    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The bioclimatic analysis of the central area of the city of Nis conducted in this paper is based on the use of the bioclimatic index Humidex, which represents subjective outdoor temperature that one feels in warm and humid environment. The purpose of this research is to observe the index change on a daily basis during the hottest part of the year (June, July, and August) over the period from 1998 to 2017. For the purposes of this analysis, hourly (7:00, 14:00), maximum and mean daily values of meteorological parameters (air temperature and relative humidity) were used, for the period of 20 years (1998-2017), which were measured at Nis weather station (43 degrees 19'N, 21 degrees 53'E, at an altitude of 202 meters). The findings indicate a gradual change in the bioclimatic characteristics of this area during this period, especially over the last decade. After 2007 there has been a decrease in the total number of the days described as "comfortable". However, there has been an increase in the index values in all the other heat stress categories characterized by a higher or lower degree of thermal discomfort. The years 1998, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2016, 2015, and 2017 stand out as adverse years

Analysis of Existing Disaster Risk Reduction Programs and Enhancement of Capacity Development for Health Risks from Floods in Western Balkan

    No full text
Natural hazards are a result of changing climate and environmental conditions and, as such, they are inevitable. However, the scale of the negative outcomes of these natural hazards can be significantly reduced through management and adequate preparation. Therefore, integration of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) policies and programs with risk management is necessary in order to reduce the impact of disastrous situations, and Capacity Development is the catalyst for the successful implementation of such programs. This paper presents an analysis of international frameworks for risk reduction such as the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), the Sendai Framework, the South Eastern Europe Disaster Risk Mitigation and Adaptation Programme (SEEDRMAP), as well as few individual national programs within the Western Balkan countries. After analyzing the aforementioned programs and policies, special emphasis has been given to the need for capacity development for human health factors in regards to flooding (the most frequent natural hazard in the region). The revision showed poorly addressed human health effects (physical and mental) caused directly or indirectly by floods in the region. Therefore, the paper presents several recommendations which could foster implementation of prerequisites for those absent policies and programs for human health, with final aim to contribute to healthier solutions during the aftermath of flooding for people in the Western Balkan area

The birth incentive strategy envisages broad activation of local self-government in the field of childbearing to meet the specific needs of the local population. In this sense, this article aims to present the situation in the field of fertility of the population and the potential area of operation for the socioeconomic indicators of the population and the local environment in the case of nine cities in Serbia at the local public policy makers. Nine selected cities with between 100 and 150 thousand inhabitants can represent a significant "incubator" of birth rehabilitation in Serbia, with relatively even spatial distribution. Analysis and comparison of socioeconomic indicators in selected cities will identify those spheres of life that can be operated in order to create favorable conditions for childbirth.

    Get PDF
Renewable energy sources (RES) have increasingly been used worldwide with the aim of im-plementing sustainable development and reducing the environmental impact of harmful gases. The most significant potential of all types of RES is attributed to solar energy. The paper presents the analysis of natural and energy potentials for the construction of solar power plants in the territory of the municipality of Vranje. The following natural factors were processed and mapped using geo-graphic information systems (GIS): terrain slope, relief aspect, land use method, and protected are-as. The analysis also allowed for the anthropogenic factors: the proximity of roads and settlements, affecting the accessibility of the potential solar power plant, but also the possible negative impact on people health due to excessive electromagnetic radiation. Thematic maps were produced by cab-inet work, valorization and elimination methods. By processing thematic maps, the final, synthesis map of the benefits of using solar energy in the territory of the municipality of Vranje was obtained. By analyzing the synthesis map and suitable locations obtained, calculations of potential installed power of solar power plants for the Vranje area were made to get an adequate representation of the quantity of electric energy that can be generated by photovoltaic effect in solar panels

The role of industry for economic development of settlements in South Banat's Danube municipalities

    Get PDF
After the World War II and the restoration of the country, the rapid industralization process started. In many settlements, predominantly urban, employment increased due to the new factories that were opened. During the political and economic system in Yugoslavia in that time, all enterprises were state-owned, while the private sector consisted of only smaller, mainly craft shops. Until the end of the eighties of the 20th century the industry was the dominant economic activity in Serbia. However, in the 1990's due to the unfavorable political situation the process of balkanization, disintegration of the SFRY, followed by wars and sanctions of the United Nations towards the FRY, the industry began to stagnate, some of the leading companies were operating increasingly difficult due to the impossibility of exporting finished products and importing raw materials. After the end of sanctions and changes in the political system, Serbia is entering the transition process, which is still running today. All these processes did not go beyond the South Banat's Danube municipalities (Pancevo, Kovin, Bela Crkva). The industry of South Banat is characterized by major changes in 21st century. Some companies are bankrupt while other are newly opened. The number of employes in industry has declined, and small and medium-sized enterprises have become dominant in relation to large ones. The aim of this paper is to analyse the development of industry in South Banat settlements in Danube municipalities in the 21st century. The analysis will show polarization on the territory, which led to forming several poles of development and concentration of industry in urban areas

Landslides susceptibility zonation of the territory of North Macedonia using Analytical Hierarchy Process approach

    No full text
Landslides are natural disasters that have an impact in many areas around the world including the territory of the Republic of Macedonia. In this country, about 300 large landslides are registered, most of which cause serious damage to the infrastructure almost every year. In that sense, the mapping of sites that are susceptible to landslides is essential for the management of these areas. This is a crucial step to prevent landslides in places where this could be expected or to minimize its damages. Therefore, a heuristic approach of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) is used in this work for the assessment of potential landslide areas in the Republic of Macedonia. In the procedure, 6 triggering factors indicating a strong influence on the landslide activity are selected, including lithology, slope angle, land cover, terrain curvature, distance from rivers and distance from roads. Through the procedure, expert-based weight of these factors is made. The LS model is produced with the summing up of the factor layers in the form of harmonized raster grids. Finally, the values of the grid model are classified according to the quantiles and natural breaks scheme. The produced maps show acceptable results confirmed by validation methods and ROC analysis, indicating that about 40% of the country area is under high and very high landslide susceptibility. This approach can be further improved if combined with statistical methods in the form of a hybrid model
