Decentralization of the urban tourist zone of Zlatibor

    No full text
Tourism cannot be imagined without preserved natural and cultural values, and it is important to raise awareness about the responsible business of the carriers of the tourist offer and the conscientious behavior of tourists. They should be directed towards insufficiently valorized potentials and thereby enable more even tourism development. The urban area of Zlatibor and the surrounding tourist values are an example of the necessary decentralization in order to prevent environmental degradation. The goal of scientific paper is twofold. The authors aim to point out the aggressive urbanization of Zlatibor, which greatly affects the once-preserved natural values and which directly conflicts with the application of the principles of sustainable development. Also, the goal is to present opportunities for the responsible development of tourism and complementary activities, which will undoubtedly encourage the conscientious construction of residential buildings and other facilities, important for the quality of life of the resident population. Establishing sustainability in mountains is of multiple importance, which can be observed at the local, regional, national and even global level. The analysis of planning documentation, available literature and satellite images determined the criteria on the basis of which the main analysis in the paper, SWOT analysis, was applied. Using Geographical Information Systems, the program QGIS 3.16. the analyzed data are shown cartographically

Evaluation and selection of methods and forms of cartographic presentation of demographic indicators

    No full text
The choice of cartographic method and graphic presentation format of demographic indicators for a specific territorial unit influences the efficiency of visual representation for various spatial analyses. On thematic maps, symbols in the form of geometric shapes present a large number of integrated data clearly and comprehensively. Graphic forms of demographic indicator representation through symbols require metric accuracy. Symbols, through their dimensions, provide a representation consistent with the magnitude of the phenomenon they represent. Metricity can be achieved by applying semioscale. Semioscale dimensionalization optimally aligns the symbol metric to the corresponding numerical values of the demographic indicator series. The form of cartographic presentation of demographic indicators requires specific mapping approaches to more comprehensively express the semiometric dimension. Particularly emphasized is the significance of semioscale cartography procedures through its differentiated, unified, and comparative way using map diagram methods

The knowledge economy, globalisation, and the restructuring of a post-socialist city

    No full text
The rise of the knowledge economy and globalisation has significantly impacted the socioeconomic and spatial structures of post-socialist cities, particularly in Central Eastern and South Eastern Europe. This study focuses on Belgrade, a prime example of such transformation, where foreign direct investments in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) have reshaped the urban landscape. Using micro-geographic data this paper examines the spatial dynamics and localisation patterns of foreign and domestic KIBS within Belgrade. The research reveals distinct locational preferences between these two groups, influenced by factors such as urban infrastructure, amenities, and the city's historical and post-socialist development. The findings provide insights into the contemporary transformation of Belgrade's urban structure, contributing to a broader understanding of post-socialist urban development and offering practical implications for urban planning and policy-making

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly important role in geography, enabling the development of new methods of geospatial data analysis and research. Its ability to process large amounts of data, identify patterns and make precise decisions makes it a valuable tool for achieving sustainable development. AI has a wide range of applications in geography, including the automatic extraction of information from satellite images and photographs, the automatic generation and updating of digital maps, the improvement of the mobile devices geolocation accuracy and the development of models for the prediction of geographic phenomena. Although AI can have a significant impact on geographical research, there are several arguments both pros and cons its application in this field. The paper presents the possibility of applying AI in geography, as well as certain challenges and risks related to its use. Also, the paper presents the possibility of using ChatGPT and Gemini as artificial intelligence for conversation. It is important to properly balance the use of AI, taking into account ethical and legal aspects, and the implementation should be transparent, accountable and with the participation of experts from the relevant fields in order to achieve the best possible results.Уредници: Велимир Шећеров, Иван Раткај, Даница Шанти

Changes in the social status of the population in the post-Yugoslav period and the impact on housing in Belgrade

    Get PDF
In the post-socialist period, there were many changes in the post-Yugoslav region. The dissolution of the state and the civil war were just some of the most important events. The successor states went through the post-socialist transition at a different pace. The political and economic transition had a significant impact on the social status of the population. According to numerous international urban studies, there is a causal relationship between the social status of the population and the housing situation. Looking at the social status of the population in Belgrade, it is obvious that the social status decreases from the centre to the periphery. The housing situation in Belgrade is very heterogeneous. First, there is a historical centre filled with buildings from different eras: from the pre-World War II period, from the socialist period and from the post-socialist period. Secondly, there are socialist neighbourhoods that surround the historic core of the city. Finally, there are the neighbourhoods on the periphery, which are mostly informally built. The withdrawal of the state and the reintroduction of market mechanisms in the housing sector, drastic proportions of owner-occupied housing, the expansion of illegal construction activity, international isolation during the 1990s and the subsequent reconnection to the global economy, albeit with extremely weakened institutions, characterised post-socialist housing and urban development in Belgrade. Added to this was another wave of demographic pressure from the former Yugoslav republics and Kosovo. Through the lens of social status and housing situation, we observe the patterns of residential segregation in the post-socialist period. Due to the incomparability of statistical data from different periods, we use a combination of sources and research approaches. The first two decades of the post-socialist period were analysed at the level of census units, using data on the education of the population as a proxy for their social status.Editors: Ivan Marinković, Marko Galja

Functional typology of settlements in the Srem region, Serbia

    No full text
The development of the functional settlement typology methodology is of academic and practical importance as it incorporates the social, economic, and demographic dimensions of regional development. Rural settlements are seen as a base for labor; traditional urban centers have become a base for commuters, while at the same time, new economic centers are emerging where capital investment is accumulating. This article presents the research conducted in the Srem region (located in the province of Vojvodina) to determine the functional typology of the settlement, which is of social, economic, and demographic importance for the region itself and for Serbia as a whole. This well-known immigration area in Serbia has been inhabited for centuries for its specific economic and political reasons. The very intensive economic activities of the last two decades have been influenced by development investments and contributed to the functional transformation of the settlements. The census data from 2022 make it possible to determine a functional typology of settlements in the Srem region using the factor method (principal component analysis). The article aims to explain the basic characteristics of functional types of settlements and to determine the mechanisms of their territorial distribution, which would be helpful in the future planning and organization of local and regional development of the Republic of Serbia

GIS-Based Spatial Modeling of Landslide Susceptibility Using BWM-LSI: A Case Study – City of Smederevo (Serbia)

    No full text
Landslides and slope processes constitute one of the most frequent natural hazards in valleys near major rivers and mountainous regions. The surface layer, characterized by its relatively loose composition, is prone to sliding due to a combination of distinct natural and human-related factors. Specific sections along the right bank of the Danube River in Smederevo city exhibit significant susceptibility to landslide activation, often leading to substantial material losses and posing a risk to the local population. The initial step in the provided research involves analyzing existing literature and mapping landslides within the study area. The initial analysis covers both natural conditions and anthropogenic activities. The second step includes establishing a geospatial database in the Geographic Information System and generating eight thematic maps. In the third step, different weight coefficients were assigned to the criteria, which facilitated the creation of the Landslide Susceptibility Index using the Best–Worst Method. Subsequently, in the fourth step, a composite map illustrating landslide susceptibility was produced. According to this research, about 4% of the territory of Smederevo, or 19.3 km2, is highly or very highly susceptible to landslides. These localities are located on the right bank of the Danube River and around the Ralja River. Receiver operating characteristic-area under the curve value indicates very high predictive power (approximately 1), thus suggesting the reliability of the used methodology. This visualization of areas highly prone to such occurrences empowers policymakers to implementmore effective environmental protectionmeasures and institute sustainable management practices for agricultural parcels in this region. Also, the provided research represents the inaugural integration of advanced remote sensing techniques and interdisciplinary investigations, offering deeper insights into landslide activity in the study area and yielding more comprehensive results
