Get PDFIn the era of Millennium, How the pedagogy of teaching has evolved? Do we teach the wisdom of moral values and tolerance? If ‘yes’why the gun shootings at Orlando and Texas has gone on rampage in America. The citizens of the modern world exhibit more intolerance rather adhering to temperance and tolerance. Through the lens of in-depth introspection, we need to analyse -especially the teaching fraternity: What are the essentials required to design pedagogies that shall assert Peace building and Moral Wisdom? In recent times, were the pedagogical reflections of peace and moral standards inducted and consciously taught in the teaching standards? If one say ,that considerable importance has been given in framing the educational course structure in coherence with Peace Building, Moral-Values and Humanity, then why the culture of terrorism in Syria, Kashmir and Israel- Palestine and hatred between neighbouring nations; such as India – Pakistan, North Korea- South Korea had taken its course so violently? 
DOES “GLASS CEILING” OR “SLIPPERY LADDER” LEAD TO THE SCARCITY OF WOMEN IN ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP? AN APPROACH OF Q-METHODOLOGY
Get PDFGender equality and gender parity has been the central issue for countries. Lack of senior women leaders, in general, frequently been the heated subject of debate in many countries and Vietnam is no exception. Despite of recently women have made great contributions both in the academia and social life, they still remain underrepresented in the top levels of leaders both in public administration and higher education institutions. This study aims to explore the main reasons leading to the scarcity of women in academic leadership, in the case of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh city (VNU-HCM). Based on using the Q methodology-introduced by William Stephenson in 1935, this study asked eighteen women of VNU-HCM to rank-order a set of different forty statements about causes limited the advancement opportunities of women from “most disagree” to “most agree”. By identifying disagreement and consensus among participants, four diverse perspectives on the root causes for the persistence of gender inequality at the highest ranks of academic leadership were uncovered including factor 1 - family orientation, factor 2- alternative choices, factor 3- traditional cultural social values, and factor 4- workplace attitude and structure. This study also finds out that most of female managers at the VNU-HCM maybe face ‘slippery ladder” than a “glass ceiling” because they by themselves skip the advancement opportunities. 
CREATING DIAGRAMS FOR PROBLEM-SOLVING IN MATHEMATICS: IS IT WORTH THE EFFORT?
Get PDFDiagrams are ubiquitous in mathematics instruction. This investigation examines whether the mental effort – often referred to as cognitive load – that is required to construct and use a diagram in order to solve a problem is associated with success in arriving at accurate problem solutions. In this article, data from a series of experiments that were conducted during the past decade are re-analyzed to compare the self-rated effort of being trained to use a diagram with subsequent problem-solving performance, relative to interventions in which participants were trained to use only equations to solve the same word problems. The results demonstrate that the mental effort invested in diagram training is not uniformly beneficial across all types of mathematics problems. Specifically, diagram training is more efficacious for conditional-probability word problems than for joint- and total-probability word problems. Of particular note is the repeated finding that training in how to use Venn diagrams causes worse performance for undergraduates solving total-probability problems
THE VIABILITY OF HALAL FOOD INDUSTRY FOR BRUNEI ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION: SWOT ANALYSIS
Get PDFThere has been a growing interest in research for halal industry as the market has seen a tremendous growth in the global market and develops a strong presence in developed countries. With the halal industry being worth of US650 billion alone in the food sector, vast opportunities in the global halal food industry for Brunei to use in order to diversify its economy. Brunei has been prioritised economic diversification as a mean to economic development; however, it has not shown any successful result so far. For a long period, Brunei has sustained its high dependency on oil and gas sector, in which economic diversification is a key to lower down the current dependency. Brunei Halal brand was established as one of attempts to help push forward Brunei's halal industry and supply the amount of halal certified food to the global Muslim population. In addition, owing to strong religious identity and principle, Brunei halal gained a reputable status to international and Islamic standards. The attempt of this paper is to assess the viability of the halal food industry as a source for economic diversification of Brunei with understanding of the current status of Brunei halal food industry by SWOT analysis. This study conducted semi-structured interview with respondents who are stakeholders in halal food industry to obtain further data in addition to data collected from secondary sources
BARRIERS TO ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN HOTELS IN KWAZULU- NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA
Get PDFIn the last two decades an increasing number of studies have focused on the impacts of tourism development on the environment aimed at the depletion of natural resources, the generation of waste and pollution and general environmental degradation. Consequently, the huge growth in the hotel industry has considerably affected the environment at a global level as the sector consumes large amounts of energy, water and non-durable products. Hotels are therefore now urged to engage in responsible and sustainable environmental management practices. Often hotel managers are keen to engage in responsible environmental practices but are unable to do so due to certain impediments. This article examines the barriers or challenges that are faced in adopting more sustainable and responsible environmental management practices in hotels in KwaZulu- Natal, South Africa. n total, 142 hotels (including hotel chains as one entity) were identified in KwaZulu-Natal and a census approach was adopted, in that all 142 were approached to participate in the study. Sixty hotels responded. Data was collected through a web-based, online survey questionnaire. The findings reveal that hoteliers are faced with a number of barriers in the implementation of environmental management practices. These barriers include lack of knowledge and expertise, lack of resources to implement certain environmental management practices, lack of government assistance, lack of legislation and regulation and high costs. Furthermore, a noteworthy finding is that a number of hotels in KwaZulu-Natal are unaware of the savings potential associated with environmental programmes, that is, the direct benefits to their establishments
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PRACTICAL WORK IN PHYSICS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of physics practical work on students’ academic performances and to compare male and female students’ academic performances after the implementation of practical work in experimental group. This study was conducted in a secondary school at Semporna District in Sabah. A total of sixty-six (66) Form Four students (e.g., 16 years old) participated in this research; thirty-two (32) students were assigned to experimental group and thirty-four (34) students to control group. The experimental group and control group were taught by using practical work and traditional teaching method respectively. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Data on students’ academic performances were analysed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 22.0 and Mann-Whitney U Test was used. Before the treatment, students in both groups showed no significant difference in their academic performances (U = 489.00, p > 0.05 is not significant)indicated that the group of students is homogenous. Students’ academic performances, however, have a statistical difference after the implementation of practical work (U = 380.00, p < 0.05 is significant). Gender analysis was done where male students in experimental group performed better than female students (U = 60.00, p < 0.05 is significant). It is suggested that educators should conduct practical work as frequent as possible (once a week) and increase the time of practical work to enhance students’ understanding towards the physics concept
TECHNOLOGY IN BUSINESS EDUCATION (LEARNING APPLICATIONS - ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSIONS IN YOUTUBE)
Get PDFProfessional internships presented during academic learning levels consume prudently edited classifications of screen capture, collected as a favorite or dedicated display in a student’s communication about the firm’s operations and existence in the society. Academic assignments are stipulated for curriculum clearance, marks percentage or the course grade. As the submission is purely pro-business and a win-win for the student to become a potential employee in the future, the samples presented were not given ample critical attention. YouTube is a way to sensationalize the standing to the viewers through computer-mediated message, hence the assignment methodology to be interesting for application, feasibility check, adequate workload for clearing the learning objectives and easy to cut corners without sacrificing educational quality was applied. The enrichment in learning stimulated the learning reasonableness among students, and reduced the evaluation burden in teacher without compromising learning goals. Therefore, to achieve the success in online submission of assignments by students, certain parameters such as the time frame, calendar plan and execution of an assignment were effectively managed. 
ELEARNING CURRENT SITUATION AND EMERGING CHALLENGES
Get PDFThis paper aims to present and discuss current, as well as future challenges of eLearning technologies in the higher education institutions and organizations.ELearning has greatly transformed our way of learning by the use of the newly developed technologies and applications. This paper explores the eLearning current situation. After a brief eLearning history, from the earlier 1960’s, with the first generalized computer assisted instruction system PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) to the 2010's with the development of social media for learning and the MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses). After that, the paper provides a review of the eLearning concept and how it has evolved over the years, followed by a look at the current technologies (from CD-ROMs to Virtual worlds and Game authoring technologies), applications and platforms being used. The emerging challenges are eventually discussed: needs for identifying suitable strategies and understanding the technology and pedagogy integration for effective eLearning implementations referring to pedagogical and cognitive aspects, level of ICT skills for both all the people involved in teaching, total commitment from management for eLearning system operationalization and sustainability, need for software quality frameworks and standards. 
A TEACHERS’ SURVEY ON PORTRAYAL OF SEXISM IN THE IMAGES OF IRANIAN EFL SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS
Get PDFThe current study was an attempt to investigate the Iranian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ opinion on sexism in the images of the Iranian EFL school textbooks. In order to achieve these objectives, 40 (20 male and 20 female) EFL teachers from junior high and high schools in Tehran participated in this study. The data was obtained using a questionnaire which was previously piloted. Findings indicate that all of the teachers are aware of sexism in the images of the current EFL school textbooks and also believe that the books do not represent both genders equally. The findings also show that the teachers detest sexism in the images and would like to eradicate it from textbooks. In addition, the participants believe that textbooks need to be revised to represent both genders equally. According to the results of the current study, the teachers are aware of what actually happens in the educational contexts and they all believe that this type of sexism in the textbooks can have negative effects on students’ behavior toward the other gender in the society. They also highlighted that sexism in the images may impact students future decisions on the study field or their choice of profession. The implications of the study are for the EFL policy makers and textbook writers and EFL teachers. 
A “FRONTIER” OR A “SPHERE”: AN ESSAY ON A LEGACY OF EUROPEAN COLONIALISM
Get PDFAs a historical phenomenon, European colonialism has, from its beginning through the present day, a tremendous influence on the history of human beings, and has long been studied by students and scholars from all parts of the world. Traditional understandings of the motivations and impacts of European colonialism has focused on the economic, political, and religious areas, which, without doubts, are true and sound. However, the mentality behind the decisions and actions of colonialism was not commonly understood. This paper focus on exploring this type of predatory “frontier” mentality, as well as its antithesis the “sphere” mentality, through interpreting and understanding the human mind behind the various causes and consequences of European colonialism. Given the current global situation, the growth of the “sphere” mentality and the decline of its antithesis is likely to be the general trend as a product of the evolution of human civilization in the twenty first century. This shift in human mentality from competition to cooperation is the biggest legacy of European colonialism.
