Accepted Manuscript of an article: Ratkaj, I., Jocić, N.,& Budović, A.. (2024). Residential segregation in a radically changing urban context: experiences from Belgrade. in Geografiska Annaler: Series B, Human Geography Taylor & Francis Ltd.., 106(4), 365-386. https://doi.org/10.1080/04353684.2023.2226159
This article examines the historical perspective of residential segregation in Belgrade and addresses the contextual factors responsible for the dynamics of this segregation. The article considers the decline in social status from the centre to the periphery as the main feature of citywide segregation in Belgrade, along with perpetuated peripheral informality. It also examines the impact of large-scale socialist estates, which were intended to contribute to an egalitarian society and counteract residential segregation. To examine the long-term patterns of residential segregation in Belgrade, we use a combination of sources and research approaches, due to the incomparability and lack of statistical data. Recent changes in segregation patterns during the first two decades of the post-socialist period were additionally analysed at the census-unit level, using data on the education of the population as a proxy for their social status.Accepted Manuscript of an article: [https://doi.org/10.1080/04353684.2023.2226159]Related to published version: [https://gery.gef.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/1395
Beyond symbolic: the role of tourism ethnocentrism in domestic travel
As a positive ingroup bias, tourism ethnocentrism (TE) is considered a symbolic reason for travelling that drives tourists to choose domestic destinations as a way of supporting their country and its tourism industry. To provide an additional perspective on TE, through the lens of cognitive dissonance and rationalization, we studied its relationships with other factors that could affect tourists’ decision to travel domestically. The study was conducted in Serbia and used structural equation modelling to test these relationships. Our findings indicate that tourism xenophilia and tourism thalassophilia, defined as a preference for seaside summer holidays, do not affect TE and have only a limited negative impact on willingness to travel domestically. Constraints for travelling abroad and increased destination awareness as a consequence of the pandemic positively affect TE, thus questioning its purely symbolic nature and indicating that levels of TE in tourists could change due to external factors
Decentralization of the urban tourist zone of Zlatibor
Tourism cannot be imagined without preserved natural and cultural values, and it is important to raise awareness about the responsible business of the carriers of the tourist offer and the conscientious behavior of tourists. They should be directed towards insufficiently valorized potentials and thereby enable more even tourism development. The urban area of Zlatibor and the surrounding tourist values are an example of the necessary decentralization in order to prevent environmental degradation. The goal of scientific paper is twofold. The authors aim to point out the aggressive urbanization of Zlatibor, which greatly affects the once-preserved natural values and which directly conflicts with the application of the principles of sustainable development. Also, the goal is to present opportunities for the responsible development of tourism and complementary activities, which will undoubtedly encourage the conscientious construction of residential buildings and other facilities, important for the quality of life of the resident population. Establishing sustainability in mountains is of multiple importance, which can be observed at the local, regional, national and even global level. The analysis of planning documentation, available literature and satellite images determined the criteria on the basis of which the main analysis in the paper, SWOT analysis, was applied. Using Geographical Information Systems, the program QGIS 3.16. the analyzed data are shown cartographically
Geospatial modeling of wildfire susceptibility on a national scale in Montenegro: A comparative evaluation of F-AHP and FR methodologie
Wildfires pose a significant ecological, environmental, and socioeconomic challenge in southeastern Europe. The preservation of wildlands is not only essential but also a foremost priority for Montenegro, a country recognized as the world’s first ecological state. Consequently, the development of optimal methodologies and models is of paramount importance to enhance fire protection measures. With this objective in mind, this study strives to create a wildfire susceptibility model on a national scale for Montenegro. The study employed seven natural and anthropogenic causative criteria: vegetation type; aspect; slope; elevation; climate classification; distance from road; and population. The modeling process integrates both natural and anthropogenic causal criteria, employing the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (F-AHP) and Frequency Ratio (FR) within geoinformatics environment. The outcomes of the F-AHP model reveal that 72.84% of the total area is categorized as having high to very high susceptibility. Conversely, based on the FR model, only 29.07% of the area falls within these susceptibility levels. In terms of validation, the area under curvature values indicates good performance of the F-AHP model. In contrast, the FR model demonstrates poor performance. These novel findings, pertaining to Montenegro at a national scale, offer valuable insights for preemptive wildfire safeguarding efforts. Moreover, the methodologies employed, with necessary modifications, hold potential for application in geographically diverse regions
Adaptability of the urban environment to climate change
Sve učestalija pojava ekstremnih vremenskih događaja u vidu intenzivnih padavina, toplih talasa i suša posebno pogađaju urbane sredine. The increasingly frequent occurrence of extreme weather events in the form of heavy rainfall, heat waves and droughts has a particular impact on the urban environment. On the other hand, urban areas represent a significant factor in global warming due to intensive population growth and the development of all necessary functions. It is precisely for these reasons that urban areas are often placed at the center of climate adaptation and mitigation measures. Adapting urban areas to changing climatic conditions is the basis for reducing vulnerability and future risks. An indispensable part of this process is adaptive capacity, which represents the financial, technological and social ability and readiness of urban areas to cope with extreme climatic events. In this study, Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš were selected to determine the adaptive capacity. Existing measures and activities planned and proposed within strategic, planning and urban plans were identified, and an assessment of the capacity of institutions and existing infrastructure systems was made. The aim of the work is to identify the main deficits by analyzing the existing capacities and to show the importance of strengthening the adaptive capacities of urban areas in the process of adaptation to future climate change.Urednici: Jelena Marić, Jana Markovi
Comparative didactic and methodological analysis of the geography program for elementary school in Serbia and North Macedonia
The beginning of the 21st century is characterised by a digital society in which it is no longer sufficient for an individual to be able to read, write and calculate in order to be considered educated. The development of new technologies, especially information and communication technologies, has changed people's lives dramatically. They have also had an impact on the education system. Pupils are expected to have computer and media skills, the ability to learn independently, think critically, solve problems, work in a team, be creative and take initiative. The didactic-methodical analysis of the Geog-raphy Program for elementary schools will determine the extent to which it is possible to contribute to the development of the aforementioned skills in pupils. Geography programs are designed in a special way in all countries of the world. The aim of the paper is to analyze the Geography Program for primary schools in Serbia and North Macedonia in order to observe their similarities and differences. The results of the research indicate a significant similarity in the planned learning outcomes in both countries, while deviations are observed in the order of the studied teaching topics by class.Editor: Blagoja Markosk
Contemporary geopolitical and demographic processes in the Raška region and their impact on regional development
The Raška region is located in the southwestern part of Serbia. The territory of the Raška region includes six municipalities in Serbia: Novi Pazar, Tutin, Sjenica, Prijepolje, Priboj and Nova Varoš. In addition, it includes the area of five municipalities in Montenegro: Pljevlja, Bijelo Polje, Berane, Petnjica and Rožaje. For the purposes of this work, the area belonging to Serbia was analyzed. It has an area of 4,504 km2 and a total of 438 settlements. The geostrategic position of the Raška region has changed throughout history. It represents the historical core of the Serbian medieval state. The Serbian medie-val state got its name from this region. That is why it has always had great importance from the politi-cal, demographic and economic point of view. The area of the Raška region represents a multi-ethnic environment, which is its basic demographic feature. The paper analyzes its geopolitical position, as well as demographic changes in the period 1991-2022. The population dynamic, natural changes of the population and the changes in the national structure were analyzed. Demographic processes in the re-gion were influenced by several factors, the most important of which are settlement conditions, the level of economic development, and processes of urbanization and migration, especially in the rural-urban relationship. The Raška region has considerable natural potential that has not been adequately utilized for the purpose of economic development. Faster economic development will also condition the reduction of negative demographic processes, primarily emigration from rural areas.Editor: Blagoja Markosk
