The article discusses a group of the oldest Gothic tombstones in Silesia, dating from the late 13th to the end of the first quarter of the 14th century. They are distinguished by an engraved or sculpted representation of the figure of the deceased. They are an important testimony to the changes in the typology of sepulchral monuments at the end of the 13th century. In view of the uncertain informa- tion regarding the earliest sarcophagi with carved figures or the disputed dating of those that remain, the slabs in question are the oldest evidence of this type of monument in Silesia. The linear form of the representation of the figures on the slabs is close to the art of drawing, hence these monuments should be regarded as an important addition to the knowledge of Silesian painting and drawing in a period from which we do not have a significant number of accounts. The analysis of the costumes of the depicted lay and clerical figures allows us to gain new information about this sphere of material culture, as well as about the symbolism expressed by the clothing and the attributes presented. The article also proposes revisions to some of the previous findings regarding the identification of commemorated individuals

At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, scientific deficits and thematic deficiencies in Silesian historical research were analysed in the university environment. Both scientific works, based on classical historical methodology, and others, that did not meet these requirements, were published. In parallel with the observed decrease in the number of scientific publications, the publication activity of persons not professionally related to historical research increased. When assessing the resulting literature, in general historical publications on the history of Silesia, Silesian studies were distinguished, representing objective classical history and subjective narration, called ahistory. Scientific disciplines, within which the research into Silesian history in a fragmentary way and for utilitarian purposes is conducted, were also identified

This article focuses on the streaming series Riverdale (Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, 2017–2023) distributed by Netflix. The creators of the series overtly refer to postmodern cinema, especially the works of David Lynch. In doing so, they use various kinds of disorientation techniques, that is, narrative devices that complicate the interpretation of what is presented. The author of the article performed a textual analysis on the 6 available seasons, focusing on demonstrating the correlation between the series and postmodern cinema. Then the various aspects of the series were assigned to the possible techniques of disorientation proposed by Andrzej Zalewski. The purpose of this text is to identify the “Lynchianism” in Riverdale and to demonstrate what techniques of disorientation are used by the creators of this series. A further intention is to resolve whether this is in fact a technique (seen by many as a deriving from ineptitude) or a strategy (resulting from deliberate action). The article attempts to view the contemporary work from a postmodern perspective. This article focuses on the streaming series Riverdale (Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, 2017–2023) distributed by Netflix. Lambert ten Kate en de fysicotheologie

This contribution discusses the work of the Dutch dilettante linguist Lambert Ten Kate (1674–1731), the first scholar to describe the system of Ablaut. It is claimed that ten Kate, who was also active as an amateur naturalist and writer-translator of religious works, took the same approach to all his research. This is a physicotheological view. Physicotheology is a school of theology that emerged at the end of the 17th century and remained popular well into the 18th century, which sought to gain knowledge about God through experimental research and which tried to prove his greatness, omnipotence and wisdom on the basis of hard facts which resulted from experimental research. Ten Kate’s important linguistic works should be seen in this context as an attempt to prove that a thorough analysis of the apparently chaotic language facts would reveal the system behind them. This system has been instilled into man by God and mankind has built it up through his reason. This contribution discusses the work of the Dutch dilettante linguist Lambert Ten Kate (1674–1731), the first scholar to describe the system of Ablaut. Les stratégies de la construction du discours sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans deux manuels d’histoire européens. Une perspective comparative

    No full text
This paper identifies strategies for the construction of discourse on the Second World War in two history textbooks published in the framework of two European projects. The main objective is to observe how different stratagems such as the semiotic device, lexical expressions, syntactic constructions, participate in the construction of a coherent narrative that shapes the collective memory on the discursive object of the Second World War. The dialogical character of the history textbook and its pedagogical aim, the essential and constitutive elements of the discursive strategy towards the readership conveying soft historical skills, are also questioned in the present paper. This paper identifies strategies for the construction of discourse on the Second World War in two history textbooks published in the framework of two European projects. « Sésame, ouvre-toi » : internationalisme phraséologique à contenu universel

Phraseological units, characterised by their opaque meaning, are the subject of multiple theoretical works. The following article adds to this discussion by providing another interesting example. It analyses the case of the Arabic phraseological unit ‘open sesame’ from the “Ali Baba and the Forty Thievesˮ folk tale, permeating into French, Italian, Polish, Turkish and Japanese – languages distant both linguistically and culturally. In each of the analysed languages, we can find the so-called absolute equivalents of the unit in question. Their analysis shows how a phraseological unit of a meaning rooted in a foreign culture enters a language that initially did not connote sesame with a ‘treasury’. Interestingly, the analysed unit became understandable enough to be re-used in other cultural sources, such as names of public places, or even to enter the target language dictionaries. However, as the corpus analysis suggests, the popularity of the unit in question varies between languages, being the most popular in Italian and the least in Japanese.Phraseological units, characterised by their opaque meaning, are the subject of multiple theoretical works.
