GIS methods and analysis of archaeological layers in the Toplica district (Serbia)

    Get PDF
In this paper, we are explaining a decade long investigation of historical, sacral and archaeological sites in the Toplica District (Serbia) as one of the significant cultural heritage sites in Europe with more than 226 objects with different time of origin. The survey was carried out for the purpose of better recognizing the archaeological potential. In science like archaeology, static objects, if not dynamized, remain unrecognizable to the general public, regardless of their historical and archaeological importance. Historical changes during the period of more than 7,000 years, with many sites of cultural heritage in this district, were recognized. Ordinary kriging was employed through Quantum Geographical Information System (QGIS) and System for Automated Geoscientific Analysis (SAGA). The positions of historical objects are registered, from the Neolithic period to modern times. With the help of GIS and geo-statistical methods, archaeological and historical layers can be rediscovered and better recognized. GIS algorithm ordinary kriging was used to complete the cultural heritage potential and archaeological valorization of the objects with geo-spatial dispersion. As a final product, we have obtained maps with historical and archaeological locations. For the first time, we used a scientific name for contour lines (archlines) with an equal number of archaeological units per density. In the end, archaeological and historical objects and their features were shown with the support of geographical and GIS methods

Duration of the Snow Cover and the Need for Artificial Snow—A Challenge for Management in Ski-Centres of Serbia

    No full text
The production and use of artificial snow has become necessary in most ski centres in Europe. The lack of snow creates problems in ski centres that were built without the prior valuation of natural factors. The survey covered winter tourist centres in Serbia, which are facing problems due to the shortening of the tourist season caused by the lack of snow cover on the ski slopes. The duration of the snow cover is the result of several factors. Air temperature changes were analysed in mountain tourist centres in Serbia, as well as at undeveloped destinations with a potential for snow sports. On the basis of the quantitative indicators of the air temperature and the methodology by means of which snowmaking is carried out, the time periods during the year for making artificial snow are presented. Due to the forecast rise in air temperature, the issue of profitability of artificial snow in the ski centres of Serbia remains open

Population ageing in Serbia has pervading effect on many societal spheres. Paradigm of active ageing highlights the importance for older to lead healthy and productive life. The aim of this paper is to explore active ageing practices of institutionalised older citizens considering their sociodemographic characteristics and migration background. Semi-structured interview, as a qualitative research method was used to grasp perceptions and experiences of 27 older residents in nursing homes regarding adjustment in later life and daily activities. Additional valuable insight on topic was gained from institutional social workers. According to the results, the routine of daily living of the elders varies depending on individual abilities, preferences, health, marital status and migration history. The findings suggest that institutional setting does not have to represent barrier to active ageing, with implications for further research and practice.

    No full text
Since patient comfort during transport is a matter of paramount importance, this paper aims to determine the possibilities of applying neural networks for its prediction and monitoring. Specific objectives of the research include monitoring and predicting patient transport comfort, with subjective assessment of comfort by medical personnel. An original Android application that collects signals from an accelerometer and a GPS sensor was used with the aim of achieving the research goals. The collected signals were processed and a total of twelve parameters were calculated. A multilayer perceptron was created in the proposed research. The evaluation results indicate acceptable accuracy and give the possibility to apply the same model to the next patient transport. The root mean square error was 0.0215 and the overall confusion matrix prediction accuracy was 90.07%. Moreover, the results were validated in real usage. The limitations and future work are highlighted

Assessment of the impact of depopulation on soil erosion: case study - Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

    Get PDF
Soil erosion is one of the most significant environmental problems in the Republika Srpska / Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 1992-1995 civil war left serious consequences, and together with the depopulation process in the last few decades, it had a significant impact on the intensity of erosion. Depopulation of the Republika Srpska (RS) is evident from the 2013 B&H population and housing census. The results showed that there are 400,846 fewer inhabitants in the RS, and of the total number of settlements, 88.01% are depopulated. The Erosion Potential Method (EPM) was used to map soil erosion and calculate annual gross erosion in the RS. This showed an evident decrease in erosion intensity throughout most of the Entity. This research is an attempt to assess the depopulation impact on soil erosion intensity and gross erosion in the RS using the Erosion Potential Method and statistical analysis. Statistical analysis of 44 municipalities in the RS revealed a significant regression relationship between a decrease in sediment production and a decrease in population. The linear regression coefficient in these municipalities ranged from 0.72 to 0.95, and the coefficient of determination ranged from 0.52 to 0.91. The regression analysis included 1,248 settlements in the RS where there was a change in sediment production and in the population. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient for these settlements is 0.79, while the coefficient of determination for the observed variables is 0.63. This methodological approach represents a good basis for future research, and for all integrated water management projects, soil protection, forest ecosystems and environmental protection, spatial planning, agriculture and other human activities

Capacities and energy potential of thermal-mineral springs in the area of the Kopaonik tourist region (Serbia)

    No full text
In the Kopaonik tourist region of Serbia, there are numerous thermal-mineral (TM) springs with an outlet temperature which ranges from 21 to 78.7 degrees C. The main objective of the study is to determine the capacities, thermal power and energy potential of 19 TM springs in 4 spas of this region. This study supports the hypothesis that in the Kopaonik tourist region, TM springs have considerable capacity, as well as heat power and energy potential. The modern method for determining the energy potential and heat power, based on the flow rate, the inlet and outlet temperatures of the TM springs, was applied in the region with rich geothermal sources, and the obtained results were converted to the fossil fuel energy. The research of the given region, using the above method, is more detailed than the previous research carried out at the national level, so the results are more reliable and suggest that similar research should be carried out at the regional and local level. The estimated total heat energy is 758.51 TJ/year, and heat power (capacity) is 24.1 MWt. The TM springs of this region make up 9.06% of the estimated geothermal energy of Serbia and 7.53% of the estimated heat power. The total energy of this region is equivalent to 210697222.3 kW/h (210.7 GWh) or 18116.7 toe and represent significant energy saving potential. The results indicate the possibility of direct use of energy from TM spring and replacement of fossil fuels, which reduces CO2 emissions and positively affects the quality of the environment. The use of geothermal energy will reduce heating costs and ensure electricity supply due to the growing need for it
