    Estetyki interfejsów w mediach interaktywnych

    No full text
The introduction to the thematic number of “Quart”, entitled Interface aesthetics in interactive media, presents the title issue of interfaces from the perspective of interdisciplinary humanities research. The author points out that interfaces are the basic tool for users’ interaction in the digital space, and at the same time they perform various cognitive, communication and aesthetic functions. Due to the multifunctionality, variability and reconfigurability of interfaces, reflection on them integrates knowledge and methodology from various areas of science. Therefore, the articles published in this volume were prepared by specialists representing various fields and disciplines of research

Discursive and dialogic interfaces, panoptic power and “penetrative technologies” in Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049”

    No full text
Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 (2017) is a culture text that, in many scenes, creatively uses visualisations of futuristic machine interfaces designed to scan and penetrate realms inaccessible to humans. Many of these devices can be interpreted from the perspective of Vilém Flusser’s research on discursive and dialogic technologies. The former, according to the philosopher, serve to enslave individuals, while the latter as emancipatory gestures. The universe presented in Villeneuve’s film has the characteristics of a panoptic dystopia, in which knowledge is an element of strengthening corporate and state power. The discursive technologies associated with panoptic power, and their interfaces and functionaries, are here vested with the mission of finding and archiving data lost in a catastrophic incident to reinforce the oppressive order. The agent of telemetric upheaval, on the other hand, is the main character – the posthuman, who turns out by the end of the plot to be the personification of the idea of a dialogical interface – which can serve the homo sapiens with his cognitive abilities to discover inaccessible truths, enabling them to find a symbiotic way of humanity’s existence with its technological creations and opening up to the Other

    „Matka Ukraina” – dzisiaj

    No full text
The text is an attempt to refer to Prof. Waldemar Okoń’s article Matka Ukraina (Mother Ukraine), published in 1992 in his volume Alegorie narodowe. Studia z dziejów sztuki polskiej XIX wieku (National allegories. Studies in the history of Polish art of the 19th century), made in the context of the Russian aggression against Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the massive influx of Ukrainian refugees to Poland and the profound changes taking place in Polish-Ukrainian relations. The very special “Ukrainian renaissance” we are currently experiencing confronts us with difficult, perplexing tasks. One is how to evaluate the broadly defined 19th c. “Ukrainian school of Polish Romanticism”. This term is most often referred to a group of poets; however, it can be extended to all fields of creativity and to the entire 19th century. As the author proves, the study of culture is the study of powerful and timeless myths that elude successive methodological approaches or current ideologies. Therefore, the point is not to postulate a “reworking” or revision of the entire great heritage of “Mother Ukraine”, but to pose the questions: what should we do with the falsified, but ingrained in memory, in authentic emotions and traditions, very diverse images and artistic visions of Ukraine

Mauzoleum Hoymów w Brzegu Dolnym – wybitna realizacja klasycystyczna czy typowy produkt epoki?

    No full text
The paper is a contribution to the discussion on the mausoleum of the Hoym family in Brzeg Dolny, which was sparked by Jerzy Kos’s article published in “Quart” No. 1 in 2023. The author argues that the mausoleum should be regarded as a specimen of the Greek revival style. The edifice is a typical product of its times and one of the multiple park buildings based on the then-fashionable British models. Its uniqueness lies in that it is the oldest preserved structure in the Greek revival style deliberately designed for sepulchral and commemorative ends

Historia gospodarcza Śląska w polsko-niemieckim dialogu po 1945 r. (zarys problematyki)

    No full text
The impressive development of industry in Silesia was reflected in many works of Polish and German historians after 1945. Differences in assessments are generally small, and those that do exist are mainly due to different national positions. These differences relate in particular to the crisis situation after 1918 and the division of Upper Silesia. After 1989, evaluations of this kind occur incidentally, and rather just in publications of a popular-science character

Szansa na sanację miasta? Wizja odbudowy Wrocławia z lat 1945–1946 autorstwa niemieckiego architekta Ottona Seibla

    No full text
The paper depicts the activities of German architect Otto Seibel in the Polish Construction Department and compares his, now completely forgotten, vision of rebuilding and sanitizing the city with previous urban planning conceptions concerning Wrocław. Seibel’s project was most probably the first serious attempt to address this issue. He started to outline wide-ranging plans of clearing communication routes, as well as erecting new buildings and whole city districts already in May 1945. The author of this article aims also to present the factors which ultimately caused this vision to remain unrealised and the reasons for which a former direct Karl Hanke’s associate remained one of the key staff members of the Polish Construction Department for nearly a year and a half
