    No full text
Populist leaders have been gaining momentum in countries around the world in recent years, coming to power with great momentum and quickly losing support when their big promises fail to materialize. One of these leaders is Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who discussed a lot with the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh. There are some populist strategy areas in Pashinyan’s policies. His promises of economic reforms and anti-corruption measures resonated with the public but implementing these reforms without causing economic instability has proven challenging. This research argues that his communication style, which often appeals directly to the people and bypasses traditional political channels, is characteristic of populist leaders. This study discusses that his populist rhetoric, particularly regarding Armenia's conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, has exacerbated tensions and hindered diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. All of these issues are explored with analysing Pashinyan’s political discourse in this article. The main purpose of this article is both to show that Pashinyan's populism is a unique type of populism different from other types of populism and to fill the gap in the literature on populism in Armenian domestic politics

This paper analyzes tarpaulins produced for the Kinabayo Festival (KF) in Dapitan City every July 25 in commemoration of the Moro invasion heroism of the horse-riding apparition carrying a sword, Senyor Santiago. The KF has instigated to be a religious spectacle among Dapitan aficionados, but through the years, it diversely evolved into a social and economic rather a historical, cultural and spiritual event. To qualitatively analyze how visual elements in KF tarpaulins contribute to this shift in perception, tarpaulins designed every July from 2013 to 2018 were purposively-chosen and subjected to Multimodal Discourse Analysis, guided by Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar to interpret conveyed meanings. The study revealed that the deployment of dynamic modes reflected in KF tarpaulins highlights the city’s glorious history and culture and picturesque landscape and landmarks entailing vitality, innovation and modernization effectively market Dapitan City. However, the constructed meanings within these images frame the KF as a social and economic affair rather than a religious event. The study underscores the role of artists as empowered cultural mediators who navigate between traditional moral sensibilities and progressive artistic expression. To enhance the effectiveness of festival promotions, the local government unit (LGU) or relevant offices, such as the city tourism department, should consider commissioning artists who are not only skilled in graphic design but also visually literate in semiotics. Artists reveal moral sensibilities and cultural norms likewise conservative, but progressive and attentive making them empowered information producers, however, to serve the purpose, the local government unit (LGU) or relevant offices such as the city tourism may put emphasis on commissioning artists who are not only credentialed in graphics and designing but also visually literate who can produce a meaningful visual text in shaping the local culture to significantly promote agreement between and among consumers and producers. Alternatively, seeking consultation from a semiotician before production could ensure that the visual narratives align with the intended cultural messaging, fostering a more meaningful connection between producers and audiences

This study investigated the effects of using the mother tongue as an instructional tool on the English performance of elementary students using a quasi-experimental design. The research aimed to evaluate whether the use of mother tongue in teaching English concepts significantly improves learners’ classroom test scores. A total of 59 samples were selected from two classes in a public school in the Southern part of the Philippines, with one class receiving the mother tongue as the medium of instruction in teaching English and the other as the control group using the traditional methods.  Pretest and posttest performances were assessed using a teacher-made instrument with 30 questions. Data analysis involved frequency count, weighted mean, t-tests for dependent samples, and z-tests. The pretest results for both groups were similar, showing fair performance. However, the posttest results indicated a significant improvement in the learners who received mother-tongue-based instruction compared to those taught using traditional English teaching methods. Initially, both groups struggled with retaining facts and vocabulary. Despite this, the study found that using the mother tongue as an instructional tool greatly improved academic performance in English. The study recommends teacher training to effectively incorporate the mother tongue into English instruction, consistent use of the mother tongue, local contextualization of English vocabulary, and a gradual introduction of English alongside the mother tongue. Overall, the study emphasizes the positive impact of the mother tongue on English proficiency and offers practical strategies for integrating it into English language teaching

Power, Protectionism, and the Global Economy: A Political Economy Analysis of the United States of America–China Tariff Conflict between 2020 and 2025

This paper examines the US- China tariff war (2020-2025) in the terms of political economy exploring the clash of forces, protectionism, and world exchange activity. The study takes place to gain insights into the geopolitical rationale of the tariff actions, examine the consequences of the tariffs on domestic and global economies, and the appraisals of its long-term consequences on multilateral trade regulations. This paper develops a theoretical framework grounded in the political economy of trade policy that relies upon protectionist theories (e.g., strategic trade, rent-seeking) as well as power-based theories (realism, hegemonic stability theory). The results show that the tariff war upset world value chains, increased uncertainty in trade activities and enhanced the process of shifting global economic power to regionalism. Both countries, the US and China experienced negative economic implications in their trade policies, but the policies were geared towards local political interests and structural strategic interests. The crisis also demonstrated the flaws of multilateral agencies such as WTO and increased a trend towards bilateral and regional trade agreements. Finally, the research emphasizes the fact that better balance should be struck on a more geopolitical-based, economically resilient and technically sovereign-based approach to international trade. It is necessary to study new trade wars, online protectionism, and how trade collides with environmental regulations in the future

The Sixth Sense and Innate Wisdom: Clinical Value in Rupert Brooke’s “There’s Wisdom in Women”

    No full text
Contemporary counseling for women and mothers includes two psychological exigences that women face: parenting and personal value. In particular, the concept of a mother’s intuition is seen as both scientifically possible and mythical, often framed as a potential ‘sixth sense.’ In consideration of scientific credence on the biological and psychological link between mothers and children, amid the growth of women often adopting a sense of defeatism and self-criticism, this study considers the celebratory intuitive capacity of women in poetry. Centering the study on the applicable value in a therapeutic reading of Rupert Brooke’s poem There’s Wisdom in Women, the poem offers potentiality for women to reflect and trust intuitive judgment, thereby situating personal value as instinctual and biologically empowering, especially for mothers, as reflected in Brooke’s poem

Democratic Backsliding in West Africa: An Analysis of ECOWAS's Response to Military Coups

This paper is a research on democratic backsliding in West Africa, in which the author examines how Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has responded to the recent military coups in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Niger. Using the methodological approach of qualitative case study, the study finds the problems of governance failures, socio-economic challenges, and institutional fragility to be the main factors that cause the decline of democracy. The approaches employed by ECOWAS, which include diplomacy, sanctions, and in few cases, military intervention have produced mixed results, with partial success in The Gambia and a history of inability to stop the violence in other cases. The discussion highlights the weaknesses in the operations of ECOWAS such as weak enforcement capacity, internal divisions and political will among member states. It is suggested to strengthen institutional frameworks, improve early warning systems, increase regional cohesion, and intensify civic participation. The paper also highlights the inseparability of international relations in boosting the democratic efforts of ECOWAS. This study advances a better comprehension of the role of regionalism and democracy in West Africa and provides policy implications to decision-makers and stakeholders, who strive to promote and maintain democracy in the region
