Fenomen doświadczenia mistycznego i przebóstwienia w pismach Angelusa Silesiusa i Thomasa Mertona

    No full text
The article presents a comparative analysis of the mystical paths of two important figures: 18th-century Baroque mystic Johannes Scheffler (Angelus Silesius) and American 20th-century writer, poet, and Trappist Thomas Merton. Angelus Silesius, raised in the Lutheran faith and converted to Catholicism, developed his mystic interests under the influence of Jakob Böhme. His mysticism was characterised by the pursuit of deification and demonstrated a paradoxical relationship between God and man. The author himself utilised robust language, drawing from symbolism and alchemy, to describe the experience of mystical unity. On the other hand, Thomas Merton, following his conversion to Catholicism, joined a Trappist monastery and became one of the most important spiritual masters of his time. Merton stressed the importance of religious contemplation as the intuition in regards to the real presence of God, leading to “annihilation” of the false ego and discovery of the real self in relation to God and the world. Even though both mystics lived in different eras and environments, the author points out five main common points in their approach to mysticism. Main differences result from the historical and religious contexts of their respective lives, as well as their literary styles. Silesius was more deeply rooted in the Catholic Counter-Reformation theology, while Merton was more eclectic. The article concludes that, despite the differences, the approaches of Silesius and Merton resonate around fundamental values and goals of spiritual development, confirming the universal aspect of the pursuit of unity with God

Mistyka oblubieńcza w kompozycjach emblematycznych Daniela Sudermanna i jej oddziaływanie na sztukę kościelną

Among the theologians who held influence over the work of Angelus Silesius, Daniel Sudermann (1550–1631) is, without a doubt, one of the most intriguing early medieval authors of works on spirituality. While he was baptised Catholic and educated in a Reformed school, his views were most impacted by Silesian reformer Caspar von Schwenckfeld. Similarly to Schwenckfeld, Sudermann was fascinated by Rhineland mysticism – works of Johannes Tauler, Heinrich Seuse and, in particular, Johannes Eckhart. It was from these authors that Sudermann took the concept of the three-stage Christian soul’s path to God, leading from purification (Lat. via purgativa) to enlightenment (Lat. via illuminativa), to mystical unification with the Saviour (Lat. via unitiva). Curiously, Daniel Sudermann utilised almost exclusively text-and-image compositions in the form of ephemera and an emblem book, visualising various aspects of spirituality, often through the topos of bridal mysticism, which in itself originated from the Song of Songs. Sudermann’s works, steeped in mystical piety, were published numerous times, particularly through Jacob van den Heyden’s publishing house in Strasbourg. The article is an effort to discuss Sudermann’s emblematic compositions, as well as an attempt to demonstrate examples of their influence on ecclesiastical art. The need for spiritual development through text-and-visual compositions in Sudermann’s works turned out to be so strong that picturae – initially meant to serve individual, personal development of the faithful – became, with time, part of church decorations. Confessional differences played no role in this case, as the designs of the spiritualist from Strasbourg were also used in decorations of Lutheran churches, such as pictorial decorations in the Holy Trinity Chapel of the Friedenstein castle in Gotha, Thuringia (1646–1648), lost confessional in Wierzbno near Pyrzyce, Pomerania (1696), and panels from the parapet of the western gallery in Bobbin, Rügen (fourth quarter of the 17th century)

The general scarcity of sources available for research on the Vistula rafting in the Partition era is partially alleviated by the contemporary press sources, and in particular by “Dziennik Handlowy” [The Commercial Journal] – the most important Polish post-1772 newspaper on the matters of economy. It contains valuable information on the political, legal and economic conditions of the rafting trade, water transport and technical support for rafting, statistics on ship traffic and the flow of goods, as well as difficulties in inland navigation

Ekonomiczno-polityczne uwarunkowania projektów integracji europejskiej przed układem o EWWiS

The initial projects of European integration were confederal. A. Smith’s idea of free trade rejected protectionism; C. Jungler, L. Mises, N. Kondratiev and J. Schumpeter proved that it distorted the sinusoidal flow of the economic cycle. However, the nationalism espoused by various European countries led them to introduce tariffs and protective measures aimed at protecting domestic production, which in turn spiraled into trade and currency wars as well as armed conflicts. After World War I, L. Sturzo proposed the economic and political unification of European countries in the Common Market form. His proposal, combining the principles of subsidiarity, solidarity and divided sovereignty with the principles of American functionalism, became the basis of the Christian Democratic concept of European integration. It was complemented by J. Monnet’s strategy of “partially” achieving the first stage of European integration: the European Coal and Steel Community.Najstarszymi projektami integracji europejskiej są koncepcje konfederacyjne. Idea wolnego handlu A. Smitha odrzuciła protekcjonizm; C. Jungler, L. Mises, N. Kondratiew i J. Schumpeter dowiedli, że wykrzywiał on sinusoidalnie przebiegający cykl koniunkturalny. Jednak nacjonalizm cechujący państwa europejskie, zwalczające kryzysy gospodarcze za pomocą ceł i ochrony własnej produkcji, prowadził do wojen handlowych, walutowych i konfliktów zbrojnych. Dopełniła ją metoda J. Monneta „cząstkowego” dochodzenia do pierwszego etapu integracji europejskiej: Europejskiej Wspólnoty Węgla i Stali
