Wątki muzyczne w najnowszych serialach streamingowych
This article is devoted to musical themes appearing in a selection of recent (as of 2025) streaming series. These works demonstrate a clearly discernible shift in the ways that the medium employs musical scores. One apparent reason for this shift is the shortening of opening sequences, which are now often limited to brief animated skits, at times lasting mere seconds — which severely reduces the viewer’s exposure to a musical score. Another reason must be considered in a broader context: the elevation of the once-overlooked ‘couch entertainment medium’ into a genuine artistic genre. This change encourages the viewer to pay attention to artistic means that exist outside of the plot — be they visual or, more to the point here, aural. In most series produced in the 1980s and 1990s, the opening sequence played a central role, embedding both the musical theme and the appearance of the actors (and characters) in the audience’s memory. Today, musical openings — scored by the show’s main theme — are increasingly relics of the past, joining the growing catalogue of cultural retro-objects. Songs used in contemporary streaming series are not selected at random — they are deliberately chosen by the producers. These musical choices play an important role in shaping the narrative world, as they often reflect the characters’ inner lives or act as commentary on the unfolding story. The article focuses on musical score in the crime series Forst (2024), which features a wide range genres, from mainstream pop, through folk and soft rock, to more indie-aligned dream pop. In some cases, the visual storytelling that accompanies certain songs (such as Wonderful Life) closely mirrors the form of a music video, as it is similarly dominated by fragmentation, multiple shots, and contrast. This interconnection is a pointed example of audiovisuality, a phenomenon based on purposeful crossing of the boundaries between media. The blurring of genre lines becomes especially clear in scenes or sequences that directly incorporate musical pieces. These are typically one-minute long or otherwise short fragments that give the impression of watching a music video. Longer musical sequences, by contrast, require more viewer engagement. They invite interpretative reflection, and even deconstruction, prompting questions such as: Why was this particular piece chosen for this scene? How do the lyrics of the song relate to the world presented onscreen? Recent streaming series encourage viewers to become active participants in their experience rather than passive consumers of entertainment
Voorbeeldlevens van toen en nu
Wonderbaarlijke levens. Patronen in heiligenlevens by Ludo Jongen offers a richly illustrated and accessible exploration of medieval hagiography. Drawing on decades of research, Jongen examines recurring patterns in saints’ lives and their enduring relevance in both historical and modern contexts. The book consists of six thematic chapters, covering topics such as canonization processes, miracle narratives, literary motifs, and the reception of saints’ legends – most notably that of Saint Servatius. Jongen integrates historical, literary, and sociological perspectives, referencing a wide range of sources from medieval texts to contemporary cultural phenomena. He highlights the transnational nature of hagiography while maintaining a focus on Dutch saints. Though written in a popular-scientific style with limited academic apparatus, the study provides valuable insights and encourages further exploration. Its visual richness and interdisciplinary approach make it appealing to both general readers and those interested in cultural history and religious literature
Polska powieść XIX wieku w kanonie światowym
This article discusses the 2020 monograph Another Canon: The Polish Nineteenth-Century Novel in World Context edited by Grażyna Borkowska and Lidia Wiśniewska, published by LITVerlag in the series “Polonistik im Kontext,” a project aimed at popularizing knowledge on Polish literature abroad. The publication can be viewed in the broader context of considerations on the participation in what Luigi Marinelli calls “minor” literatures in shaping a common canon, and by extension as a voice on René Étiemble’s perception that canon-codifiers exhibit a tendency to distinctly “swing the balance” in favor of their own national literatures. The book contains works of fifteen authors stemming from centers of learning located outside of Poland, all of which have at least dual cultu-ral competences. In doing so, it shows how the Polish 19-century novel enters the consciousness of both specialized and readers.W artykule omówiono książkę Another Canon: The Polish Nineteenth-Century Novel in World Context pod redakcją Grażyny Borkowskiej i Lidii Wiśniewskiej, wydaną przez niemieckie wydawnictwo LITVerlag w 2020 roku w serii „Polonistik im Kontext”, jako projekt mający na celu popularyzację wiedzy o literaturze polskiej za granicą.
The present article offers an analysis of prose works from the sphere of literature functioning in the official circulation in the years 1981–1989, which the subject of the 1981–1983 martial law is discussed. Nowadays, it is a trend in literature that is very reluctantly recalled by literary historians due to its generally poor artistic qualities, but also because of various non-artistic sentiments. These works are currently utilized for political settlements. Meanwhile, read from a sociological perspective, they remain an interesting example of ideological manipulation. They depict martial law as a necessity in the face of social and political chaos caused by the activists of the independent trade union “Solidarity” (after August 1980, this organization was treated as acting against public interest , represented by the Polish United Workers’ Party). In this sense, the works referred to in the essay belonged can be qualified as political novels. Read today, they also make us realize the degree to which seeking a compromise with the authorities—which was imperative for authors wanting their works to function in the official circulation of literature—forced writers to adopt a servile attitude towards the political “powers that be” and bow the expectations of their representatives. Tymczasem odczytywana z perspektywy socjologicznej pozostaje ciekawym przykładem manipulacji ideologicznej. Czytane dzisiaj uświadamiają zarazem, w jaki sposób szukanie przez twórców kompromisu z władzą, pozwalającego zaistnieć w oficjalnym obiegu literatury, wymuszało postawę serwilistyczną wobec władzy i oczekiwań jej reprezentantów
A Corpus Exploration of Construction Frames for Russian ‘Resultant State’ Converb Constructions
This study formulates construction frames that characterise the grammatical and semantic features of the ‘resultant state’ usage of Russian converbs. By utilising the grammatical and semantic tag sets of the Russian National Corpus (RNC), two frames are developed as search queries aimed at eliciting the maximum number of examples of converbs with ‘resultant state’ usage: [VerbINDICATIVE:IPFV + converbPFV.INTRANSITIVE] and [VerbINDICATIVE:IPFV + ConverbPFV + NPACC,INALIENABLE]. These frames are evaluated in the RNC using the ‘frequency’ function, which quantifies the most recurrent lexical combinations, as well as through randomised samples. The evaluation shows that the proposed construction frames successfully retrieve examples of ‘resultant state’ usage. An analysis of the results reveals that changes in the position of the body and its parts constitute the most frequent semantic content of the retrieved constructions
Szukajcie, a znajdziecie. Czy aby na pewno? (O zapożyczeniach z języka macedońskiego do czeskiego)
This article explores whether it is possible to identify words in contemporary Czech that can be classified as loanwords from Macedonian. A review of the limited available literature shows that, due to the complex linguistic situation in the Balkan Peninsula—where languages from different families intertwine—and the absence of direct contact between the two nations for several centuries, it is difficult to isolate Czech lexical items that can be confidently traced back to Macedonian. Moreover, such words are not attested in contemporary Czech dictionaries.
Advice-seeking and advice-giving practices in an online health-related Q&A forum
The article examines advice-seeking and advice-giving in the context of an online Q&A forum on a Polish health-related website znanylekarz.pl. The material consists of question-answer messages exchanged in two threads related to two diff erent disorders, i.e. anxiety and hypothyroidism. The analysis focuses on the form and content of questions and answers in terms of discursive moves and selected lexico-grammatical features. The data are analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings provide insight into the discursive practices pursued by laypersons and medical doctors in an online advice-giving setting. The results show that users’ posts include problem statements, questions/requests, and acts of appealing. Doctors’ responses involve assessments, advice and referrals. The most frequent structures used in the realisation of questions and requests are direct questions and performative requests. Non-agentive structures tend to be used most frequently for advice and referral moves. The results also indicate that users’ messages are more direct and contain fewer conventional politeness acts than doctors’ posts. Similarities and differences in the interactional practices between the two threads are demonstrated as well

Bluźnierca czy heretyk?
Apocalypsis cum Figuris, the last performance of Jerzy Grotowski, was considered blasphemous. It was presented as such by Bishop Bronisław Dąbrowski, secretary of the Polish Episcopal Conference, in confidential conversations with the secretary of the Polish United Workers’ Party Central Committee Stanisław Kania and Minister Kazimierz Kąkol, head of the Office for Religious Affairs. However, the Church did not go to formal accusation, only Primate Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński condemned the work from the pulpit as pornographic. Jan Błoński belived this spectacle was not as tragic as the previous performances of the Laboratory Theatre, while Małgorzata Dziewulska saw it as a tragic variety of gnosis. The main character, The Simpleton, is anti-Church Christ, Christus in nobis, Christ acting in us. And that’s why Apocalypsis cum Figuris can be considered not only blasphemous but also heretical, just as some of Czesław Miłosz’s writings. However, the hierarchs of the Polish Church were not interested in Grotowski as a heretic — it was only the moral threads that outraged them in his work, which once again exposed the theological deficiency of Polish Catholicism and its obsession with sex.Apocalypsis cum figuris, ostatni spektakl Jerzego Grotowskiego, uznano za bluźnierczy. Jako taki przedstawiał go bp Bronisław Dąbrowski, sekretarz Konferencji Episkopatu Polski, w poufnych rozmowach z sekretarzem Komitetu Centralnego PZPR Stanisławem Kanią i z ministrem Kazimierzem Kąkolem, kierownikiem Urzędu do Spraw Wyznań. Główny bohater, Ciemny, to Chrystus antykościelny, Christus in nobis, Chrystus działający w nas.
