Nothing Exists: Nonbeing as a Man-Made Image (Eikon). A Gorgianic Argument

    No full text
There have been three different approaches to Gorgias’ texts. According to the first approach, Gorgias’ treatise On What is Not is just a rhetorical parody of philosophical doctrines (philological or rhetorical approach). According to the second approach, Gorgias is just a nihilist (or a negative dogmatic or a forerunner of scepticism) attacking the doctrines of the Eleatics and the Presocratics (ontological approach). On the third approach (which attributes to Gorgias an interesting philosophical position): a) Gorgias is seriously interested in the problems of predication and meaning (linguistic interpretation), and b) he wants to show that “nothing exists” in the sense that nonbeings like chimeras are manmade imaginary entities, i.e. mental images, icons (eikones), as he characterizes them (phenomenological/perceptual interpretation). Based on these philosophical interpretations, it will be shown that, in the 5th century BCE treatise On What is Not, Gorgias argues that nonbeing does exist in the form of mental images. An interpretation that is corroborated by Plato as well

This paper aims at two goals. First, I analyse the possibility of virtuous machines. I shall argue that this might be of interest not only for ethics of technology taken as a regulation of designing and market implementation of certain kind of autonomous machines, but also as a method of uncovering some hidden aporias of the language of current debate in ethics of technology, and primarily in the ethics of Artificial Intelligence and robots. Thus, the second goal of the paper is critical and aims at pinpointing some of the sources of these limitations and a handful of significant philosophical questions which the turn to the language of virtue makes available

This article is the result of research conducted as part of my current doctoral research, „The History and Reconstruction of the Book Collection of the Polish Philosophical Society”. The Polish Philosophical Society is one of the most important philosophical organizations in Poland. Its book collection is the smallest deposited in the Joint Libraries of the Faculties of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Polish Philosophical Society, yet it is also the most valuable due to its abundance of 19th-century publications. The publications in the collection contain many ownership marks, reflecting the Society’s numerous transformations. The article provides a qualitative and provenance analysis of this book collection. Provenance and bibliographic methods are used to examine the characteristics of selected items. Selected examples of books from private and institutional collections demonstrate the interconnections between their previous owners. The long and complex history of the Polish Philosophical Society is also reflected

The topic focuses on the significance of the Parisian Philosophical-Ethical-Social Study of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) as a vital center for promoting Polish philosophical thought in France. Established in 1999, the Study quickly gained recognition within the Polish expatriate community by enrolling a considerable number of philosophy students. It made a significant contribution to the development of the Polish academic environment in France. The continuously growing interest in master’s, postgraduate, and doctoral studies, along with collaborations established with French institutions, vividly testifies to the dynamic evolution of this academic center on French soil. In the context of the increasing importance of higher education, the Academic Study in Paris has been acknowledged as a vibrant center that not only propagated Polish philosophical thought but also worked towards cultural and intellectual dialogue. Initiatives undertaken by the Study, such as organizing symposia and “summer universities,” contributed to enriching its academic offerings. It is also worth emphasizing that the success of the Study was not only rooted in its rich educational offerings but also in the commitment of its lecturers and students. Collaboration with the weekly “Voix Catholique” was a crucial element of the communication strategy of the Philosophical-Ethical-Social Study of KUL in Paris, enabling it to reach a broader audience. The weekly not only informed about current events related to the Study’s activities but also promoted all initiatives of this Polish academic center on French soil

Człowiekowi potrzebny jest dialog. Refleksje etnomuzykolożki

Contemporary ethnomusicologists emphasize that ethnographic practices should be dialectical in nature and based on cooperation between the researcher and the researched. The traditional power dynamics between them is replaced by dialogue, an interactive process in which both sides participate. A useful tool in research can be Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of polyphony and dialogism, adapted by representatives of various branches of the humanities and social sciences, and since the 1990s also by musicologists. After outlining the main assumptions of this theory, related to such concepts as “polyphony,” “dialogue,” “heteroglossia,” “chronotope,” and “carnivalization,” possible inspirations for research on musical phenomena are discussed. Using these concepts, the author attempts to describe the musical culture of Polish diaspora groups living in a multi-ethnic environment in Brazil, where she conducted field research with students from the University of Wrocław and Adam Mickiewicz University. Korzystając z tych pojęć, autorka podjęła próbę opisu kultury muzycznej grup polonijnych żyjących w wieloetnicznym środowisku w Brazylii, gdzie prowadziła badania terenowe ze studentami z Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego i Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
