Świadectwa wojny czeczeńskiej w krótkich formach narracyjnych (na przykładzie utworów Piotra Wajla i Arkadija Babczenki)
The aim of the article is to compare and analyse short narrative forms about the First Chechen War 1994-1996. The source material consists of essays by Pyotr Vail (The Map of the Motherland) and the series of miniature stories by Arkady Babchenko (Ten Episodes about the War). The study took into account genre differences between reportage, essay, and short story, as well as between narrative techniques and biographical context. The journalistic and essayistic narrative of Vail (1949-2009) and the short stories of Babchenko (b. 1977) create the dual voice of an observer and a participant in war. The works by both authors are examples of reliable literary testimonies about the war in Chechnya. W badaniu uwzględniono kwestie gatunkowe (reportaż, esej, opowiadanie), techniki narracyjne i kontekst biograficzny.
In the development of every language, key figures emerge who are remembered for their contribution and recognized through the written word they left behind. When it comes to the Macedonian language, among the many of names that have appeared throughout history, one stands out in particular— Krste Petkov Misirkov (1874–1926). He represents a vital link between his predecessors of the nineteenth century and the future Macedonians of the twentieth century. With his seminal work “On Macedonian Affairs”, publishedat the beginning of the twentieth century (Sofia, 1903), Misirkov established the framework for the codified Macedonian language. His scientific thought also served as the driving force behind the creation of the first scholarly journal in the Macedonian language, “Vardar” (Odesa, 1905). In contrast, this year marks seven decades of scholarly research conducted within the Institute for the Macedonian Language “Krste Misirkov”—the only scientific institution in Macedonia founded exclusively for research on the Macedonian language. The aim of this paper is to connect Misirkov’s scientific ideas with the activities of the Institute, which continues to embody his guiding principles throughout its seven decades of existence.
The subject of this article is a supplement to Andrzej Faber‘s eighteenth-century Polish-German Celaryus, namely an alphabetical index of German words („Register der deutschen Stamm- und einfachen Wörter“). The article characterises the Register in detail and points out its advantages and shortcomings. The article also attempts to answer the question of whether the Register can be regarded as a simple form a German-Polish dictionary
Learner and teacher perceptions of Task-Based Language Teaching in adventure education. A design-based study
Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has been widely researched, as such and at the intersection of TBLT and Computer-Assisted Language Learning. There is also a vast body of literature – though perhaps less research – in the area of another TBLT enhancement: Task-Based Critical Pedagogy (TBCP). However, there are scarcely any publications on the application of such pedagogy in other contexts, for example, adventure education. This paper aims to fi ll in this void. Following the design-based research (DBR) methodology, it describes a task-based English class implemented aboard a tall ship during a trans-Atlantic crossing.
The article focuses on the learner and teacher perceptions of the pedagogy applied and its outcomes, including eff ects that Biesta and Säfström (2011) call dissensus – (unexpected) outcomes. Data was collected through ethnographic class observation, interviews, a survey and student output analysis. The study participants were 36 students taking part in the trans-Atlantic crossing. Based on the analysis of the data gathered, it is postulated that task-based language pedagogy is a promising solution in the context given, with special regard to its infl uence on student well-being
The aim of the present paper is to analyse, how the marking of the genitive of the singular nouns using the strong marker -s is treated in practice grammars for German as a foreign language. In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in the variation of the strong genitive marker of the singular noun. So far little attention has been paid to the addressing this problem in the practice grammars intended for foreigners learning German. In this study 20 practice grammars are analysed in this regard. After introductory remarks, practice grammars are characterised as a type of grammar books. In the next section the examined collection of grammars is presented in more detail and in section 4 the aspects of strong genitive marking to be discussed are outlined. The analysis of the collected material in section 5 is followed by some concluding remarks and an outlook in section 6
From Opitz to Hunold—Programmatic Approaches to Establishing German National Literature in Lyric Anthologies
In the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous German-language poetry anthologies were created, whose prefaces, with a strongly emphasized cultural-patriotic interest, consistently advocated strongly for the establishment of German as a language of poetry. They all refer to Opitz, cite ancient, contemporary foreign, as well as German role models, and contain poetological instructions for a future generation of poets. This article attempts to highlight the programmatic character of the prefaces and illustrate their contribution to the development of German national literature using several examples, including Opitz, Neukirch, Hunold, Weichmann, among others
Zwei Tagungen der Akademie Mitteleuropa e.V. in der Bildungs- und Begegnungsstätte „Der Heiligenhof“ in Bad Kissingen – ein Bericht
„Wichry Smoczogór” Wita Szostaka jako próba stworzenia współczesnego mitu
The article discusses the role of mountain spaces in fantasy literature from the perspective of mythographic criticism. Considering the insights of Carl Gustav Jung, Joseph Campbell, Mircea Eliade or Manfred Lurker and other scholars of mythical thinking, the author shows fantasy literature as a contemporary counterpart of mythical creation, which enables reader to experience the hidden contents of the human unconscious, impossible to articulate rationally. Author also recalls J.R.R. Tolkien’s reflections on fairy tales and mythopoetics, noting the important psychological role played by escapism in such texts. In particular, the article focuses on the analysis and interpretation of Wit Szostak’s novel Wichry Smoczogór, which is part of a series about Smoczogóry (Dragon Mountains), and which is treated as an attempt to create a contemporary myth. The universe created by Szostak is rooted primarily in the folklore of the Carpathian Mountains, but one can also see in it inspirations from Romantic and Young Polish literature, Christian cosmology, Greek mythology or intuitionist philosophy. Szostak’s novel is shown to be primarily erudite, combining important cultural motifs associated with the mountains, but lacking the basic characteristics of mythical stories usually distinguished in a monomyth structure. However, Wichry Smoczogór proves the vitality of mountain motifs in fantasy literature
Semantyka (bez)czasu w literackich światach Clive’a Staplesa Lewisa
This article offers a reconstruction of C.S. Lewis’s perception of the category of time in the context of the following works: The Cosmic Trilogy, Till We Have Faces, and The Great Divorce. Due to C.S. Lewis’s worldview, the article focuses mainly on theological and ancient philosophical concepts of time and eternity; it also refers to epistemology and the philosophy of language. The starting point is the cultural conditioning of the perception of time, which is of particular importance in relation to Lewis, who was shaped by Judeo-Christian, classical, and medieval influences. In his works, he combines concepts of the linearity of time in a degenerative model—although sanctified through the Passion of the Christ — with the cyclical nature of time characteristic of traditional religiosity, which introduces hope for renewal. The author attempts to show how Lewis’s philosophical explorations translate into the way he constructs his fictional world, including the interpretation and impact of the idea of time. One of the most important elements of the analysis is the category of ‘now,’ presented by Lewis as a form of timeless fullness of existence. He expresses this idea both explicitly (in nonfiction and intimate texts) and implicitly (in descriptions contained in fictional works and the language used in them). Lewis’s specific cognitive attitude fundamentally influences his creative choices, including genre choices, making his novels and short stories a testimony to the philosophical, transgressive reflection on the nature of the real world through the viewing of imaginary worlds
„Chciałbym wyglądać jak z Manowara”. Sposoby i funkcje obrazowania ciała w tekstach piosenek zespołu Nocny Kochanek
This article presents an analysis of the literary body image in song lyrics by the Polish satirical band Nocny Kochanek. The group plays classic heavy metal, but their lyrics treat issues characteristic of the genre with self-referential humour. These include, among others, the rock and roll lifestyle and its connection to sex, which clearly implies issues related to the human body. The playful and comical nature of the music of Nocny Kochanek has a significant influence on the methods employed to describe the human body in their lyrics.
The aim of this paper is to present, using selected examples of songs by Nocny Kochanek, what kind of body image do they employ and what functions it serves in expressing the songs’ ‘message.’ The study discusses elements of linguistic humour used in the description of the human body and parodic transformations of typical heavy metal themes related to corporeality. The analysis reveals that, although the group’s humorous oeuvre results in them engaging with certain body image-related issues — including taboo subjects linked with physiology and sexuality — in a comical and exaggerated fashion, a closer look at the composition of the songs shows that the humour is often subordinated to a more refined goal of satire, and even social critique
