The paper discusses lifelong learning as a research topic in European journals through three research questions concerning its prevalence, the subjects of lifelong learning and lifelong education–related papers, and the type of research. To address these questions, we conducted a systematic literature review. We established a precise procedure for data collection and employed a coding strategy for categorizing research subjects. The analysis encompassed articles published in European journals from 2019 to 2024 — a total of 326 publications released across 125 European journals. For data collection, we used content analysis techniques and applied a structured protocol for content analysis as an instrument. We present the results in terms of frequencies and percentages. We found that authors from Europe and America most commonly discuss the subject of lifelong learning in European journals, that the majority of the research is focused on questions related to LLL policies, and that most of the papers are theoretical.

Face-To-Face vs. Online Communication from the Perspective of “Digital Youth”: Insights from Serbian Young Adolescents

    No full text
Research into young people's use of social network sites reveals that social interaction is the primary motivator, as they rely on these platforms to stay connected and communicate with others. A study on Serbian high school students suggests that online communication, primarily texting, can enhance social interaction and connectivity more effectively than face-to-face communication, especially in sustaining existing relationships. Nevertheless, communicating face-to-face remains the primary mode for establishing new social connections. This research aims to contribute to understanding how young people compare online and face-to-face communication in the context of social interactions, emphasizing their perceived advantages and disadvantages. A key objective is to contribute to this field by specifically including younger adolescents as participants in the study. Data was collected through four focus group interviews, each consisting of 5 to 7 seventh-grade students from four elementary schools in Belgrade (a total of 24 participants). Every group comprised both boys and girls, and sessions were held in person, lasting between 50 and 86 minutes. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis, where codes were derived through a combined approach: inductively, from participants’ responses, and deductively, based on previous research on Serbian high school students. We identified three themes highlighting the advantages of face-to-face communication: (1) better understanding, (2) honesty and trust, and (3) nonverbal cues important for the expression and recognition of emotions. In line with findings from research with high school students, participants emphasized the effectiveness of online texting via social network sites in staying connected with friends they rarely see in person. Another significant theme that emerged is the observation of inconsistencies in a person’s behavior and even personality, depending on whether they are communicating in person or texting online. To conclude, the young adolescents who participated in our research emphasize the importance of clear and honest communication that allows them to understand how their conversation partners feel, and they choose face-to-face conversation as the best way to accomplish that. An illustrative example of compromising between these “two worlds” is their preference for voice messages when they wish to discuss important topics but cannot meet their conversation partner in person31. međunarodni naučni skup Empirijska istraživanja u psihologiji 28–30. mart 2025., saopštenja štampana u izvod

The Care of Serbian Medieval Rulers and High Church Dignitaries for Monastery Vineyards

Serbian medieval rulers and high church dignitaries acquired vineyards for newly established or restored monasteries, primarily in the vicinity of the temple but also further afield. Vineyards were acquired mainly by forming new and expanding existing plantations, as well as by purchasing vineyard plots or land where grapevines were to be planted. The vineyards of the Athonite monasteries of Vatopedi and Hilandar were cared for by monks Sava and Simeon at the end of the 12th century. During the 13th and the first half of the 14th century, the vineyards of Hilandar were tended by Byzantine emperors, King Milutin, Hilandar abbots, and certain hieromonks. The same can be observed in the case of the Monastery of St. George near Skopje, restored by King Milutin (1300), the Monastery of Žiča and the Peć Archbishopric/Patriarchate, whose vineyards were cared for by Archbishop Danilo II (1324–1337) and the Bishop of Peć, Marko (1411), as well as the Monastery of Ravanica, the endowment of Prince Lazar (1381). One of the first vineyards of the Monastery of St. Archangels near Prizren was planted thanks to Abbot Jacob (1343). The care of vineyards could also be associated with the personal needs of the benefactor to reside in the monastery, as in the case of Archbishop Sava Nemanjić and the Karyes Cell (1217–1219, 1229). Significant monasteries such as St. George near Skopje and St. Archangels near Prizren, located near developed urban settlements, were gifted vineyards in the closest proximity to the city. Vineyards were either purchased from citizens or acquired through the exchange of properties, undertaken at the initiative of rulers and with the owners' consent, often to create a consolidated vineyard complex. King Stefan Dečanski carried out the exchange of vineyards for the Dečani Monastery (1331), Emperor Dušan for the Monastery of St. Archangels near Prizren (1343–1349/50), and Lord of Zeta Ivan Crnojević for the newly built Monastery of St. Mary in Cetinje (1485). In performing the exchange of vineyards for the Monastery of St. Archangels, Emperor Dušan also consolidated vineyard land in one of the stretches of the urban metoch of Prizren (a land belt in the immediate vicinity of the city). The city towers where the wine of wealthier monasteries was stored could also be acquired through the exchange of properties, as in the case of the Višegrad fortress near Prizren for the Monastery of St. Archangels

Conceptualization of hope among adolescents and youth from refugee backgrounds in a transit context

    No full text
There is a growing need to understand the protective factors that promote positive psychological functioning in adolescents and youth from refugee backgrounds (AYRB). Even though hope is a valuable resource in coping with adversity, no study has examined hope in AYRB in a transiting country. These individuals face additional challenges, such as exposure to threats to their physical and psychological safety, risks from human traffickers, limited access to medical and social support, and inadequate integration procedures. Thus, this study aims to explore the conceptualization of hope among AYRBs in transit, its function, and sources of hope throughout their transiting journey. A total of 11 semi-structured interviews were conducted with AYRB currently residing in Serbia, a transiting country (M age = 19.18, SD age = 2.82, 3 females). Relying on a coding reliability approach to thematic analysis, four main themes were extracted: Nature of Hope; The Interplay of Hope and Goals; Function of Hope; and Maintaining Hope. This study provides in-depth insights into conceptualization, perceived functions, and sources of hope among AYRB, contributing to promoting their strengths and destigmatizing narratives. Furthermore, it contributed to hope theory by revealing additional functions of hope in vulnerable populations with refugee backgrounds. The study provides guidance for professionals working with AYRB in transit, emphasizing a hope-based approach, including techniques such as adjusting communication, preventing false hope, diversifying hope sources, and enhancing hope’s consolatory and motivational functions. The findings highlight the need for a comprehensive support model in transit countries’ practices and policies to provide essential care globally

Different angles on the same phenomenon: Clientelism through calculation, moral obligation, and habitus

This paper presents and analyses three dominant approaches that shape contemporary research on clientelism: the economic exchange approach, where all involved actors (clients, patrons, or brokers) rationally assess gains and losses; the moral economy perspective, emphasizing moral obligation and reciprocity; and the sociocultural conception grounded in the idea of clientelist habitus. Research following one of these theoretical positions often treats the others as rivals, leading to methodological and normative divisions. This paper argues that the very nature of clientelism, embodied in informal delayed exchange, allows for the integration of these theoretical perspectives. We argue that its architecture comprises interests and strategies, as well as affects, dispositions, and habits. We acknowledge the instrumentalist perspective’s assumption that individuals or groups engaging in clientelist exchanges are aware of their interests, capable of weighing inputs and outcomes and considering alternatives. Simultaneously, we recognize the shared view of normative and sociocultural approaches that transactions do not occur in a vacuum or a purely economic calculus but within a community imposing specific obligations and expectations, thus ensuring the stability and longevity of clientelist relationships. Finally, we advocate for a critical and reflective integration of these approaches

Physical Laws and Initial Cosmological Conditions: Philosophical and Theoretical Perspectives

A preliminary formulation and exploration of philosophical and scientific challenges in understanding the origin and evolution of the universe is offered, focusing on understanding the initial conditions of the physical universe before and after the development of the Big Bang theory. Whether the initial conditions are defined by existing or any scientific laws, or are inherently contingent, is a question that determines the framework in which cosmological assumptions and models are formulated. The quantum description of the initial conditions is treated either as a satisfactory solution or as an unsupported assumption. The dispute over the Copernican principle (homogeneity and isotropy of the universe) also lead to different conclusions both about the nature of the initial conditions and to different alternatives to the Big Bang model, both before and after the discovery of the key evidence for that model. The central theme of the work concerns ontological and epistemological ramifications of the relationship between assumed principles in cosmological models on the one hand, and evidence on the other, as well as the role of this relationship in shaping cosmological frameworks.Međunarodni naučni skup „Nauka, filozofija nauke i naučna metodologija“, održanog 27. i 28. septembra 2024. godine u Podgorici i Nikšiću, organizovan od strane Filozofskog fakulteta Univerziteta Crne Gore Predavanje po pozivu sa međunarodnog skupa štampano u celini

Establishment of the Volunteer Corps in Russia in 1916 and the Question of Replenishment of the Serbian Army in the First World War

This dataset was collected as part of the project "The Wave of Student Revolt in Serbia: University Blockades 2024–2025", conducted by the Institute of Sociological Research, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. The student protest in Serbia, which defined the winter of 2024 and the spring of 2025, began with faculty blockades in late 2024. The catalyst for this socio-political crisis was a tragic incident on November 1, 2024, when sixteen citizens lost their lives—just a few months after the ceremonial reopening of the renovated station. The event sparked immediate protests by opposition groups and members of the public. The dataset consists of photographs of student protest banners, gathered through field visits to university faculties during the student blockades. The population of banners was highly dynamic, with new ones appearing and older ones being removed or destroyed throughout the data collection period. The dataset thus captures the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of student protest expression during this period. Photographic data was collected between December 2024 and February 2025 at 35 faculties across 5 universities in Serbia: University of Belgrade: Faculty of Philosophy, School of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Philology, Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Economics University of Arts in Belgrade: Faculty of Music, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Applied Arts, Faculty of Dramatic Arts University of Niš: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Medicine University of Novi Sad: Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Academy of Arts University of Kragujevac: Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Philology and Arts, Faculty of Medical Sciences The dataset includes 929 photographs documenting various student protest-related materials. Baza podataka stoga osvetljava vremensku i prostornu raznolikost u načinu izražavanja studentskog protesta u ovom periodu. Fotografski materijal prikupljan je od decembra 2024. do februara 2025. godine na 35 fakulteta u okviru 5 univerziteta u Srbiji: Univerzitet u Beogradu: Filozofski fakultet, Elektrotehnički fakultet, Građevinski fakultet, Arhitektonski fakultet, Mašinski fakultet, Pravni fakultet, Fakultet za specijalnu edukaciju i rehabilitaciju, Filološki fakultet, Fizički fakultet, Hemijski fakultet, Matematički fakultet, Fakultet veterinarske medicine, Medicinski fakultet, Stomatološki fakultet, Ekonomski fakultet Univerzitet umetnosti u Beogradu: Fakultet muzičke umetnosti, Fakultet likovnih umetnosti, Fakultet primenjenih umetnosti, Fakultet dramskih umetnosti Univerzitet u Nišu: Pravni fakultet, Ekonomski fakultet, Filozofski fakultet, Medicinski fakultet Univerzitet u Novom Sadu: Filozofski fakultet, Prirodno-matematički fakultet, Poljoprivredni fakultet, Pravni fakultet, Fakultet tehničkih nauka, Akademija umetnosti Univerzitet u Kragujevcu: Ekonomski fakultet, Fakultet inženjerskih nauka, Prirodno-matematički fakultet, Pravni fakultet, Fakultet filoloških i umetničkih nauka, Fakultet medicinskih nauka Baza podataka obuhvata 929 fotografija koje dokumentuju različite materijale povezane sa protestima.Markovic, A., Zvijer, N., & Radoman, M. Youth at a Crossroads: Challenges of Growing Up in Serbia

    No full text
In Serbia, 1.1 million young people between the ages of 15 and 30 make up approximately 17% of the total population. These young individuals face the challenges of growing up in a world full of uncertainty, compounded by specific issues arising from the country’s transition between collectivist and neoliberal values. This social and political context presents additional difficulties in key areas such as education, employment, health, security, and social participation. The education system in Serbia is not aligned with labor market needs, leading many young people to work in jobs for which they were not trained. At the same time, they face housing shortages and delayed family formation. Furthermore, youth from vulnerable and marginalized groups are at a higher risk of poverty and social exclusion, a trend that became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although today’s young people—often referred to as digital natives – have grown up with ICT technologies, they also encounter new forms of digital inequality that can reinforce existing social disparities. The current challenges facing youth in Serbia relate to quality of life, mental health, safety, and the balance between social, consumer, and productive activities during their free time—activities that should support their development. Data indicates that young people in Serbia view their personal future more optimistically than the future of the country, which may suggest both a desire for migration and a capacity for adaptation. Finally, this paper highlights the gap between empirical data suggesting youth passivity and their active participation in protests and blockades across Serbia during the winter of 2024/25
