    Trzeźwość, „vegetal” i świat iluzji

    No full text
Drawing on the long-term ethnographic research conducted in the addiction treatment center Via da Paz, the article discusses the relationship between the concept of sobriety and reality. Via da Paz is located in the Brazilian Amazon. The center combines the União do Vegetal religious rituals with psychotherapeutic methods mostly grounded in Twelve-Step approaches. During the 9-month therapy people undergoing treatment drink vegetal – the psychoactive brew containing DMT. Though DMT is schedule 1-substance, classified within the UE Drug Conventions as a hallucinogenic drug, in Via da Paz practices related to consumption of vegetal play a central role in the recovery from addiction. Moreover, people undergoing therapy differentiate the state induced by the brew from “intoxication” with other psychoactive substances and experience it as sober. The aim of the article is to show that in certain social contexts, the path to sobriety (understood as a clear recognition of reality), may lead through the use of substances, that in other contexts are considered as distorting the perception of reality. As it is suggested this is related to the different ontological conceptualizations of the reality itself. Centrum łączy w swych praktykach leczniczych rytuały religii União do Vegetal z metodami psychoterapeutycznymi wywodzącymi się przede wszystkich z filozofii 12 kroków.

Technofeminizm. Zapiski na temat transfeministycznej technologii (wersja 3.0)

Lucía Egaña presents a vision of transfeminist takeover of capitalist technologies through their reconnection with bodily experience. Power operates on bodies, so the question of transfeminist technology is a question of dissident forms of embodiment. According to Egaña, through them we can transform our relationship with technology by introducing errors and disruptions into it. She argues for opening up codes—computer and cultural—and reusing them to create bottom-up, non-patentable and dissident forms of techno-embodiment.Lucía Egaña przedstawia wizję transfeministycznego przejęcia kapitalistycznych technologii poprzez ich ponowne powiązanie z cielesnym doświadczeniem. Władza operuje na ciałach, zatem pytanie o transfeministyczną technologię to pytanie o dysydenckie formy ucieleśnienia. Według Egañii to one mogą przekształcić naszą relację z technologią przez wprowadzenie do niej błędów i zakłóceń. Dlatego postuluje otwieranie kodów – komputerowych i kulturowych – i ich ponowne użycie do tworzenia oddolnych, nieopatentowanych i dysydenckich form technoucieleśnienia

Lost in Time? The Socialist Modernist Monuments of the Former Yugoslavia and Their Shifting Conceptualization

    Get PDF
This paper explores the “lost language” of monuments erected in the former Yugoslavia from the 1960s to the 1980s—more precisely, the 25 national monuments captured by the lens of photographer Jan Kempenaers over the span of three years (2006−2009), and published in the monograph Spomenik [Monument] (2010). By combining the approach of cognitive linguistics and cultural studies, in particular that of Forceville (“Identifi cation”, “Metaphor”, “Agendas”), Kövecses (Culture, Context), Ortiz, and Kirn and Burghardt, this paper aims to explore the conceptual metaphors embedded in these monuments as part of a specifi c symbolic landscape, immanent to the countries of the former Yugoslavia at a historical point of their four-decades-long political, social, and cultural merger, as well as the current possibilities and limitations of the visual/multimodal decodifi cation of the memorials. This article analyses the ideology and ways of presenting ideological standpoints in literary and artistic periodicals of Ukrainian emigrees in the second half of the 1940s. The creators and publishers of these periodicals were Ukrainian refugees who settled in displaced persons camps in the western occupation zones of Germany and Austria, as well as in Italy, and various emigration centres connected with the structures of such camps. The analysis includes: 1) the evaluation of declarations and program tasks of editorial teams; 2) defining the scope of the actual subordination of published texts to public declarations; 3) indicating the manifestations of ideological orientation in published texts; 4) determining the political parties the leading authors or groups of authors were affiliated with; 5) exploring the ways in which ideological views influenced the editorial policy of refugee camps periodicals. The article discusses periodicals published by the Artistic Ukrainian Movement (Mysté tskyi Ukraínskyi Rukh, MUR) and a few other magazines which, like MUR, proclaimed slogans of apoliticality and independence of emigration political groups (including Zahrava, Litavry, Literaturnyi zoshyt and Orlyk) as well as religious periodicals (Zhyttia i slovo and Dzvin) and nationalist magazines (including Literaturno-naukovyi visnyk and Vezhi). Although the periodicals which emphasised impartiality and ideological independence in their editorial programs were most numerous, it did not mean that the authors who had their texts published therein were ideologically independent. Representatives of artistic circles, like other emigrees, did not shun party life and often shared the views of various political organisations.Czasopisma wydawane przez Ukraiński Ruch Artystyczny oraz inne czasopisma „niezależne” (między innymi „Zahrava” i „Orlyk”). This article presents the assumptions of a currently being developed method of diagnosing the needs of public library patrons. The theoretical part presents recent research in this field conducted in Poland. English-language literature on this subject as well as relevant norms are also referred to. Then, the concept of the developed method is outlined. It consists of three complementary elements: an analysis of statistical data, an online survey conducted among the readers of a given institution, and observations and in-person interviews of users. All of these stages are discussed one by one. This type of combination of quantitative and qualitative research enables a reliable diagnosis of the needs of readers in a selected institution. This has been confirmed by a pilot study carried out in a public library of a town with less than 100,000 inhabitants. Its results and conclusions are presented in the last part of this articleBadania użytkowników bibliotek w Polsce — wybrane przykłady. Absolutyzacja woli ludu jako źródło degeneracji ustroju demokratycznego

    No full text
The aim of the article is to outline the distinction between the nomocratic and the voluntarist version of democracy. Based of the findings of classical political philosophy, I strive to show that democracy can also turn into tyranny, the basic feature of which is the instability of the law. The main issue I am considering is the question of how to limit the will of the people without placing any other will above people’s will. In the past, this was achieved by depoliticizing the people. Today, however, this path seems closed due to, among other things, the constant pressure on the people to take a stand. The people are convinced by party leaders that they are a many-headed monarch and that their will is above the law. This creates the conditions for the emergence and functioning of a voluntarist democracy, which is a tyranny of the majority. Thus, the prospects for the development of a nomocratic democracy, in which the people are seen as guardians of law, are not bright. The aim of the article is to outline the distinction between the nomocratic and the voluntarist version of democracy. Niemieccy myśliciele w Polsce. O działalności naukowej i translatorskiej Elżbiety Paczkowskiej-Łagowskiej wspomnienie pośmiertne

    No full text
In this analysis my aim is to highlight the achievements of Elżbieta Paczkowska-Łagowska in the study of German ideas. A secondary aim of the consideration is to demonstrate that it is to Elżbieta Paczkowska-Łagowska that we in Poland owe the knowledge of some German names which, although important for the doctrinal map of the world, would not be known in Poland if it were not for her work. Out of the enormous number of publications by the industrious researcher and translator of the works German thinkers, two figures have been selected to show the broad spectrum of Elżbieta Paczkowska-Łagowska’s scientific research and to highlight her exceptional contribution to the introduction of German philosophers, thinkers or essayists into the scope of interest of Polish science. These include Helmuth Plessner, the founder of political anthropology, and Golo Mann, a historian and political scientist. Both thinkers would not be known in Poland if it were not for the translating and scientific efforts of Paczkowska-Łagowska. The choice of these two German scholars was dictated by the symbolic illustration of the main research of the author of The Logos of Life, the essence of which is the study of man and history. In this analysis my aim is to highlight the achievements of Elżbieta Paczkowska-Łagowska in the study of German ideas.
