Measuring tourist satisfaction and destination image with HOLSAT

    Get PDF
HOLSAT instrument measures tourist satisfaction by comparing tourists' expectations and experience regarding various destination attributes. Destination image influences tourists' expectations, while experience in the destination modifies tourists' image perceptions, creating differences between pre-visit and post-visit images. Based on these relationships, which are theoretically explored in its first part, this study argues that HOLSAT may be used for destination image research. The second part of the study represents a demonstration of how HOLSAT may be used for measurement of both tourist satisfaction and destination image, whereby the research was conducted in Belgrade, a developing urban destination. The city's tourism industry and destination image were severely damaged in the 1990s, whereby they have started to slowly recover since 2000. Based on the results of the conducted survey, satisfactory and unsatisfactory destination attributes were identified, as well as positive and negative components of city's pre-visit destination image. The most important positive components are related to the destination's affordability, while the negative components are related to safety, cleanliness and the arrival station. Modifications of destination image caused by the visit were also identified. The biggest image improvement after the visit was registered in attributes related to safety and the friendliness of the local residents, while the negative modifications related to the public transport were identified as the most important ones

As the fourth hydrophilous species of the genus Typhloiulus Latzel, 1884, the new species T. balcanicus Antic sp. nov. is described from two caves in the Stara Planina Mountains of Serbia. A brief discussion of the relationships between the new species and congeners with modified and unmodified mouthparts is presented, as well as short notes on the habitat of the new species and comments on other semiaquatic millipedes with modified mouthparts

Impact of population dynamics on spatial development of Belgrade urban region

    Get PDF
Belgrade urban region, as complex and dynamic system of settlements, is the space of the largest population and functions concentration on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The starting point of this paper is the importance of this region for the development and integration of Serbian territory, as well as for Serbia's integration into the wider regional surroundings. Spatial expansion of urban areas and the population concentration within this region imposes an important issue of direction and consequences of its recent and future development. In order to observe contemporary development trends in Belgrade urban region relevant demographic and spatial indicators are taken into consideration in the period from 1990 to 2012. Research is focused on the impact of population dynamics, i.e. natural movement of population and migrations, on the expansion of built-up areas and changes in the urban form. The intention of the research is also to examine potential correlation between population dynamics and expansion of built-up areas on the one hand and settlements position and intensity of its functional relations with urban core on the other hand, in order to identify possible directions of planning interventions towards achieving more sustainable urban development in the future.Editor: Aspa Gospodin

The Brand Potential of „Soft“ Factors of the Territorial Capital: A Study of Eight Medium Sized Cities in Serbia

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper was to explore the brand potential of certain “soft” fac tors of territorial capital in the medium-sized cities in Serbia. The concept of territorial capital refers to the total city development potential that combines objective, “hard” and subjective, “soft” factors of an area, in order to attract investment and generate local development. As city branding has become an imperative of local development strategies, this paper aims at connecting these concepts in order to emphasize a po ssible brand potential of some “soft“ dimensions of territorial capital. The paper is based on the data obtained from the research conducted from 2013 to 2015 by the Institute for Sociological Research of University of Belgrade on a representative sam ple of population aged 18-65 in eight medium-sized cities in Serbia. The first part of the paper presents the concept of territorial capital and clarifies its connection with the city branding. The second part of the paper is dedicated to the analysis related to Serbia. It begins by summarizing the key features of its socio-spatial transformation in the post-socialist period and points to the discordance between the state of territorial capital and the city branding process. Then the method of research which focuses on the citizens’ perception (a neglected soft dimension of territorial capital) is presented. The obtained questionnaire results are analysed through the lens of the city branding approach and the application of somewhat modified dimensions (presence, pulse and people) of the City Brand Index (CBI). The concluding part briefly recaps how and why the observed soft dimensions of the territorial capital might be recognized as a relevant potential in the process of (re) branding of the researched cities

The failure of planning endevour in north east border area of Serbia towards Bulgaria

With the transition, spatial planning was supposed to mitigate the negative effects of the new player - market to the public interest. But, seems like our planning didn't find the mechanisms to mitigate those effects created by the market inside it. Planning institutions in pretransitional period were exclusively in public sector. We now have on one side, some big planning institution, partially financed from the state's budget usually with the monopoly over elaboration of one group of plans and on the other side, smaller ones which are being privatized. Both are thrown to the market and are trying to acquire as much engagements as possible in order to secure enough financing. They are producing more plans for less money in a shorter period of time. As a result, these former public agents diverted by the new hostile conditions given by undeveloped market and neoliberal environment are still presenting traditional rigid planning model, deterministic and inflexible, with fixed land use parameters and regulations. Seems like the turbulent times in which the most important task is to survive didn't give them a chance to develop and to introduce more innovative and novel models in view of participative, strategic and action plan oriented planning. The failure of planning enterprise to achieve at least some balance in regional inequity is clearly visible in peripheral, i.e. border areas. The paper discuss the main objectives and planning concepts in various overlapping planning documents on national, regional and local levels elaborated for Timocka krajina, a border region situated in NE Serbia towards a frontier to Bulgaria, and the obvious gap between planning optimism and accurate demographic, social and economic decline of the region, despite both local and European based, mostly cross border related projects and initiatives

Novi Sad and its surroundings are rich with the most diverse natural values that are good for the development of health tourism and recreation activities on their territory. Being in nature, next to water surfaces, forests and all green favorably affects on psycho - physical condition and improves life quality in urban environments. Aim of this work is geoecological evaluation of Novi Sad and its surroundings with the use of quantitative model of diversity, ie Hans Kiemstedt model for the purpose of health tourism and recreation. With this work authors want to contribute to further affirmation of geoecological evaluation in the area of planning and managing of urban areas. Methodology is based on Kiemstedt model, and criteria that are used are: forest and water edges, relief energy, way of land use and climate factor, or conditions of natural environment. Use of this model gives less of more favorable surfaces for the development of mentioned activities. The advantage of this model is the use of modern GIS technologies, obtaining tested and objective data that have a wide use

    Ecological consequences of warfare

    Get PDF
During 20th century several wars were conducted in the world. It can be claimed that these wars caused serious ecological consequences, which affected the quality of the environment, the health and life of people, a decrease in population, slowing down the development of economy and many others. Four wars were waged solely at the territory of the Republic of Serbia: from the Balkan Wars via World War I and II to the NATO aggression in 1999. The NATO bombing caused the most severe consequences for the environment. Due to a rather negative effect of warfare on the environment, such effect is visible at the beginning of most famous wars. However, it was present in some wars and remained the threat for many years. This paper deals with the examples of warfare in the world that data and concrete indicators exist for and it focuses public attention to problems and consequences of warfare
