(Dis)similarities between the urban systems of the former Yugoslav republics
National urban systems are dynamic and subject to constant change,
which can be the result of spontaneous development or planned action,
while major changes can be caused by changes in administrative
boundaries. The observation of the past and present state of the urban
system and the search for deviations from certain regularities in
terms of population size of the cities within the urban system and
their causes are necessary for planning the future organisation of
the settlement network in each country. Polarisation, which is expressed
in the pronounced population dominance of the capital, is
a key feature of urban systems in all former Yugoslav republics, with
slight differences in scale. Today’s state is mainly the result of an intensive
urbanisation process in the second half of the 20th century
and the creation of new administrative borders after the collapse of
the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. However, certain dissimilarities
in later development could allow interesting conclusions to
be drawn about different developmental factors and causal relationships.
Against this background, the current hierarchy (vertical dimension),
the spatial (horizontal) dimensions and the development of the
urban systems of the former Yugoslav republics were analysed in order
to assess possible development trends in the future. Prominent
approaches for researching and modelling urban systems were used
within the study, in particular the Rank-size Rule and the Law of the
Primate City. The study is based on available data, including previous
and recent censuses (with the exception of Montenegro and Bosnia

Internal migration in Serbia through the lens of spatial planning: data sources and possible methodological solutions
In the first two decades of the 21st century, Serbia faced a significant population decline (from 7.5 million to 6.65 million), which affected almost 95 per cent of all settlements and 90 per cent of local centres. Beside general depopulation and “urban shrinkage”, unfavourable migration flows pose an additional challenge for spatial development. The spatial patterns of internal migration trace general socio-economic processes and thus represent one of the most important indicators of the diffusion of development within the territory. At the same time, internal migration flows represent a feedback loop for the increase of development disproportions. Considering that one of the main strategic objectives of spatial development in Serbia at all territorial levels (national, regional and local) is a more balanced distribution of the population, a broader and deeper insight into the extent and flows of internal migration can make an important contribution to spatial planning. Against this background, the study aims to identify various sources of statistical data and possible methodological solutions for conducting an analysis of internal migration in Serbia. The study utilises three different types of data provided by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, including: Population Census (migration characteristics of the population), Internal Migration statistics (immigration and emigration data based on changes of residence) and birth and death statistics (combined with population census data). The data used are partly published via the dissemination database and partly unpublished. The research results provide information on the advantages and disadvantages of using the above-mentioned data sources, e.g. data quality, availability, level of detail, etc. In addition, a comparative analysis carried out with all three data sources using specific examples revealed possible discrepancies in the results.Editors: Ivan Marinković, Marko Galja
The nature of urban sprawl in Western Balkan cities
The paper draws attention to the process of urban growth in the
Western Balkans, which is principally reflected in the physical
expansion into the surrounding area, leading to the conversion of
land into urban fabric – urban sprawl. According to the principles
of sustainable development, this process is considered unjustified,
especially if it is not a consequence of population growth. The
features and the intensity of urban sprawl in the Western Balkans
have been determined by mathematical and statistical methods,
using data from the Urban Atlas database. The main common
features and differences related to urban sprawl in the analyzed
cities are determined by several factors, which are discussed in
the paper. The purpose of the analysis of the intensity of urban
sprawl between 2012 and 2018 is to ensure a better
understanding of future processes that pose a potential ‘threat’ in
environmental terms, but also of other aspects of sustainable
development, relevant for bodies and individuals responsible for
urban planning. In accordance with the methodology used, the
results of the research confirm the presence of urban sprawl in
Western Balkan cities, although it has not been proven that there
are features common to all cities for any of the analyzed indicators
Comparative Geomorphometric Analysis of Drainage Basin Using AW3D30 Model in ArcGIS and QGIS Environment: Case Study of the Ibar River Drainage Basin, Montenegro
Geomorphometric analysis provides crucial insights into the hydrological characteristics by delineating the land-surface features of a drainage basin. The study focused on analyzing the geomorphometric parameters of the Montenegrin segment of the Ibar River drainage basin using the ALOS Global Digital Surface Model 30 m (AW3D30). Geomorphometric parameters, covering linear and areal parameters, were computed using standard mathematical formulas in LibreOffice Calc software and hydrology tools in commercial GIS software ArcGIS, as well as open-source software QGIS with SAGA GIS modules. Results reveal a dendritic pattern in the stream network, with an inverse relationship between stream length and order, and an elevated bifurcation ratio indicating heightened vulnerability to flooding, influenced by geological, geomorphological, and climatic factors. Furthermore, examination of diverse areal morphometric parameters, such as drainage density, stream frequency, form factor, circularity ratio, and elongation ratio, unveils the hydrological dynamics of the Ibar basin. This characterization illustrates the region as possessing high permeability and dense vegetation cover, suggesting vulnerability to erosion and consequent effects on water and sediment discharge. Additionally, this study underscores the significance of user-defined parameters in geomorphometric modeling, particularly in selecting algorithms within analysis software, which significantly impact drainage basin parameters
Assessment of the Economic Consequences of Riverbank Erosion: The Case of the South Morava River, Serbia
Landscape transformation, degradation and destruction are caused by fluvial processes as the predominant erosive processes in Serbia. The loss of arable land due to riverbank erosion is permanent, and the economic consequences are, therefore, especially pronounced. The primary aim of this study was to quantify the intensity of riverbank erosion in the lower part of the South Morava River (Serbia) during period 1924–2020, evaluate its economic consequences, and conduct a cost benefit analysis of revetment investments. The economic effects of riverbank erosion were analyzed by means of land loss and reduction in the quantity of agricultural production. An interdisciplinary research approach was applied using specific methodological procedures to calculate the riverbank erosion and soil (land) loss intensity (geographic information system-GIS), the economic consequences of riverbank erosion (ECRE), and the results of an investment decision-making model. The results showed that 202.6[Formula: see text]ha of arable land was lost during the observed period, the value of arable land loss was almost 622,000[Formula: see text]USD, and the loss in agricultural production was 7.5 million USD (discount rate 3.7%). The model is seen as the main research output and can be used for the assessment of long-term capital-intensive infrastructure projects in developing countries. The analysis identified the river segments that are economically viable for investments in riverbank revetments to preserve the largest area of fertile agricultural land. The results are especially valuable for river channel management, environmental planners and policy-makers, who deal with decisions regarding planning and the protection of bank erosion in areas of particular interest
Urbane promene i bezbednost u pograničnim gradovima i opštinama Srbije
Transformacija urbanih zona sa sobom povlači brojne promene. Jedna od njih je bezbednost stanovništva, koja je u savremeno doba izazov na globalnom nivou, kako u gradovima zemalja u razvoju tako i u gradovima razvijenih i uređenih država. Na nju utiču brojni urbani procesi i promene: naglo doseljavanje i odseljavanje stanovništva, migracije stanovništva unutar opština, nivo ekonomskog razvoja grada, strukture stanovništva (nivo obrazovanosti, stepen zaposlenosti), kao i način upravljanja urbanim zonama i suočavanje sa devijantnim oblicima ponašanja. Cilj ovog rada je dovođenje u vezu urbanih promena sa bezbednošću u pograničnoj oblasti Srbije. Zadatak rada je da se utvrdi teritorijalna distribucija bezbednosti u pograničnoj oblasti Srbije u zavisnosti od brojnih relevantnih pokazatelja urbanih promena kao što su: broj stanovnika, prosečna starost stanovnika, procenat stanovništva sa tercijarnim obrazovanjem i procenat urbanog stanovništva po opštinama. Kriterijum za utvrđivanje bezbednosti su statistički podaci o pravosnažno osuđenim punoletnim i maloletnim licima. Ovi parametri su podeljeni na krivična dela protiv života i tela, imovine, zdravlja ljudi, bezbednosti javnog saobraćaja i pravnog saobraćaja u slučaju punoletnih izvršilaca krivičnih dela. U slučaju maloletnih izvršilaca krivičnih dela, ona su podeljena na krivična dela protiv tela i života i krivična dela protiv imovine. Baza podataka je formirana na osnovu podataka objedinjenih iz publikacija Opštine i regioni u Republici Srbiji. U cilju relevantnosti datih podataka u radu je izvršena korekcija vrednosti u skladu sa brojem stanovnika pojedinačnih opština i gradova. Statistički podaci su prikazani za 2011. i 2022. godinu. Na osnovu korelacije između odabranih indikatora urbanih promena i podataka o broju osuđenih lica predočena je regionalna distribucija bezbednosnih uslova u pograničnoj zoni Srbije.Urednici: Svetlana Stanarević, Aleksandra Đuki
Determination of changes in the total amount of precipitation using the Mann-Kendall trend test in Central Serbia for the period from 1949 to 2018
This study presents the trend analysis for a specific category of variables, namely the average annual precipitation. The geospatial distribution of the obtained results in Central Serbia is visualized using Geographic Information System (GIS) numerical analysis. The primary objective of this study is to identify potential changes in the trends of average annual precipitation within the observed area. Methodologically, the Mann-Kendall trend test, trend equation, and trend magnitude were employed for trend analysis. The data used for the analysis were sourced from the Meteorological Yearbooks of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia, encompassing a total of 24 meteorological stations and spanning the period from 1949 to 2018. Based on the obtained results, statistically significant positive trends were observed in 17 time series, favoring the alternative hypothesis. Conversely, a decline in precipitation was noted in the remaining 7 time series. Among the time series, the largest increases in the total amount of precipitation over the past 69 years were recorded ont he area of the Dinaric Mountains. Conversely, the lowest increase in average precipitation was observed in the central part od the country.Furthermore, the time series with the greatest decrease in average annual precipitation was recorded ont he southeastern part of the country. In order to effectively address water-related challenges associated with precipitation fluctuations, it is essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of the shifting trends in precipitation over the region of Central Serbia
Demographic aspects of the planned resettlement of settlements in Lazarevac municipality
The planned resettlement of settlements in the course of the expansion of open-cast mining in the Kolubara mining basin has an impact on all aspects of social life in the municipality of Lazarevac. Primarily, this impact is reflected in the demographic development of the area. The expansion of coal mining and the immediate proximity to Belgrade, are the cause of significant demographic shifts.
The municipality has 33 settlements, a third of which are located in the exploitation area. The number of inhabitants in some settlements is drastically decreasing, and some of them are completely displaced, while on the other side, there is a sudden influx of population in the city of Lazarevac and the secondary centers of the municipality (Veliki Crljeni, Stepojevac), both from the municipal territory and from other parts of Serbia, motivated by the economic advantages of Lazarevac and its surroundings. This fact determines the trend of a constant increase in the number of inhabitants in urban settlements in all observed intercensal periods from 1948 to 2022, while the decline in the number of inhabitants in rural settlements has been observed since the 1981-1991 census period. The sudden increase in the number of inhabitants in urban settlements since the 1980s can be explained by the intensification of mining operations and the process of expropriation taking place in rural settlements. According to the last census in 2022 – 55,146 inhabitants live on the territory of Lazarevac municipality, of which 27,635 live in the only urban settlement in the municipality and 27,511 in rural settlements. The data indicates that for the first time, the urban population in the municipality exceeds the rural population.
This paper focuses on analyzing the impact of the decades-long development of mining activity on the territory of the municipality of Lazarevac on the population and the comprehensive development of the settlement, both in a positive and negative context. The research also focuses on the transformation of the settlement environment caused by the expansion of open-cast mining, with an emphasis on the changes in the demographic characteristics of the settlement. The paper is based on the analysis of data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, settlement regulation plans in the process of resettlement, the plan for the mining area of the Kolubara lignite basin and other sources relevant to the understanding of the given problem, as well as on the spatial representation of data using GIS software and tools. If we compare the dynamics of the expansion of the mines and the population of the Lazarevac municipality (before the start of open-cast mining and today), certain trends can be observed that make it possible to understand the demographic aspect of the process of planned displacement.Editors: Ivan Marinković, Marko Galja

Секундарно становање је несумњиво географски релевантна појава у простору, која се
манифестације као чврста, фиксна и очигледна функција рекреације, али истовремено и као облик
економске (туристичке) присутности у простору. Секундарно становање на територији општине
Књажевац има дугу традицију. Број других домова бележи континуирани раст више од 50 година,
без обзира на дугорочне економске кризе и регресивне друштвено-историјске процесе. У овом
раду, на основу пописне статистичке грађе истражујемо основне одлике феномена секундарног
становања фокусирајући се на просторну дистрибуцију и временску динамику развоја. Показатељи

Uncovering traffic accident patterns through the lense of spatial analysis
The number of traffic accidents in Serbia is decreasing but in certain areas and at a time, a higher number is recorded.
This paper deals with the analysis of traffic accident patterns in the Vojvodina Region (NUTS 2) in Serbia in the period
2016–2022. The temporal variability of traffic accidents was analyzed and then spatial clusters were identified using
Optimized Outlier Analysis. The paper adopted Space Time Pattern Mining analytics (Space Time Cube and Emerging
Hot Spot Analysis) to better understand the temporal evolution of the observed phenomenon in space. The results
showed that the number of traffic accidents varies over time and space. Eleven out of 16 categories of Hot and Cold
spots have been identified and their spatial grouping is noticeable. The findings of this study may be beneficial to traffic
managers and decision-makers in the creation and evaluation of traffic and other public policies at the local level
