Using open research practises to celebrate Team Science - A technician\u27s viewpoint
Open research practices are most often framed from an academic perspective. This talk provided a viewpoint from a technician working within a core facility. It reflected on some of the difficulties of incorporating Open Research in to practice when ‘ownership’ of data and protocols can be contested. It highlighted how we can use open research practice to celebrate the role of technicians within Team Science and help support the ‘Technician Commitment’ four target areas of technician visibility, recognition, career development and the future sustainability of technical skills and knowledge
Using CRediT to promote responsible research
Research culture is a complex concept, which includes the way we evaluate, support and reward quality in research and how we recognise varied contributions to a research activity. In 2023, the University of Edinburgh launched a Research Cultures Delivery Plan, which includes as an action point to promote guidance on authorship and acknowledgement in outputs and the adoption of a University-wide Fair Publication Policy. The acknowledgement of contributors is an essential part of responsible research and adopting the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), which consists of 14 roles that describe each contributor’s specific contribution to the scholarly output, supports the implementation of the Fair Publication Policy and the embedding of responsible research at the University.
The CRediT roles are not intended to define what constitutes authorship, but to capture all the work that allows scholarly publications to be produced. Using the taxonomy also brings a number of additional practical benefits to the research environment, including:
Enable visibility and recognition of the different contributions of researchers, particularly in multi-authored works – across all aspects of the research being reported (including data curation, statistical analysis, etc.)
Enable new indicators of research value, use and re-use, credit and attribution
Open Research Training: What, Who, When, Where, How, and Why
As open research (OR) becomes the norm in both research practice and policy we must ensure that postgraduate researchers (PGRs) are equipped with the skills to become Open Researchers.
Currently, OR support is uneven with the focus on specific fields or even research groups. As a result, PGRs face disparities and a ‘postcode lottery’ in quantity and quality of training.
We asked 7 PGRs from across all 3 of University of Edinburgh’s colleges to tell us about their OR experiences and help us formulate recommendations for how we can best support them and the fellow students in the future
An instantly applicable machine learning model for extraprostatic extension prediction in prostate cancer: A post-hoc analysis of the RAPID 68Ga-PSMA PET/MRI trial
Radical prostatectomy (RP) is a common first-line treatment for patients with localized prostate cancer (PCa), with nerve-sparing techniques recommended to minimize adverse effects on quality of life. Accurate pre-operative detection of extraprostatic extension (EPE) remains difficult, often resulting in suboptimal treatment choices. Machine learning (ML) has the potential to improve pre-operative EPE detection through the integration of multimodal data, but its clinical adoption is hindered by implementation complexities and explainability issues.
This study conducted a post-hoc analysis of a prospective clinical trial (NCT02659527) involving patients who underwent [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET/MRI from 2014 to 2019. Only the clinically used parameters were collected, including PET-derived features, blood-based markers, histology-derived parameters, and patient demographics. ML models were developed using either only non-invasive features or a combination of non-invasive and invasive features for EPE detection and were compared to conventional PET image readings.
Among the 77 patients included in the study, 44 (57%) had EPE based on post-surgical findings. The ML models outperformed traditional PET image readings in diagnostic accuracy, with the explainable boosting machine (EBM) model achieving an AUC of 0.88. The ML model incorporating invasive features showed superior predictive ability for EPE compared to visual clinical assessments (AUC 0.88 vs. 0.71, p 0.02), while the difference between the ML model with non-invasive features and clinical assessments was not significant (AUC 0.83 vs. 0.71, p 0.34).
Explainable ML models utilizing routinely acquired clinical data can greatly enhance the pre-operative detection of EPE in PCa patients, potentially leading to more accurate clinical staging, better treatment decisions, and improved patient outcomes.

A JWST Pure-Parallel Search for the First Galaxies With PANORAMIC
The James Webb Space Telescope offers unparalleled capabilities for observing the most distant objects in the universe, allowing us to study the first galaxies to form. In this work, the Lyman-break technique and spectral energy distribution fitting were used to analyse the JWST PANORAMIC survey and identify 26 robust galaxy candidates at redshifts greater than 9.5, including three around redshift 14.5. These candidates will make excellent targets for follow-up spectroscopy. The derived UV luminosity function at z = 14.5 is consistent with literature determinations at similar redshifts and implies a modest evolution in the number density of galaxies from z ∼ 14 to z ∼ 11. Future research based on this work could determine when the first galaxies formed, confirming or challenging current theories of cosmic evolution

“Our American Optimism”: Race, Recognition, and Belonging in Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely: An American Lyric
This paper explores Claudia Rankine’s representation of the feelings of racialisation in her 2004 poetry collection Don’t Let Me Be Lonely: An American Lyric. Contextualising this work within wider debates in Afropessimist philosophy, it considers how the poet’s portrayal of emotional pain, depression, and numbness exemplify a form of ‘social death’ instigated by the ubiquitous violence of antiblackness. Through close readings of select sequences, it argues that Rankine frames death as an ongoing structure of African American experience, rather than a singular event. In turn, this paper also considers how her innovative and hybrid “American Lyric” form functions to create a new grammar for Black self-expression in an ostensibly ‘post-race’ culture that obfuscates contemporary systems of racial inequality. It argues that Rankine’s collection cultivates an ethics of attention to the experiences and pain of others, offering poetry as a form of “exhausted hope” to challenge the dehumanising force of White supremacy
Report: Peering into the Prehistoric Past of Bandhavgarh National Park, central India
This paper reports on recent discoveries of prehistoric findspots inside and around the Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh, central India). These discoveries dramatically push the antiquity of a human presence in this region back from their known existence during the historic period into the prehistoric epoch. This also means that it was prehistoric people who were the first forest dwellers of the national park. The lithic scatters are marked by a variety of microlithic forms, with a strong possibility of an older, Upper Palaeolithic presence. The localities are several and are spread over about sixty square kilometres, within the core and buffer zones of the national park, some of them being close to different stretches of the Charanganga river. They suggest a prolonged hominin presence here, in time and space. One of these areas in particular, the Jwalamukhi Ashram site-complex (JMP) with multiple localities that have yielded early remains, holds immense potential for understanding the nature of prehistoric occupation in this region, their possible dates and their palaeoenvironmental contexts. Further, discoveries within the core region of the national park point to a deeper, and possibly different, relationship between prehistoric human populations in the forest, in relation to the known historical archaeological record in this region. Future work at the region will delve into characterising the nature of prehistoric occupation in the region through a study of the lithic assemblages noted and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction on the basis of the study of various environmental proxies

Community Engagement: we hear it a lot, particularly from politicians when talking about controversial topics and projects: “We engaged with the community, and this is what they wanted”. In tourism, it can be used to find the balance between the social impacts of development – ensuring that what we, as development practitioners, do is in the community’s best interests. Responsible tourism looks at the social, economic and environmental factors; one of these is objective – money – you can count it. Another of these is theoretically measurable on both macro and micro levels, though tough to define - environmental. The final is very subjective and nearly impossible to measure with any proper level of accuracy – social. That’s where community engagement comes in
