    Encouraging Student Attendance and Engagement in Lectures & Workshops in the Pre- and Post-Covid World

    In the post-Covid era, second year chemistry lectures are fully flipped with all content being online. All the live lecture sessions are used for group work and are fully interactive. Students have agency in the lectures by directing what is taught in these student-led sessions. Students find the sessions very engaging and respond positively. In particular they value the agency they are given. In a second study that took place pre-Covid, workshops are changed from 1-hour to 2-hour sessions but with half the number and a much simplified timetable for students. Group work and peer-assessment with marking criteria help make the sessions engaging for students and more useful. The increased level of attendance from less than 20% to more than 70% (in the best case) is evidence of increased value to the students and success of the new format

    Spinning Out Greentech Start-ups

    The Paris Agreement has made combating climate change a priority and has incentivised innovationfor the greentech industry. Higher education institution[s] (HEI[s]) play an important role in fueling this innovation by developing disruptive technologies and support the creation of start-up companies that take the risk to bring these technologies to the market. The successful spinning out of such start-ups relies on the HEIs nurturing anecosystem with multiple actors as well as internal mechanisms to transfer such technologies to the start-up. HEIs have dedicated offices involved in technology transfer (TTO) that provide an interface between all the different actors (inventors, founders, start-up, investors, etc.). The TTO of an HEI also plays a central role in the technology transfer by providing the licence agreements granting start-ups the rights to use a technology developed by the HEI. This review summarises the role of a TTO and the practice of making the licensing process as transparent as possible for start-up founders and investors

    Anthelminthic Veterinary Medicines Interactions with the Soil Microbiota

    Anthelminthics (AHs) are used to control gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in productive animals. They are rapidly excreted by animals, ending up in soil through direct deposition of animal dung or application of animal excreta as manures. Most environmental research on AHs has focused on their toxicity to aquatic organisms and soil fauna while their interactions with the soil microbiota, a key component of a functioning soil ecosystem, have been overlooked. In this article, we summarize current knowledge on the interactions of Ahs with the soil (micro) biota, we highlight recent evidence for the toxicity of AHs on soil microorganisms and discuss those results in the frame of the current environmental risk assessment (ERA) of veterinary medicines

    Pesticides in Agricultural Soils: Major Findings from Various Monitoring Campaigns in Switzerland

    Synthetic pesticides are widely applied in modern agriculture, where they are used against diseases, pests, and weeds to secure crop yield and quality. However, their intensive application has led to widespread contamination of the environment, including soils. Due to their inherent toxicity, they might pose a risk to soil health by causing harm to non-target organisms and disrupting ecosystem services in both agricultural and other exposed soils. Following the Swiss National Action Plan on the reduction of pesticide risks, Agroscope has conducted several soil monitoring studies that are briefly presented here. All of them resort to different multi-residue trace analytical approaches to simultaneously quantify up to about 150 modern pesticides by either accelerated solvent, or Quick, Easy, Cheap, Efficient, Rugged, Safe (QuEChERS) extraction, followed by separation and detection with liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. While partly still in progress, our investigations led to the following major findings this far: Multiple pesticides are commonly present in soils, with individual concentrations in agricultural soils often reaching up to a few tens of µg/kg. Pesticide occurrence and concentrations in agricultural soils primarily depend on land use, land use history and cultivated crops. Pesticides can prevail much longer than predicted by their half-lives, and were found in soils even decades after conversion from conventional to organic farming. Corresponding residual fractions can be in the order of a few percent of the originally applied amounts. We further found negative associations of pesticide residues with the abundance of beneficial soil life, underpinning their potential risk to the fertility of agricultural soils. Traces of pesticides are also detected in soils to which they were never applied, indicating contamination, e.g., via spray drift or atmospheric deposition. These results confirm the general notion of both scientists and legislators that prospective risk assessments (RA; as executed during registration and use authorization) should be confirmed and adjusted by retrospective RA (e.g., by environmental monitoring studies of currently used compounds) to jointly lead to an overall reduced environmental risk of pesticides
