O problemie historii myśli o kulturze

The notion that although culture as such has existed for centuries, culture as a theoretical issue is of recent origin can serve as a starting point for considerations on the history of reflection on culture. The identification and conceptualization of this issue, along with its social and intellectual factors, are the focal interest of the history of cultural reflection. This field should not be reductively identified with either the history of culture or culture theory. While the history of reflection on culture is closely related to these fields of knowledge, it enjoys a relative epistemic independence and importance in the teaching process. Historians of cultural reflection are also theoreticians of culture, and their inquiry into and interpretations of what has been written about culture are the study of culture itself. Z tymi dziedzinami wiedzy pozostaje w bliskich relacjach, zachowuje jednak swoją względną poznawczą niezależność i ważność w procesie dydaktycznym. Historyk myśli o kulturze jest bowiem również jej teoretykiem, a jego analizy i interpretacje tego, co o kulturze napisano, są badaniem jej samej

    No full text
The principal aim of the article is to present how the culture of the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic stimulated social change in the country. The analysis pertains to the theatre as a kind of art deeply embedded in “now and then” of that time. The art that enthusiastically reacted to all the processes taking place in the sphere of widely considered collective, social life. The example of The Master and Margarita by Andrzej Maria Marczewski demonstrates how theatre practically initiated a debate on important sociopolitical issues. The spectacles illustrated political processes, social ambitions and the tasks for the widely understood culture that followed. The sketch begins with outlining the most important events of the time. The birth of the Solidarity movement together with several months of its legalized activity that led to the introduction of Martial Law in December 1981. Against such background two adaptations of Bulgakov’s novel dated 1980 and 1981 are analyzed. Their fundamental point of reference was based on the generational experience that was closely linked to the axiological dimension of human existence. The next part of the article concentrates on the 1988 staging of The Master and Margarita, which was produced under different political conditions both in Poland and in the USSR. In order to spot differences in both the ways the contemporary issues were presented and the means of their presentation leading to the connection with the audience, the staging was compared to the famous production of Bulgakov’s novel by Maciej Englert

Echa „Podróży zimowej” Petera Handkego, czyli pisarz w ogniu krytyki. O konsekwencjach literackiej fascynacji baśniową Jugosławią w twórczości austriackiego noblisty

In the late autumn of 1995, Peter Handke traveled to Yugoslavia, a country scarred by civil war, which has always been an important point of reference in his work as a place to remember his multicultural roots. In many of his works, the writer returns to his native Carinthia, which in his eyes is an extension of the fairy-tale Yugoslavia, a country that has painfully disintegrated before his eyes. The result of this trip was an essay published a year later, A Journey to the Rivers. Justice for Serbia (Eine winterliche Reise zu den Flussen Donau, Save, Morawa und Drina oder Gerechtigkeit fur Serbien) and Handke’s intention was to target the media reporting on the Balkan war. The book very quickly became the subject of passionate discussion (the writer was accused of glorifying the perpetrators), its echoes were revived again in 2019 when Peter Handke was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature

Polski dyskurs tożsamościowy w powieści „Przewóz” Andrzeja Stasiuka

    No full text
Andrzej Stasiuk frequently employs narrative forms such as storytelling and essayistic reflection to engage in a literary dialogue with political realities. In his works, the author critiques attempts to reshape paradigms of collective memory, reframe them, and base them on a dichotomous “us/them” perspective, both in historiographical discourse and in contemporary European relations. Undoubtedly, the “unprocessed” experiences of dictatorship on the one hand, and, on the other, the deepening integration and intensifying global phenomena, significantly influence contemporary Polish identity discourse. The novel Przewóz is yet another literary endeavor – alongside Stasiuk’s numerous journalistic works – to confront the emotionally charged identity debate in modern Poland

The paper provides an overview and assessment of the place and importance of Russian literary awards (state and non-state) from the 19th century to the present day. The author’s attention is focused on pointing to different functions performed by the most important awards in the Soviet period (Lenin’s, Stalin’s and State Awards), as well as after the turn of 1991 (Russian Booker Award, Antybooker, Triumph). While in the times of the USSR, the awards were awarded (without the participation of readers) almost exclusively to creators who served the authorities and were faithful to the party ideology, ensuring their popularity and high spending, after the collapse of the Soviet empire – under different socio-political and economic conditions – their dimensions changed completely. Non-state awards have gained in importance, as their multiplicity and ephemerality cause the blurring of the literary hierarchy and the decline of the literary process
