Curriculum implementation needs to be gauged regularly to ensure its effectiveness, efficiency and its relevance to the needs of the students and of the industry. This descriptive-survey research gauged the status of the Social Studies program under the K12 Curriculum for its first four years of implementation. A total of 30 Social Studies teachers and 5 school administrators from three national secondary schools in one division in Central Luzon, Philippines served as respondents of the study. Results revealed that a typical teacher is a female, 37.33 years old, teaching profession for 3.07 years, and a college graduate while a typical administrator is a female, 32.20 years old, serving for about 21.60 years, and a college graduate with MA units. The secondary teachers and school administrators assessed the status of implementation of the curriculum in selected public secondary schools as “moderately observed” in terms of resource variables (M=3.63), process variables (M=3.84) and contextual variables (3.93). Moreover, there is no significant difference between the assessment of the teachers and administrators on the status of the implementation of Social Studies program with regard to the three components. Further, there is no significant difference in the assessment of the teachers and administrators when respondents are grouped according to profile variables. A well-monitored implementation of the K12 Curriculum, specifically the Social Studies program, by stakeholders is recommended. Periodic assessment of the curriculum may also be done to ensure its alignment to the changing educational landscapes and to cope with the challenges of Education 4.0

    Get PDF
Previous studies on cognitive load model have been entirely theoretical and there are no empirical studies currently that have been carried out to test the hypotheses in these theoretical models. Therefore, this study is aimed at proving Choi’s cognitive load model using empirical data. The empirical data was collected in a foreign language-learning environment. The research questionnaire was extracted from the work design questionnaire, learning process questionnaire, mental effort, intrinsic load, extraneous load and germane load scales and was administered to foreign students in Indonesia (N=191). Descriptive statistics showed the foreign students’ Indonesian language proficiency (mean = 4.76 and standard deviation = 2.594) and English proficiency (mean =7.72 and standard deviation =1.732). Foreign students have good fluency in English language as compared to Bahasa Indonesia.  Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SmartPLS was carried out and the researcher found out that there is a significant relationship between physical environment and learner characteristics, physical environment and lecture characteristics, lecture characteristics and learner characteristics and finally lecture characteristics and cognitive load. The researcher also carried out bivariate correlation analysis using SPSS to determine the relationships between cognitive load factors, physical environment, lecture characteristics, and learner characteristics. The researcher found out that learning in Bahasa Indonesia demotivates students, whilst learning in English (which the foreign students are fluent in) encourages investment of germane load, which is good for learning. Also, the ergonomic condition of the classroom influences the extent at which students invest in mental effort and germane load in learning. In conclusion, our results support the cognitive load theory and we recommend more empirical studies be carried out to enhance our understanding of the cognitive load theory.&nbsp

    Get PDF
Plagiarism among academicians has been a popular issue in Indonesia for the last five years. Some people argue that plagiarism occurs due to pressure of work to get certain level of academic degree. Another opinion claims that it is due to incapability of writing an academic paper. Plagiarism is definitely unacceptable and not tolerated in any context. Writing an academic paper is about producing a masterpiece. An academic writing should be given a high appreciation to boost positive motivation for academicians to write and publish their research papers. A lot of efforts have been conducted by institutions to avoid plagiarism, such as giving academic writing lectures and citation training, and checking papers using plagiarism checker tools. However, plagiarism still has its popularity among academicians including students and lecturers. For this reason, it is interested to study how those academicians perceive plagiarism. We specify the study by subjecting the research for university student. We investigate students’ behavior towards plagiarism. Thirty-five students of a private university in Ponorogo, Indonesia are purposively taken as sample of the study and they are interviewed to gain the data. The results of data analysis are discussed with related literatures to draw the conclusions.&nbsp

Assessment for learning is one of the teaching and learning process that has been adopted to improve and accelerate learners’ ability in their learning especially involving modern foreign language. However, the process of learning becomes more productive when Assessment for learning is implemented in an informal approach for non-native adults. Therefore, the study focused on the implementation of an informal assessment for learning in a Malay language course that is being taught as modern foreign language among non-native adult learners in a higher learning institution. Malay as a modern foreign language is still new at piloting stage in Malaysia. As a result, it would be useful to adopt assessment for learning informally for non-native adults acquiring the proficiency in an intense period. So, qualitative approach, an action research methodology has been undertaken as it also equally features of Assessment for learning and in parallel to accelerating adult learners’ proficiency especially at beginners’ level.  Moreover, action research methodology is used to study the effectiveness of Assessment for learning applied among non-native adult learners in the Malay course. The research study involved 30 non-native adult learners in a higher learning institution from January 2014 until December 2017. The instruments used to collect data were by means of feedback, observation and continuous assessments. The data were analyzed in a quantified approach using descriptive research method to measure the frequency of non-native adult learners’ achievement by using Likert scale rating. The main findings of this research revealed how informal Assessment for learning assists non-native adult learners achievements and also benefits trainers in future to adopt and apply such model to support their teaching and elevate non-native adult learners’ achievement in Malay course

The integration of the effective study techniques could still be a relevant education research topic if we are to consider the changing demand for skills brought about by technological advancements. Thus, Graphic Organizer as a teaching tool was developed and implemented to promote conceptual understanding in the solution processes of algorithmic related topics in Physical Science. Specifically, the study determined the level of academic achievement of the participants in the pretest and posttest assessment of a quasi-experimental research design. Further, this study also determined which group (control or experimental) performed better after applying the intervention. Results showed that the control and experimental groups pretest scores do not meet expected proficiency level, however, there was a significant improvement in their posttests scores described respectively as satisfactory and very satisfactory. It was found out further that participants from experimental group achieved significantly better than the participants from the control group. As observed, the participants have confidently and actively indulged themselves in graphic organizer guided activities resulting to a deeper understanding of concepts, retention, and mastery of contents.&nbsp

SEE & SAY: UTILIZING VISUALS TO STIMULATE NOVICE LEARNERS’ VERBALIZATION OF IDEAS IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE

    Get PDF
The rise of information technology has transformed our way of communicating to each other as visuals have become as significant as verbal messages. Novice English language learners usually find it difficult to orally verbalize their understanding and ideas when they are given word-based texts.  This research aimed to elicit oral responses from English language learners towards wordless still graphics by encouraging them to decode visuals through a specific strategy. The strategy is a set of hierarchical steps developed according to the model of understanding known as Structured Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy with elements from several techniques including Visible Thinking Routine. The subjects were an intact class of 12 students of lower English language proficiency. Their responses towards a series of visuals were analyzed through concept maps. The findings revealed that they were able to orally verbalize their thoughts towards the visuals. This was an improvement from the initial reluctance and limited oral production they exhibited towards word-based texts. It is likely that wordless visuals might be as effective or probably more effective than words in eliciting ideas and language outputs from novice students. Hence, it is essential to consider viewing as the fifth language skill
