THE MENTAL HEALTH OF ADOLESCENT REFUGEES IN MALAYSIA
Get PDFAs of June 2017, 24.8 % of the 149, 200 reported refugees in Malaysia aged 18 years and below and of that figure, 33% were females. There has been little research into the mental well-being of the refugee adolescents. This cross-sectional survey study examined the differences in stress, anxiety, and depression faced according to gender and whether there is any association between them. 104 refugee adolescents from four non-governmental organization educational centers participated in the study. The Depression, Anxiety, Stress scale 21 was used to measure the severity of the core symptoms of depression. The results showed that females have significantly higher stress, anxiety and depression compared to that of males at p<.001. Generally,the refugee has mild to normal stress as compared with anxiety and depression where a significant majority of those aged 14-27 years experienced severe to extreme severe anxiety with a moderate level of depression. A further analysis found that severe stress positively associated with anxiety and depression. Insights into the stress, anxiety and depression experienced by refugee adolescents are crucial towards understanding the mental health of young refugees. The current study may benefit mental health workers and humanitarian agencies to address and improve the mental health of refugees, regardless of any labels attached to them. 
LAURA, VERSUS THE DARK LADY, A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SHAKESPEARE AND PETRARCH’S SONNETS

Nevertheless, Both Shakespeare and Petrarch were among the most magnificent sonneteers of Europe and both of them talked about love, and death in their sonnets. Shakespeare urges another, a young man to find love and marry, while Petrarch talks about his own love toward Laura. Shakespeare talks about a dark lady, who hurts the lover (a person other than Shakespeare). Petrarch’s discussions are about his Laura who does not heed his love. Shakespeare talks about death, to frighten and motivate the fair youth to marry, but Petrarch talks about death to show his sadness for the shortness of his time to pursue his lovely Laura. Through a comparative study, this article endeavours to compare the poetical works of two of the most celebrated sonneteers of all times through the aspects of love, hurt and death and tries to show their different worldviews
STUDY OF BODILY AWARENESS DURING A PSYCHOLOGICAL INQUIRY
Get PDFIn the last few decades there have been an increasing number of studies on mental health and emotional well-being and their influence on physical health. According to this approach, physical problems often manifest unexpressed hidden inner conflicts. Psychologists increasingly apply their client's awareness of bodily sensations as a tool for therapy. In my paper I would like to present one of such psychological methods named focusing which I use in my practice as a clinical psychologist. Focusing method was elaborated by Eugene Gendlin, American philosopher, who collaborated with the founder of person-centered therapy Carl Rogers. Gendlin’s research showed that positive change in psychotherapy depended on client’s ability to experience bodily reaction of the topics discussed during therapy. In my practice I include Focusing method into my own system based on the idea that we can influence our healing process by discovering inner resources. It becomes possible when we get rid of feeling guilty and feeling of "being wrong" and overcome a negative self-image created as a result of adverse childhood .I have found that the awareness and verbalization of negative feelings facilitate the process of releasing emotional suffering from the memory of the body. Specific bodily responses can lead to discovering the true reasons of emotional conflicts. I would like also to show how I combine the Focusing approach with another psychological method based on the connection of body and mind, Recall Healing elaborated by Canadian expert in holistic approach to health Gilbert Renaud
PERMANENCY OF LEADER SELF-CONFIDENCE DEVELOPMENT: A LONGITUDINAL COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to determine if youths’ leader self-confidence, once developed in a leadership training program, persisted over time. It is exploratory comparative analysis research comparing two studies on the same leadership training program: Benson (1991) and the Canadian Alberta Provincial Government (1995). Benson’s (1991) study assessed youths’ self-confidence 3 months after they attended the provincial leadership training program. The Alberta Provincial Government (1995) study assessed youths’ and adults’ self-confidence 1 to 8 years after they attended the same provincial leadership training program. Although this is not a true longitudinal study following the same subjects over time; it is a follow-up study measuring the impact of the provincial leadership training program on the permanency of self-confidence development and retention over time. This is one of the few leadership studies on self-efficacy and self-confidence to do this. This exploratory study will do an in-depth comparative analysis of Benson and Enstroem’s (2014) Leader Self-Confidence Indicator (LSCI) 4 dimensions. Specifically, both studies (Benson, 1991 and the Alberta Provincial Government, 1995) and both data sets of both quantitative and qualitative data within those two studies will be analyzed to find out if participants increased their leadership self-confidence in any of the 4 dimensions and retained self-confidence overtime
EXPLORING THE EXPENDITURES OF FOREIGN TOURISTS IN TAIWAN ON LOCAL SPECIALTY PRODUCTS AND TEA
Get PDFIn order to understand the expenditures of tourists in Taiwan regarding tea and local famous specialty products, it is essential to examine the demographic nature of the inbound tourists. In this study, information was gathered from the 2015 Annual Survey Report on Visitors’ Expenditures and Trends in Taiwan of the Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), which included 6277 respondents, and analyzed by using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression methods. The analysis shows that gender, age, education, income, country of origin, travel purpose, travel type, and number of days stayed in Taiwan were the most significant factors to forecast the level of purchasing of tea and specialty products. With a greater understanding of these factors, the tourism industry in Taiwan will be able to increase revenue and improve their products and services. Meanwhile, as a reference for Taiwanese government can re-examine its tourism market to establish new policies and marketing plans to boost local economy

Get PDFThis research aims to find out the influence of intellectual quotient, learning behavior, and the students’ perception about the competence of the teacher on the level of International Financial Reporting Standards understanding. The population was the accounting students of State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar, Hasanuddin University, and State University of Makassar which was taken by using random sampling method, and resulted 75 respondents. Compound regression was utilized as the hypothesis test. The result reveals that intellectual quotient and learning behavior partially influence significantly positive on the level of International Financial Reporting Standards understanding, while the students’ perception about the competence of the lecturer does not influence partially. Therefore, intellectual quotient, learning behavior and the students’ perception about the lecturer competence simultaneously have an effect on the level of International Financial Reporting Standards understanding.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN TRADITIONAL TURKISH HOUSING; PLANNING, INTERIOR ORGANIZATION AND DETAILS
Get PDFEnergy efficiency is an important component of ecological sustainability. Traditional houses constructed before the widespread use of reinforced concrete structures are compulsorily compatible with the nature. This is caused by lack of energy efficient technological options. The objective of this paper is to emphasize the planning, interior organization and the details of the Traditional Turkish Housing in terms of energy efficiency. All these factors are shaped by common design principles, climatic and topographic characteristics of the region. In this paper planning, the sun, prevailing wind direction and topography with the sofa (a kind of intermediate space between rooms), summer/winter floor and floor-top storey for living; in the interior organization, interior arrangement and positions of sitting unit sedir (a kind of couch) and the fireplace; in the details, bay window, upper window and so on are evaluated in terms of energy efficiency. The methodology of this paper is qualitative and it depends on literature review and examination of the general characteristics of the Traditional Turkish Housing in Turkey. The significance of this paper is adding interior organization and the details to the energy efficiency field, contrary to the previous research that mostly focuses on the planning piece. The findings of this paper which are planning, interior organization and the details of the Traditional Turkish Housing support the ecological sustainability in terms of energy efficiency
POLITICAL ECONOMY OF CATTLE COLONY: BETWEEN HERDERS-FARMERS CONFLICTS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Get PDFIn sub-Sahara African countries, agriculture has remained the mainstay of the economies. It has contributed to about 86.03% of the nations’ Gross Domestic Products (GDP). Nigeria being like every other nation state in Africa has been encouraged in the area of agriculture which stands tall to provide sustainability to the teeming population. In the recent time, the perceived serial conflicts between the Fulani herders and the indigenous farmers across the country has brought in fear of depletion of agricultural production, systemic disequilibrium and loss of lives and property. However, it is against this backdrop that the paper sets to appreciate the effects of herders-farmers conflicts on food production, sustainable national development and the political economy behind establishing cattle colonies across the country. Methodologically, the study appropriated qualitative method while generating its data and analyzed in content. The theoretical frame work of analysis is adequately anchored on the theory of eco-violence as propounded by Thomas Homer-Dixon (1988; 1999); and Gledistch, (2002). The findings of the study has adequately revealed that the serial conflicts between herders and the farmers had gravely undermined the contribution of agricultural sector, depleted internally generated revenue and loss of man power that would have sustained national development in Nigeria. The study strongly recommends among other; the voluntary giving out portion(s) of land by private individuals or purchase of land by the herders for their private businesses
AWARENESS, TREATMENT AND CONTROL OF TYPE II DIABETES IN MAURITIUS: A QUALITATIVE STUDY
Get PDFThe study focuses on examining the prevalence, treatment preferences and knowledge about Type II diabetes in Mauritius. Despite the fact that the rate of Type II diabetes has been stabilized for the past 30 years, Mauritius is still one among the countries which has a very high rate of diabetes. Poor eating habits and adopting an unhealthy lifestyle are two of the major reasons for this increased rate of Type II diabetes. The objectives of this study is to find out the level of awareness of Type II diabetes in Mauritius, to understand the variations of treatment preferences among social groups and to find out whether diabetes campaigns are effective in the prevention of this illness. In order to obtain data from Type II diabetes patients on their treatment preferences and their level of awareness, in-depth face to face interviews were conducted with 15 participants in a public hospital, a local health Centre and a private clinic of the Island. Findings show that nutritional knowledge concerning food and a healthy lifestyle was low among the participants, which caused them to suffer from Type II diabetes. In addition to that, some of the informants claimed that they are not able to consume a healthy diet on a daily basis due to the lack of money. However, with strategies implemented by the health care systems such as educational talks on Type II diabetes, campaigns and distribution of pamphlets and brochures, diabetic people are able to control their illnesses by adopting a healthy lifestyle
