Ilmac Conference and SCS Activities at Ilmac 2023: Ilmac 2023, Messe Basel, 26.-28. September 2023. Platform for Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biotechnology

Ilmac has its origins in the Swiss trade fair for international laboratory, measurement technology and automation in chemistry, which has been taking place since 1959. Today, the chemical and life science brand connects the industry both physically and digitally. With the performance promise “Inspiring the Future of Chemistry and Life Sciences”, it encourages the development of new ideas and solutions and presents trends and innovations by research and industry in important locations such as Basel and Lausanne. The SCS, as the initial founder of the fair, is partnering with Messe Schweiz and coordinates the collaboration with society partners and the Universities of Applies Sciences. The SCS and its partner societies, SVC and SBA, are also the official organizer of the Ilmac Conference

Alles richtig – nichts verstanden? Wie der Fokus des Unterrichts auf das Verstehen gelenkt werden kann

This article presents ideas from our educational practice in chemistry teaching, focusing on understanding rather than just learning by heart. We recommend always asking students to justify statements, to use chemical formulae as a starting point and aid to reasoning, and to require as little factual knowledge as possible. Because tasks with calculations, formulae and reaction equations can be solved in a recipe-like manner, they should be supplemented with comprehension questions. If students describe processes with sketches at model level and formulate explanations in their own words, it becomes particularly clear whether they have understood the concept

    Connecting Chemical Worlds – Context-based Learning Co-developed

Chemistry as well as chemistry education often raise two different perceptions among non-experts: Chemistry (education) provides spectacular phenomena, experiments and entertainment, but is also perceived as incorporating high levels of risk and many different facts and rules. Students and teachers get more authentic insights and perceptions of the broad spectrum of science tasks, activities and people when working together, whereas scientists can better understand teachers´ and students´ perspectives with regard to content interests and learning processes at school and beyond

Aiming for More Sustainable Cross-Coupling Chemistry by Employing Single-Atom Catalysis on Scale

    Get PDF
Scaling up syntheses from mg to kg quantities is a complex endeavor. Besides adapting laboratory protocols to industrial processes and equipment and thorough safety assessments, much attention is paid to the reduction of the process’ environmental impact. For processes including transition metal catalyzed steps, e.g. cross-coupling chemistry, this impact strongly depends on the identity of the metal used. As such, a key approach is the replacement of single-use with reusable heterogeneous catalysts. Transition metal single-atom heterogeneous catalysts (SAC), a novel class of catalytic materials, might exhibit all the necessary properties to step up to this task. This article shall discuss current applications of SAC in cross-coupling chemistry from the point of a process chemist and shed light on the NCCR Catalysis contribution to the field. Investigations of the stability-activity-selectivity relationship of SACs in combination with early-stage life-cycle assessments (LCA) of potential processes lay the foundation for large-scale application tailored catalyst synthesis. Ultimately, prevailing challenges are highlighted, which need to be addressed in future research
