an opportunity to provide the best practices evolved over time andmainstream the key learning by converting the best practices in to indicators. The paper alsohighlights the critical gaps and underlines the information requirement to satisfy the necessaryand sufficient conditions for effective measurement and monitoring framework for qualitymanagement at such training institutions.&nbsp

    ASSESSMENT OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND DIETARY PATTERN OF PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM NEPHROLITHIASIS IN DIFFERENT REGION OF PRAYAGRAJ DISTRICTS, UTTAR PRADESH

    Changes in dietary pattern and sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of kidneystone that cause permanent damage to the kidney if not treated properly .The deposition ofminerals in the kidney due to its imbalanced metabolism can led to the formation of stones inkidney, these stones vary in size and shape that can be as small as a grain of sand or as largeas a pea. Whereas some stones are as big as golf balls, these can be smooth or irregular attimes and are usually yellow or brown in colour. The objective of the study is to assess the foodhabits and daily nutrient intake of nephrolithiasis patients to assess the change in physicalactivity and the perceived dietary changes occurred in nephrolithiasis patients. Total 30subjects from different areas were enrolled by random sampling from Allahabad district.Anthropometric measurements were taken for calculating BMI. Dietary intake and physicalactivity levels were collected by interviewing the subjects using a validated questionnaire.Mean test was applied for deducting the relevant results. The results indicate that majority ofpatients had excess body weight and BMI. Presence of family history of nephrolithiasis was30%. The mean Sodium and animal Protein intake was higher than the RDA, (< 50 mmol/day)and (< 52 g/day). There was excess consumption of Fat and CHO. Calcium consumption wasalso deficit respectively. Sedentary lifestyle was seen in majority of women. The alarming factwas the consumption of animal protein-dense diet, high sodium intake, low in unrefined CHO,and deficit Calcium intake contributed to metabolism disorder that leds to nephrolithiasis.Lifestyle was sedentary among the few patients; hence, the emphasis is on moderate physicalactivity levels that accelerates the excessive sweating which causes crystallization of uric acidand calcium oxalate

    Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on Growth Parameters of Baby Corn (Zea mays L.)

    The present investigation entitled “Effect of integrated nutrient management ongrowth parameters of baby corn (Zea mays L.)” was carried out during Kharif season 2015 atthe Instructional Dairy Farm (IDF), Nagla, Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agricultureand Technology, Pantnagar, Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, India. The experimentaldesign was Randomized Block Design with 11 treatments consisting of sole application ofNPK fertilizer, sole application of Azotobacter and Azospirillum, and application ofAzotobacter and Azospirillum along with NPK fertilizer. It was found that field emergencepercent did not differ significantly with different integrated nutrient management practices,however significantly higher plant population was recorded at application of 100%NPK+Azot+Azos followed by 75% NPK+Azot+Azos though both were non-significant.Similarly tallest plants were recorded with application of 100% NPK+Azot+Azos followed by75% NPK+Azot+Azos at 25 DAS as well as at harvest stage. Integrated nutrient managementpractices had significant effect on dry matter production too at all growth stages. Applicationof 75% NPK+Azot+Azos produced significantly higher dry matter at 25 DAS, however at 50DAS and harvesting stage, significantly higher dry matter production was recorded withapplication of 100% NPK+Azot+Azos. Also the dry matter accumulation in baby corn, greenfodder and total was affected significantly by different integrated nutrient managementpractices with value of each one being highest under application of 100% NPK+Azot+Azos.The study concluded the importance of integrated nutrient management practice for bettergrowth and development of baby corn as higher dose of nitrogen coupled with biofertilizers,being an integrated nutrient application treatment, improved the plant growth and plantpopulation leading to higher dry matter accumulation

    NUTRITIONAL AND ORGANOLEPTIC EVALUATION OF VALUE ADDED PRODUCTS MADE BY INCORPORATING FRESH CABBAGE OUTER LEAVES AND STEMS

    Green leafy vegetables are used since ancient periods as a source of food as they contain many nutrients and minerals which are helpful in maintaining human health. Cabbage (Brassica oleracea or B. oleracea var Capitata, var. tuba) is a member of the genus Brassica and the mustard family, Brassicaceae. Several other cruciferous vegetables (sometimes known as colecrops) are considered cultivars of B.oleracea, including broccoli, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi and sprouting broccoli. We only use upper portions of the leaves and throw away the remaining parts of the leaves like stems and roots. These stems, peels and roots are known as kitchen waste. We can incorporate these to develop value added products. Cabbage stems and outer leaves were washed and blanched. Fresh cabbage outer leaves and stems were added at 10, 20 and 25g into the Parantha and mathri. All the samples were subjected to sensory and physiochemical evaluation.&nbsp

    PROMOTING THE EMERGENCE ROOTS OF "SEWI" DATE PALM IN VITRO

    Plant tissue culture technique has proven as a quick and sustainable way to provide large-scale propagation of true-to-type date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) plants. Rooting is the final culture stage for transffered to greenhouse acclimatization which is the prime concept of micro propagation system. A good rooting system is the prerequisite for survival of ex vitro grown plantlets in the open field which responsible to absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The present work discussed the effectiveness of culture media components (¼ , ½ , ¾ and full strength of both Murashige & Skoog (MS) and Schenk & Hildebrandt (SH) medium) and some plant growth regulators as Indole butyric acid (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 mg l-1IBA), Triacontanol at 0, 5, 10, 20 μg l-1 TRIA and combination of the best concentration of TRIA with Gibberellic acid (GA3) at 0, 0.5 and 1.0 mg l-1 and control treatment  (free TRIA and GA3) on rooting of date palm cv. Sewi in vitro. Finally, the rooted plantlets which produced from all treatments in the last experiment (TRIA and GA3 combinations) were transferred separately to greenhouse and planted in plastic pots filled with peat moss+vermiculite+perlite 2:l:l (v/v/v) to determine the survival percentage. The results showed that the root number and length were significantly affected by MS and SH medium salts strength. Referring to MS medium, The highest number and length of root (3 roots and 8 cm) were obtained with quarter salts strength MS medium. In case of SH medium, The highest number and length of root (4.5 roots and 6 cm) were obtained with full strength SH medium. Also the results showed that the root number and length were significantly affected by IBA, TRIA and the combination between TRIA & GA3. In case of IBA, the highest number and length of root (6 roots and 8 cm) were obtained at 1.0 mg l−1 IBA. Whereas in case of TRIA, the highest numbers and length of root (20 roots and 5 cm) were obtained at 5 μg l−1 TRIA. Finally, the highest number and length of root (27 roots and 6.4 cm) and the highest shoot length (17.3 cm) were obtained at 5μg l−1 TRIA+1.0 mg l−1 GA3. In acclimatization stage, the best survival percentage (90%) after three months was obtained with the use of TRIA at 5   10  μg l−1 in combination with GA3 at 1.0 mg l−1 in compare with the control whereas survival percentage was (50%).  &nbsp

    Influence of Liming on Yield of Rice and Soil Properties in Acidic Soils of High Rainfall Zone

    Soil acidity is an important agricultural problem while evaluating the production potential of most of the crops. A field experiment was conducted in farmers field at Gananadhasapuram village of Thovalai taluk (strongly acidic soil) and Andarkulam village of Agastheswaram taluk (moderately acidic soil) during Pishanam (Oct-Feb) and late Pishanam (Nov–Mar) season of 2017-2018 respectively, in the high rainfall zone to study the effect of different source and levels of lime on yield of rice and soil properties. Liming materials viz., dolomite and calcite were tried at different levels along with recommended fertilizers + ZnSO4. The experiment was conducted in RBD. The results of the experiment revealed that significantly higher grain (7.09 and 7.40 t ha-1) and straw (10.3 and 10.5 t ha-1) yield of rice were recorded with the application of dolomite @ 0.75 LR (6.36 t ha-1) (T7) and @ 0.50 LR (1.6 t ha-1) (T5) respectively in the strongly and moderately acidic soils along with recommended dose of fertilizers during pishanam and late pishanam seasons. The soil pH, EC, available NPK, exchangeable Ca, Mg and DTPA extractable Zn, Cu were increased and the DTPA extractable Fe and Mn were decreased upon lime application irrespective of the sources. The economics of various treatments revealed that, the highest B:C ratio (1.86 and 2.56) was recorded with the application of dolomite @ 0.75 LR (6.36 t ha1) (T7) and @ 0.50 LR (1.6 t ha-1) (T5) along with recommended dose of fertilizers in the strongly and moderately acidic soils respectively during pishanam and late pishanam seasons. The study clearly indicated that in strongly acidic soils, the application of dolomite @ 0.75 LR (6.36 t ha-1) (T7) and in moderately acidic soils, dolomite @ 0.50 LR (1.6 t ha-1) (T5) along with recommended dose of fertilizers and ZnSO4 is found to be the best for getting higher yield and higher returns per rupee invested under rice cultivation. &nbsp

    Economics of Herbicides against Weeds of Black Gram (Vigna mungo (L). Hepper) Under Irrigated Condition

    Field experiment was conducted at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam during Purattasipattam (September 2017 – November 2017) to evaluate the economics of herbicides against weeds of black gram under irrigated condition. Twelve treatments were tested in randomized block design with three replications. Among the weed control treatments, PE application of oxyfluorfen @ 0.18 kg a.i ha-1 + EPOE application of Imazethapyr @ 0.05 kg a.i ha-1 on 20 DAS recorded significantly lower total weed density (22.92 m2) and higher weed control efficiency (93.2 %) than rest of the treatments including weedy check. The significantly higher grain (743 kg ha-1) and haulm (2380 kg ha-1) yield was recorded in weed free plot over all the treatments, which was followed by PE application of oxyfluorfen @ 0.18 kg a.i ha-1 + EPOE application of Imazethapyr @ 0.05 kg a.i ha-1 on 20 DAS (722 and 2314 kg ha-1). However, the maximum net return of Rs.28832 ha-1 and B:C ratio (2.26) was found with PE application of oxyfluorfen @ 0.18 kg a.i ha-1 + EPOE application of Imazethapyr @ 0.05 kg a.i ha-1 on 20 DAS followed by PE application of pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg a.i ha-1 + EPOE Imazethapyr @ 0.05 kg a.i  ha-1 on 20 DAS (Rs.27210 ha-1 and 2.18).&nbsp
