Leafing through Theatre: Touch, Paper, and Ink in the Life of a Drama, from Kochanowski’s "The Dismissal of the Greek Envoys" to Mickiewicz’s "Forefathers’ Eve"
Porządek wywodu wytyczają kolejne praktyki dawnych producentów i odbiorców zapisu dramatu: czerpanie papieru i drukowanie, oprawianie tomów, ludyczne użycie prasy drukarskiej, porządkowanie księgozbiorów oraz własnoręczne adnotowanie gotowych przekazów. While research on drama has usually focused on its stage reception, in early modern culture other forms of the social presence of theatrical texts were important as well. The article examines the way authors and readers engaged with dramatic writings between the late 16th and the mid 19th century. Tactile and visual impressions induced by the material properties of the manuscript or print played an important role in these experiences. The argument is organised around the various practices of old-time producers and recipients of dramatic writings: paper making and printing, bookbinding, the secular use of the printing press, organising book collections, and annotating the texts by hand. The article concludes with a description of practices related to the aestheticisation of written drama during social situations of a performative and sometimes even quasi-theatrical nature
“A balloon for St. Stanisław’s Day:” The Commission of National Education vis-à-vis Public Spectacles and School Theatre
Artykuł opisuje stosunek Komisji Edukacji Narodowej, pierwszej w Polsce państwowej władzy sprawującej zwierzchność nad szkołami, do widowisk, w tym teatru szkolnego. This article discusses how the National Education Commission, the first Polish state authority supervising schools, approached spectacles, including school theatre. Scientific spectacles, such as demonstrations of science experiments, public lectures featuring experiments, and even student exams open to the public, were highly valued and encouraged from both college and secondary school professors. This was in line with the general interests of the era (balloons and electric machines in particular sparked curiosity) and gave schools the opportunity to build a positive image. Meanwhile, school theatre, which had been an important aspect of Jesuit and Piarist schools for two centuries, raised objections from the Commission, which does not mean that schools strictly complied with the bans on organising performances. The article analyses source texts such as normative acts (laws, instructions), school reports, periodicals, correspondence, and dissertations
Education in the 21st century. A colourful school is the answer to the crisis of imagination and creativity
We are surrounded by students – visionaries. Their talents remain undiscovered in schools that limit the funds allocated for creative activities. Students, because of the routinization of teaching, are less likely to develop the creativity that can be stimulated in a properly prepared space. Globalization, prompted by the development of technology, is affecting the creativity crisis by reconstructing organizations. Companies are beginning to require employees to think outside the box. It is, researchers have deduced, the components of creativity such as imagination, art and freedom that are becoming the drivers of education, allowing the training of innovators whose skills provide, among other things, the ability for organizations to stand out in the market.
This article discusses the crisis of creativity and imagination, as well as their role in education. The relationship between creativity and knowledge is discussed, supplemented by a consideration of the importance of art in the process of knowledge acquisition and children’s development. The author cites creative solutions of schools that can be and are used in early childhood education, among others

Learning to survive and thrive: How non-formal education transforms the quality of adult life?
The idea of non-formal education is linked to the fulfilment of the needs of adults to acquire new knowledge and skills and to develop attitudes that will help them function more easily in the modern world. Education is associated with learning in schools and universities, and adult lifelong learning is perceived similarly. What prompts adults to return to the experiences they acquired while following traditional formal education paths? What motivates them to deliberately resume the learning process, already in a much different form of structured adult education? The most pertinent question is which competences acquired in the post-school educational activity support the daily functioning of adults
Workers’ Earnings Losses Due to the Low-Carbon Transition. Theory and Application in a CGE Model
Designing a just transition that leaves no one behind necessitates an understanding of the potential economic costs of this transition for particularly vulnerable individuals. In this article, we analyse the costs of transitioning from high-carbon to less-carbon-intensive sectors for workers. First, we discuss potential reasons for such costs. Second, we employ a microeconomic model to demonstrate that information on the magnitude of these costs can be derived from the empirically observed sectoral labour supply curves. We then illustrate how the system of supply curves can be integrated into a standard Computable General Equilibrium framework. We calculate the potential earnings losses incurred by workers during the transition and compare them to the size of the Just Transition Fund by the European Commission. Finally, we employ the model to estimate the transition costs for Poland. In 2040, the loss for workers due to climate policy is approximately $1 billion, equivalent to 0.5% of total labour compensation. The state could use a Just Transition Fund or allocate a portion of its carbon tax revenue to compensate for these losses, thus reducing the resistance of the most affected workers to more ambitious climate policies
International cooperation in countering global threats
The aim of the article is to analyze the role of international cooperation in counteracting global threats and to assess the effectiveness of the actions taken. The first part presents the role of international organizations in ensuring global security, with particular emphasis on their structures, initiatives and the effectiveness of their activities. The second part focuses on regional and bilateral cooperation, analyzing its impact on the stabilization of regions and the effectiveness of actions taken in the context of geopolitical challenges. The last part identifies key barriers to effective international cooperation, as well as indicates the prospects for its development in the context of dynamic global changes. The research problem was formulated: What are the main challenges and prospects for the development of international cooperation in combating global threats? The research hypothesis assumes: The effectiveness of international cooperation in combating global threats is limited by political divergences, lack of uniform regulations and insufficient resources, but the development of technology and the strengthening of regional and global coordination mechanisms may contribute to its improvement. Research methods such as literature analysis, systemic method, comparative approach and case studies of selected international organizations and initiatives were used
The Sejm of 1646: Comments on the parliamentary procedure
The Sejm of year 1646 was one of the most difficult during the reign of king Władysław IV, especially due to the argument that took place between the political forces over the monarch’s resignation from the war against the Ottoman Porte. Due to the fact that this problem had been presented in the historiography, the purpose of this article was to present the Sejm as an institution. King’s attitude, disputes over the issue of Trubczewsk and the activity of dissidents at the end of the Sejm’s session led to the parliamentary obstruction. It was particularly disturbed by deputies having the support of important magnates, the passivitas state introduced by them could be broken only by agreeing to their demands. During the Sejm, one of the deputies also left the chamber once, but the remaining deputies showed concern for maintaining the parliamentary procedure. The deputies tried to deal with the growing problems by convening the various committees
Choreopolitics and Haunted Bodies
The aim of this article is, first, to illuminate the history of Polish dance by examining how contemporary choreographers narrate that past in their performances, making significant breaks with tradition while simultaneously reinterpreting it in various ways. Second, it seeks to highlight the analogies between the situation of independent dance in Poland in the twenty-first century and the place of modern dance during the interwar period. The author analyses performances by Wojciech Grudziński (Threesome), Edyta Kozak (Dancing for You Longer than One Minute), and Iwona Pasińska (Ostatnia niedziela), which she interprets as examples of what André Lepecki terms ‘choreopolitics.’ These are performances in which artists critically examine the official narratives of ballet and dance theatre, deconstructing and rewriting their archives with regard to what is absent or distorted within them. The author demonstrates how contemporary choreographers participate in shaping not only the future but also the past of dance
The Politics of Meat. On Katarzyna Kozyra’s Pyramid of Animals
In July 2024, artist Elwira Sztetner and researcher Katarzyna Lewandowska conducted an artistic action at Zachęta Art Gallery regarding Katarzyna Kozyra’s Pyramid of Animals, demanding burial of the animal remains. Their petition referenced decolonial practices and criticism of ‘speciesism.’ Pyramid was Kozyra's 1993 thesis work, becoming one of the most important pieces in Polish 1990s art. By using dead animals instead of sculpting their forms she caused one of the biggest scandals in Polish art after 1989. This text by returning to the moment when the sculpture was created and the atmosphere of the 1990s seeks to show that violence inscribed in Kozyra’s act was present in the experience of the transition especially for women. The intimate relation between meat and feminine embodiment built by Kozyra in the Pyramid and in another work – Olimpia, is understood in the categories of non-representation and work of affect that makes this history contiguous with the present moment
