The risk can be viewed from the perspective of a traveler, a business operator or a tourist destination. In the context of a traveler, the perceived risk may influence the choice of destination and the behavior of the traveler. The tourism and hotel management sector today is very exposed to various external and internal challenges and crises. External factors include political instability, economic conditions, the environment and the weather. The level of impact of crises and disasters on tourism may vary depending on their nature, size and scope. In some incidents, the recovery period is short, while in others, such as natural disasters that damage infrastructure and communications, the recovery period is incomparably longer. The response and recovery varies depending on the nature and impact of the crisis or disaster. In some cases, the destination may not be directly affected by a crisis that makes it difficult to be managed, such as the tourism crisis caused by pandemics. In essence, a crises differ from a catastrophe based on whether the cause is the result of some internal organizational failure or an external event over which the organization has no control. As the world is prone to crises and disasters, the focus is on crisis management, which includes crisis prevention, crisis preparedness, crisis response and crisis management, to help businesses and destinations reduce vulnerability and build resilience to crises and disasters. Unfortunately, one gets the impression that for decades, no significant attention has been paid to research on the topic of crisis management in the field of tourism and hotel management. Today, articles on the tourism crisis and disaster management can be found in many highcategory journals. This study discusses proposed measures to mitigate risks and restrictions in tourism caused by economic crisis, natural disasters (tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, floods), climate change, terrorism and political instability, and pandemics, especially Covid-19, where special attention is given to considering a new risk scenario after the pandemic (what are the prospects and challenges for the new era of tourism).

GIS-based Landslide Susceptibility Mapping and Assessment using MCDM-BWM: A Case Study - City od Smederevo (Serbia)

    No full text
Landslides and slope processes constitute one of the most frequent natural hazards in valleys near major rivers and mountainous regions. The surface layer, characterized by its relatively loose composition, is prone to sliding due to a combination of distinct natural and human-related factors (i.e. landslide causal factors (CF)). Along the right bank of the Danube River, specific sections of Smederevo city face considerable susceptibility to landslide activation, frequently resulting in substantial material losses and posing a risk to the local populace. This study entails on-site investigation, involving the mapping of recent landslides, coupled with database analysis through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and advanced remote sensing techniques. The initial analysis encompasses geological characteristics, morphometric conditions, hydrological and climatic factors, as well as anthropogenic influences such as land use, all contributing to soil instability. Employing GIS alongside the Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) technique, specifically the Best-Worst Method (BWM), yielded insights into landslide susceptibility within the territory of Smederevo city respectively. By visualizing areas highly prone to such disastrous occurrences, policymakers are empowered to enact more suitable environmental protection measures and institute sustainable management practices for agricultural parcels in this region. During 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic also affected the Republic of Serbia. It affected the entire economy, but especially tourism as an economic activity. The impossibility of going to foreign countries for the sake of a tourist visit, on the other hand, encouraged the development of domestic tourism and increased attendance of domestic tourist attractions. Certainly, it should be pointed out that the Ram and Golubac fortresses, after renovation, were opened in 2020, so that is one of the reasons for the greater number of visitors to these cultural facilities. Middle and Lower Danube regions are an area with cultural heritage that has exceptional artistic, historical and cultural value. The aim of this paper is to research the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism development in Middle and Lower Danube as the axis of tourism development in Serbia. The paper will analyze tourism visitation of three fortresses (Smederevo, Ram, Golubac), which represent the backbone and poles of tourism development not only in this region, but also in the Republic of Serbia. The used data will cover the period of the last three years, because tickets for Golubac and Ram fortresses were not sold before that period. The analysis will focus on the number of tourists, the ratio of domestic and foreign tourists, as well as the comparison between these facilities. The expected results are a higher share of local tourists compared to foreign tourists, higher attendance at the Golubac Fortress compared to the other two locations, as well as an increase in the number of tourists in all locations from 2020. The results of this work will be useful to local governments, the local community, and all other interested entities.

Possibilities and limitations of the development of rural tourism in the Municipality of Topola

At the beginning of the 21st century, specific forms of tourism appear, among which rural tourism stands out. Personal experience is important for tourists, as well as special experiences with the local population. Tourists are increasingly choosing quieter tourist destinations with rich natural and cultural resources. Given that rural-urban migration is becoming more frequent, the development of tourism in rural areas is one of the strategies for their preservation. Increasing employment and income through tourism can significantly improve the living conditions of the rural population, but also improve other economic activities. The Municipality of Topola, as one of the geographical units of Šumadija, is characterized by numerous opportunities for the development of tourism in rural areas. In addition to the preserved environment and tradition, a large number of limiting factors act at the same time, preventing significant development of rural tourism. Based on the advantages and limitations, ie possible types of tourist experiences in certain rural areas it is possible to single out several models of future tourist development. The Municipality of Topola is one of the most important areas in Serbia for agriculture and is synonymous with viticulture and fruit production. It is a well-known tourist destination and has specifics and potentials that support the accelerated development of entrepreneurship and stopping migration.

Did the Covid-19 Pandemic Change Internal Rural Migration Patterns in Serbia?

    Get PDF
Recent empirical research on internal migration has focused on the change in migration volume, before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, by the degree of urbanization. Less is known about the types of rural areas that are attracting internal migrants. This study aims to explore the changes in internal rural migration patterns in Serbia due to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the types of rural settlements as places of destinations and types of urban settlements as places of the origin of migrants. Relying on the additionally processed official national annual statistical data for the period 2018–2021, we offer findings on the differences in volume and socio-demographic characteristics of migrants across six internal migration flows (from small towns, medium-sized towns, and large cities, to suburban and non-suburban rural settlements). The results reveal that the pandemic affected an increase of rural–rural migration as well as rural in-migration from mediumsized towns. We also find that after an initial drop in values for in- and out-migration rates in 2020, relocation intensity exceeded the pre-pandemic level in 2021, with a positive net migration rate for all age groups except 15–30. The unfavorable economic characteristics of rural in-migrants shifted slightly in pandemic years since the share of active and population with personal means rose in non-suburban settlements, while the percentage of dependent population decreased. The opposite holds for suburban settlements

Periglacial Relief Phenomena on Mount Vardenik (Southeastern Serbia)

    Get PDF
In the medium-high mountains of Serbia (1,000-2,000 m.a.s.l), sporadic periglacial relief forms occur, which is also the case with Mount Vardenik (1,876 m.high), a mountain in the southeast of Serbia. During reconnaissance, certain relict and sub-recent periglacial phenomena and landforms in the highest part of the mountain have been identified: block slides, rock flows, thermogenic landslides in springs, nivation-induced relief and in one location cryoplanation terraces. Sparsely clustered and individual occurrences of frost splitting and solifluction of the land surface and small areas with grass turf indicate contemporary signs of sporadically present seasonal frost and freeze-thaw cycles. Periglacial morphology and its processes have been recorded and investigated using a qualitative geomorphological procedure. The main problem is the origin of periglacial phenomena (occurrences and landforms) of the relief, considering that the analysis of the contemporary climate, geoecological properties and anthropogenic activities indicate that there are no condi-tions for the existence and development of a contemporary periglacial environment on the mountain. The problem was analyzed considering the climate change in general and, in particular, geoecological conditions created under the influence of human activities. Due to the observed sporadic relict and sub-recent periglacial relief on Mount Vardenik, in contemporary conditions the periglacial environment of this area can be consid-ered as relict or as a phenomenon bordering the limits of differentiation. The relict property also results from the fact that on the mountain, due to the contemporary climate and changed geoecological conditions, the transition zone of the periglacial environment cannot be distinguished

Before becoming “Brazilian Germans”: Sociogeographical mapping of “Danube Germans” in Vojvodina

    Get PDF
The settlement of Germans on the territory of today's Vojvodina began in the early 18th century, when after several wars the border between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires was established. The presence of so-called “Danube Swabians” was evident until the end of the World War II, i.e. the end of the Nazi occupation, when most of them were expelled by the new socialist government in Yugoslavia and deprived of their civil rights and property. After the expulsion, they found refuge in different parts of the world. For some of them, Brazil was the final destination like for many other peoples of German origin, e. g. Hunsrik-speaking “Deitschbrasiliooner”. Yet, socially and historically the situation was substantially different. This poster focuses on a little-known segment of the "Donauschwowe" from former Yugoslavia, who in 1951 formed a new community of 500 families that eventually emigrated to Entre Rios, Gemeinde Guarapuava in Paraná (Brazil). What began as an agrarian society "Agrária" seems to have evolved into a vibrant cultural and linguistic community that has preserved many Danube-Swabian traditions and the language to this day. While the community members’ preservation efforts are well documented (e.g. YouTube videos, homeland museum within the cultural foundation), there has been little relevant research on the linguistic issues raised by this bilingual situation, including the historical dimension of language contact (it can be assumed that Serbo-Croatian played the most important role here, although not exclusively). Our aim is to start filling this gap by providing a cartographic and historical-contextual framework for further research on the virtually extinct communities of Yugoslav "Danube Swabians" in the post-World War II period, with special attention to the above-mentioned minority in Brazil. In accordance with our interdisciplinary background, our poster offers 1) introductory historical and demographic facts about the Danube Swabians who emigrated to Guarapuava (Brazil), presented with several maps, and formulate 2) open questions about the corresponding socio-demographic, ethnographic and linguistic changes, which we intend to address in our further research. We will draw on census data, existing historical maps, online spoken and multimedia sources, and literature on Danube-Swabian dialects and German language minorities in Latin America

Specialization in tourism – a tourist-geographical research of foreign demand in Belgrade and Serbia

    Get PDF
Specialization in tourism is realized within the offer and as a part of the modern tourist demand. It appears and develops in parallel with tourism, due to changes in society and the economy, which makes it conceptually complex. Apart from tourism, specialization can be studied from other aspects, such as social sciences or economics. In order to investigate the spatial characteristics of tourist traffic, the specialization index and the regional factor were calculated. With the help of the regional factor (Rfa), a change in the geographical distribution of tourist arrivals of foreign tourists in a certain period of time was determined, putting a smaller and larger spatial unit (Belgrade and Serbia) in a relationship. The time component of the research is defined by a ten-year period (2011–2020) and available statistical data. The specialization index shows diversification in the context of the countries from which tourists come, in order to investigate the focus on individual countries, ie. changes in tourism demand. High values of the specialization index are not considered desirable, because in that case the destination is sensitive to one or a smaller number of emitting countries. Therefore, the negative trends are in appropriately reflected on the tourism in the destination. The aim of the research is to determine whether the tourist polarization of Belgrade in relation to other destinations in Serbia is evident. The results of the research are expected to show to what extent and why there is a fluctuation of foreign tourist stays in Belgrade and Serbia.

Planiranje zaštićenog turističkog prostora: studija slučaja selo Dojkinci, Stara planina

    Get PDF
Urednici: Dejan Filipović, Velimir Šećerov, Dejan S. The reconstruction of the great 2020 torrential flood in Western Serbia

    No full text
The Ljuboviđa watershed in Western Serbia with an area of 158 km2 is frequently affected by torrential floods, which have devastating effects. The soil characteristics, land use patterns and rugged topography ensure the rapid generation of surface runoff during extreme rainfall events. The main focus of this work is to reconstruct the extreme torrential flood event of Ljuboviđa on 22 June 2020, by applying three flood estimation methods suitable for ungauged watersheds—the hydraulic method of flood traces, the rational method and the combined method of Soil Conservation Service and synthetic unit hydrograph theory (SCS-SUH). In all three methods, there are the most sensitive and critical parameters, so the derivation of their values was carefully carried out. These parameters are the Manning roughness coefficient, n in the method of flood traces, the runoff coefficient, C in the rational method and the curve number, CN in the SCS-SUH method. Therefore, in the case of a watershed with no hydrological record, we propose the employment of multiple methods to minimize the uncertainties in the analysis of torrential floods. The approach with three implemented methods in this work allowed to compare the obtained results, i.e. estimated peak discharges: (a) QmaxFT = 176.8 m3 s−1 by applying the hydraulic method of flood traces; (b) QmaxRM = 152.7 m3 s−1 by applying the rational method; and (c) QmaxSCS = 186.7 m3 s−1 by applying the SCS-SUH method. Taking into account the variability of the results, the mean peak discharge of the June 2020 Ljuboviđa flood of 172.07 m3 s−1 is adopted, so the specific maximal discharge is 1.09 m3 s−1 km−2. According to the SCS-SUH method, we concluded that the flood event of Ljuboviđa on 22 June 2020, was a flood with a 100-year return period. The main results and findings could serve as a solid basis for designing future studies on flood risk management in response to the growing hazards of torrential floods
