    Get PDF
Encouraging hospitality students in reflective and transformative learning toward a global mindset becomes an imperative for developing their cross-culturally professional competency in preparation of the future career path development. Oversea exchange programs are among the initiatives to raise personal, professional and cultural awareness for the hospitality students in a pathway to encourage cross-cultural learning among students in similar fields. However, to what extent the development of a global mindset gained from the cross-cultural experiences could help undergraduate hospitality students gain their professional competency in terms of cultural skills in the hospitality and tourism context is the main issue to be described by this study. Content analysis has been conducted on in-depth interview data given by hospitality oversea exchange students who are both current students and graduated ones. The most popular modes of international student exchanges such as team project, assignment, presentations, and travel exchanges are taken into consideration to highlight deeper insights into a mutual interest between the cross-cultural experiences and the professional competency related cultural skills. The study reveals that cultural understanding needs to be experienced in the real setting context. Furthermore, we also discovered that cultural exchange outcomes are normally obtained in the daily informal practices instead of formal studies. However, the current study is constrained within few selected countries where students have been experienced and the current partnership between the home and host Institutions. This paper provides actionable guidelines and approach for integrating the critical component of cultural exchange program in the traditional curriculum program of hospitality

    Get PDF
This study was conducted in order to highlight the growing ‘tiangge’ industry in the municipality of Taytay, Rizal Philippines where certain dynamics were observed in and between the seller and its clients in the areas of selling and its strategies. Drawn basically from the perspective of the sellers, this research evaluated the kind, style, selling scheme, price and frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) about ready-to-wear (RTW) products and other related commodities sold in Taytay tiangge. The researchers used the Bottom of the pyramid theory, Defensive marketing theory and Consumer Theory which are common and most effective theories when it comes to strategies implementation for Flea Markets, Bazaars and Tiangge in the modern day.  Through descriptive statistics, it was underscored that the top-selling kind of RTW was blouses for women in the price range of 100-150 Php. (Philippine Peso) by wholesale and retail quantities. Other kinds of RTW/commodities include undergarments, curtains, bed sheets, shoes and bags in which the sellers variably offer together with the RTW products. Through a Chi-Square test, the variables drawn from the sellers’ perspective (kinds of RTW products sold, styles of RTW products sold, the selling scheme, and the price range of the RTW products) were correlated to the variables drawn from the purchasing interest of the market (bestseller RTW products sold according to kind, bestseller RTW products sold according to styles, the customers’ scheme of purchasing, price reference of the customers and their frequently asked questions); showing thus the positive significant effects on all variables except on style. Thus, in this study the researchers concluded that the strategies of the sellers are relative to the purchasing interest of the market. However, due to limitations stipulated within the duration of the study, it is further interesting to revisit the other aspect/dynamism of differences between females and males in terms of preferred kinds, styles, quantity and price. Furthermore, a comprehensive study should follow through in the interest of the municipality in the advent of ‘tiangge’ as a thriving industry that could potentially help sustain the local economy

FORMALISATION OF LABOUR: THE ECONOMICS OF PROSTITUTION IN INDIA

    Get PDF
Prostitution is one of the oldest professions of the world and has been practiced since the birth of the Indian society. The moral ambiguity that engulfs this practice is increasingly bringing out the question of its formalization. This paper assesses the technical shortcomings in India that go unnoticed in the midst of the social debate of a formal industry for prostitution and objectively lays out a steady path for a better socio-economic development. A historical analogy was employed in the prediction of the outcomes of the policy models of the Dutch and Bangladesh in the Indian context by employing economic theories. This application places the questions asked in the context of the current stage of development of India. Along with Growth Indices, Human Trafficking Statistics and trends on HIV/AIDS are superimposed into this because of the direct impact it has on the Prostitution industry and to examine how the legalization affects these statistics. With reference to the analytical insights studied, the paper arrives at a conclusive inference that India is, as yet, not economically equipped to undergo formalization of prostitution. The developing nation does not have the preconditions for ensuring the upward trajectory in the standard of living. This underlines the ever asserted disparity between Growth and Development and the fact that one does not necessitate the other. The findings are backed by statistical data from surveys from national registries, research and reports.&nbsp

    Get PDF
This research is related to the importance of introducing a gender approach in educational curricula. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has defined in its 4th goal the need to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This means that educational systems should have in mind the need to introduce gender debate in different areas of educations, from teacher training to subject knowledge definition, to change traditional gender roles and stereotypes. Using a qualitative research methodology based in documental analyses it will be presented how some European countries have been developing efforts to include gender equality as a topic or as an interdisciplinary subject in school curricula. The research focus on how these efforts are happening in Portugal and how school curricula are not involved in it – and this is an important challenge to be met by policy makers. Some recommendations are issued to foster the goal of gender equality as a tool to improve quality in education and contribute to a more balanced society in terms of gender representation

A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF HUMAN RESOURCE ACCOUNTING MODELS

    Get PDF
Rational use of human resources is vital for taking managerial decisions. Pronouncing qualitatively by dignitaries is the manifestation of the importance of human resources to the prosperity of an organization but very often, quantitative information with regard to their contribution is not recorded in books of accounts and does not find proper place in traditional accounting practices prevalent in India mainly due to inappropriately or insufficiency of their quantification. Human Resource Accounting being an information system considers human resources invested in business as assets and places their monetary values in books of accounts providing valuable information relating to human resources to all interested parties. In a developing country like India with abundant human resources, paying inadequate attention and keeping their contribution outside the financial picture of an organisation evidence the lack of transparency in books of accounts. With the advent of scientific management with emphasis on quantitative methodology to execute the effective utilization of all resources, the study aims at quantifying data relating to human resources and critically examining the models developed so far from the author’s own perception to report its value for the management of organization.  The study finds that there is no single model satisfying all the needs of a model. A great deal of further research work relating to application of a system of modified version of human resource accounting is of paramount importance for successful development of human resource

The main purpose of the study was to find out the professional development needs of teachers, head teachers and Circuit Supervisors (CS) in the Basic Schools in the Central Region of Ghana. The study employed the descriptive survey design. The simple random sampling technique was used to sample 209 teachers whilst the purposive sampling technique was also used to sample 29 head teachers and 11 CS for the study. A self-designed questionnaire with reliability co-efficient of 0.87 was used to collect data from the respondents. Data collected from the respondents was analysed into frequency counts and percentages.  The study established that the teachers, head teachers, and CS across both geographical locations of the study participate in staff development programmes. Nevertheless, the respondents in urban schools experience more participation than their colleagues in rural-urban schools. It was further revealed that the professional development needs of teachers, head teachers and Circuit Supervisors (CS) varies across the two sites of the study. The study, therefore, recommended that the types of professional development programmes should be tailored to meet the needs of stakeholders in education (i.e. teachers, head teachers, and circuit supervisors)
