(In)consistent patterns of residential socioeconomic segregation in Belgrade, Serbia

    No full text
This paper explores contemporary socioeconomic segregation in Belgrade by considering contextually sensitive key underlying factors. The segregation pattern has been analyzed at the census tract level by using aggregated data on occupational structure as an approximation of a tracts’ socioeconomic status. It has been proven that the most prevailing characteristic of segregation in Belgrade is the decline of the socioeconomic status from the center to the periphery. This is mostly the result of peripheral informality, a process that has been a constant urban defining factor for nearly a century and a half. Peripheral informality has been perpetuated by the widespread urban poverty that was commonly pushed outward into spontaneously built neighborhoods, while the focus of elites has remained on the city center, thus preserving its prestige. Revolutionary socialist urbanism introduced large modernist estates that served the declared egalitarian ideology and constituted neighborhoods with mixed socioeconomic status, and these were placed as a buffer area between the contrasting center and periphery. Post-socialist privatization and the emergence of the housing market set the scene for residential mobility not prescribed by centralized allocation policies but by the residents’ housing needs and preferences. The neoliberals’ current urban development trajectory, through gentrification-like processes, is erasing pockets of socioeconomic irregularities that highlight the existing center-periphery polarization

Cloudiness and water from cloud seeding in connection with plants distribution in the Republic of Moldov

    No full text
Clouds play an important role in maintaining the balance in the environment. Cloudiness can influence numerous important ecological drivers, including growth, survival and distribution of plants. The cloud cover dynamics and distribution may provide key information for delineating various types of plant and species distribution. During a year, different types of clouds on a territory can influence the distribution of plants and potential of cloud seeding. New properties of cloudiness may be important for new ecological patterns and new adapted values of ecological drivers. In the territory of the Republic of Moldova, 30 years of cloudiness were taken to show new distribution of clouds properties and their influence on sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) and grapes (Vitis vinifera). The main result of this research is the first established map with the location of water derived from cloud seeding. In the last decade (2010–2020), the cloudiness increased by more than 15%. Another important focus of this research is the possibility of cloud seeding in line with recent deficit of precipitation, especially in dry areas. The territory of Moldova has 37% of semiarid and 6% of arid zones. The distribution and the potential of cloud seeding has been analyzed by means of Remote Sensing and GIS techniques and methodology, along with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Satellite data in the resolution of 1 km2 were downloaded for the period between 1990 and 2020. The exact distribution of clouds helped to determine the belts for the potential irrigation of crops. Extremely low cloudiness and a long period of drought may jeopardize the agricultural sector in the Republic of Moldova, and therefore, the irrigation from alternative water sources is of utmost importance

    Get PDF
Predmet istraživanja rada su prirodne i antropogene vrednosti planine Cer. Turističke potencijale planine Cer treba usmeriti ka razvoju letnjeg, kulturno-istorijskog, obrazovnog i verskog turizma, seoskog i etno, zdravstvenog i sportsko-rekreativnog turizma i ekoturizma. Neophodno je sačuvati sve posebnosti planine Cer, a to se postiže ulaganjem u održivi razvoj turizma i očuvanjem zdrave životne sredine. Osnovna ograničenja ostvarivanja takvih ciljeva su neadekvatna strategija razvoja turizma planine Cer i nedovoljna informisanost stanovništva. U radu su, takođe, korišćeni metodi analize, sinteze i komparativni metod. Upotrebom GIS alata (program QGIS 3.16.) rezultati istraživanja su kartografski prikazani.Urednik: Ivan Novkovi

At the beginning of the 21st century, specific forms of tourism appear, among which rural tourism stands out. Personal experience is important for tourists, as well as special experiences with the local population. Tourists are increasingly choosing quieter tourist destinations with rich natural and cultural resources. Given that rural-urban migration is becoming more frequent, the development of tourism in rural areas is one of the strategies for their preservation. Increasing employment and income through tourism can significantly improve the living conditions of the rural population, but also improve other economic activities. The Municipality of Topola, as one of the geographical units of Šumadija, is characterized by numerous opportunities for the development of tourism in rural areas. In addition to the preserved environment and tradition, a large number of limiting factors act at the same time, preventing significant development of rural tourism. Based on the advantages and limitations, ie possible types of tourist experiences in certain rural areas it is possible to single out several models of future tourist development. The Municipality of Topola is one of the most important areas in Serbia for agriculture and is synonymous with viticulture and fruit production. It is a well-known tourist destination and has specifics and potentials that support the accelerated development of entrepreneurship and stopping migration.

Are Image and Quality of Tourist Services Strategic Determinants of Satisfaction? Millennials’ Perspective in Emerging Destinations

    Get PDF
This study aims to investigate the level of satisfaction of foreign tourists, specifically millennials, based on different dimensions of destination image and the quality of the tourist services in Belgrade, the capital of the Republic of Serbia, as an emerging destination. Despite the tarnished image attached to the city after the Yugoslav Wars and the economic crisis in the 1990s, this emerging destination is becoming more popular among foreign visitors. A sample of 359 international tourists was surveyed. Structural equation modelling was used to test the relationships between the constructs. The results confirmed the positive effects of image and quality on satisfaction as well as a positive and direct effect of image on quality. Moreover, there was a partial mediation of quality between image and satisfaction. The findings have significant marketing and management implications for destination stakeholders. They provide useful insights for choosing effective strategies and an appropriate business tourism model in emerging destinations that can further help them to become more competitive

    Get PDF

Revitalizacija naselja zaštićenih planinskih prostora Srbije

    Get PDF
Osim nekoliko primera očuvanja i podizanja gornje granice privrednih i naseobinskih aktivnosti (turistički centri) planinske prostore Srbije dominantno karakteriše socio- ekonomski zastoj i nazadovanje, a sve češće i populacioni i naseobinski slom. Niska koncentracija, disperznost i smanjena vitalnost stanovništva i naselja dodatno otežavajaju i poskupljuju održavanje i opremanje infrastrukture na ovim prostorima. Ovakve tendencije vode uvećanju nevalorizovanih potencijala (prirodnih i socijanih) nacionalne teritorije. Vremenom razvojne disproporcije mogu postati ograničavajući faktor realizacije drugih strateških ciljeva egzistencije i razvoja države. Urednici: Velimir Šećerov, Dejan S. Impact of precipitation and human activities on suspended sediment transport load in the Velika Morava River Basin (Serbia)

    Get PDF
Sediment transport time series have shown a severe change in the suspended sediment load transported by the Velika Morava River (Republic of Serbia) during the last few decades. The research objectives of this study were to determine the suspended sediment trends, and to assess the impact of variations in precipitation and human activities on the suspended sediment load. The causes and timing of this severe decrease were analyzed, and the results show that there has been a signifcant sudden shift downwards for the suspended sediment load (p<0.0001) during the research period. The change points for sediment load were very similar and the transition years all ranged between 1982 and 1984. The combined efects of precipitation and human activities are responsible for the decrease in the suspended sediment load, with human activity being the most active factor in the sediment regime changes. The contribution rate for human activities amounts to 87.7–91.9%, while precipitation explains 8.1–12.3% of the reduction in the suspended sediment load. The processes of deagrarization and depopulation had an infuence on the sediment load decrease in the study area. The results of the spatial autocorrelation analysis of rural settlements showed that the reduction in sediment was due to the process of depopulation and the large reduction in the amount of arable land in rural areas and settlements. The changes in sediment regimes were also infuenced by soil and water conservation programmes

Estimation of potential soil erosion reduction using GIS-based RUSLE under different land cover management models: A case study of Pale Municipality, B&H

    No full text
Spatial assessment of soil erosion is an important indicator of ecological soil change and global environmental changes. This is especially true for countries with rich forest cover such as Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this study, the risk of soil erosion was assessed using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model and the impact of changes in the forest ecosystem, current conditions were compared with possible future forest management scenarios, and measures and solutions were proposed to reduce soil erodibility in vulnerable areas of the Pale Municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The studied area is at increased risk of soil erosion due to natural conditions (mountain relief, climate change, and the frequency of extreme climatic events—drought and heavy rains, which occur more and more frequently in a short period of time) and due to anthropogenic factors, such as large-scale deforestation and conversion of mountain areas for tourism purposes, tracing and construction of ski slopes and ski resorts in general, and expansion of settlements. All this leads to threats to water conservation areas, landslides, floods, forest fires, and additional reduction of forest areas due to drying of forests and expansion of settlements. GIS as a tool provides us with a quick and accurate way to find possible solutions to problems resulting from the intensive use and inadequate monitoring. In this study, we have tried to offer possible solutions and show the benefits that can be obtained by varying the factors that affect soil erodibility and depend on vegetation cover, that is, land use (C-factor). This study presents the application of RUSLE methods in combination with GIS for the purpose of planning economic activities, such as winter tourism development in the community of Pale. An increase in soil loss due to inappropriate land use was found, with the average annual soil loss due to deforestation in the ski area increasing to 909.43 t ha−1 year−1
