PERSPECTIVE ON CODE SWITCHING IN CONTENT-BASED CLASSROOMS: GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS CONTEXT IN PAKISTAN

    Get PDF
Teaching in Pakistan has always shown irregular policy decisions with reference to medium of instructions, and choice of language used by teachers and students. This has resulted in below average education quality in government schools.  Multitude of research has been done, both internationally and nationally, on use of language for teaching and learning. Using language repertoire of a learner has been found useful and effective for development and learning (Manan et al., 2017, Liebscher & Dailey, 2005). With recent trend towards code switching by declaring EMI as a challenge (p.47, National Education Policy Report, 2017), the paper aims at mapping teachers’ perspective on the policy. This is achieved through a questionnaire and series of interviews on code switching developed on patterns of Translanguage theory (García & Lin, 2017, García & Wei, 2014).  By considering translanguaging, the pedagogic counterpart of code switching, the research provides direction and suggests a solution to a national problem that is which language to use for teaching and communication in government schools for effective teaching and learning

School Enterprise is an approach in learning that aims to foster students’ entrepreneurial skills and enhance their competence in managing business projects. Thus, the Business Management Programme of Keningau Vocational College decided to launch the School Enterprise Project in order to boost the students’ skills in entrepreneurship. The aim of the project was to provide more opportunities for students to demonstrate their skills in making sales and profits. The funds raised during this project would be used to purchase reference books on topics related to business management since there was shortage of such books at the college. An intact class of 14 students were involved in the study and they were assigned into five teams in which each team set up their own booth to sell their merchandises. The data were collected through observation, survey and an analysis of their business plan including their profits. The findings showed that the result were positive as students gained profits from sales that they successfully made and they displayed optimistic views on their experience. It was recommended that this project should be turned into a regular assignment

This study was aimed to analyze the relationship between learning patterns, academic engagement, and GPA. The participants were 81 undergraduates from a private Engineering and Business College in Kuwait who were asked to complete the Inventory of Learning Styles (ILS) and Student Engagement Inventory- College Version (SEI-C). The data were analyzed via correlation analysis, using SPSS statistical package. The results showed that student’s learning patterns were associated with student’s type of engagement to learn. In this respect, the Teacher-Student Relationship (TSR) was positively related to Meaning- and Reproduction-Directed pattern. Control and Relevance of Schoolwork (CRS) and Future Goals (FGA) were related to all patterns, except for the Undirected pattern (UD). Conversely, UD, and RD pattern were related to Peer Support (PSL). Finally, the GPA was related to the Application-Directed pattern, only. Furthermore, the results from a cultural perspective are discussed

Our analysis of the social and economic relationship in the tourism of Mozambique besides our personal relationship was motivated by the exploration of the potential hidden in the tourism targeting developing countries. In the analysed country the percentage contribution of travel-tourism sector to the overall GDP from 2008 to 2018 started to increase again after plummeting during 2011 and 2012 but has stagnated since 2015. In the medium term the sector output has been increasing continually since 2008 except for the period 2011-2012 (2017: 455.9 million USD) and according to the data revealed by WTTC in 2018 it is expected to increase 1.5 times. However, the 2017 figure places the country in the 136th position in the world ranking lagging well behind the world average (21.5 billion USD). In our research we analyse the social and economic causes of the country’s small competitiveness. We also unfold the tourism supply elements, the role played by the sector in the economy of Mozambique. We sought answer to the question whether the society sees opportunities for engaging efficiently in tourism and what experiences it has had in the process of welcoming tourists. In answering the economic questions we have compared secondary data and information. In our primary research we have prepared a questionnaire for ordinary citizens and institutions operating in the tourism sector. In these questions we have asked their opinions, attitude, formal education level and their willingness to engage in tourism in the future. We believe these two themes are crucial for boosting tourism in the country. This research, as the first step, also aims to build an international research relationship in the future

EUROPEAN GOOD PRACTICES ON INCLUSION OF MIGRANT AND ROMA CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS

    Get PDF
Children of migrant and Roma origins often face situations of exclusion. As a result, their educational achievements are generally lower, while their chances of leaving compulsory education are greater. This situation entails greater risks of social marginalisation, integration failure and, ultimately, poverty, which in turn has adverse effects on the social development and economic growth of the host country in the long term. The RoMigSc Project has compiled a catalogue of good practices in order to show successful initiatives in the field of school inclusion of Roma and migrant children, so as to encourage mutual learning and knowledge transfer among the EU Member States of the most effective school inclusion policies relating to migrant and Roma children across Europe. To do so, an Implementation research study was conducted. It shed light, on the one hand, on a number of successful actions and programmes; and on the other, on certain difficulties and solutions that brought about improvements. Therefore, this work contributes to the corpus of evidence on efficient strategies to encourage school inclusion and the lessons that can be learnt

Ideally, every government agency must be able to develop training programs and information security awareness in its own environment. But the fact is in Indonesia, not all of government agencies have implemented training programs and information security awareness. Thirteen percent of the respondents surveyed said they already had the program but were not structured and had no guidance, so the program was not well organized. This study provides a structured guide to building an effective information security training and awareness program, based on the ADDIE instructional design model approach (analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate). The results of the study state that the ADDIE instructional design model can be used to construct training programs and information security awareness in government agencies in a structured manner and can guarantee that training, awareness, education and professional development are not stagnant and can always be relevant in answering information security issues that occur in organizations

The paper describes the process of building and developing a proper website for academic institutions. Development needs to follow certain guidelines like planning a good structure and writing quality content in order to be able to convey the information that needs to be delivered to the target audience. The study surveyed existing higher education institutions websites from the current best top 100 list by QS World University Rankings. Although the scale is different the audience is the same and the structure of the websites does not differ. We found that educational websites keep a similar structure, but some manage to present the information in a much subtle manner to their audience. One of the most important features of an academic website is to make information accessible to all. The authors used a documentation review as a means of surveying to gather information about university websites. The purpose being to make informed recommendations about the best practices used in higher education website development. In conclusion we found that information needs to be displayed clearly, we recommend contact information to be placed on the front page as well as relevant information about the institution

PRACTICES OF THE QUALITY OF GOVERNMENT IN IMMIGRATION CONTROL AT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS

    Get PDF
The quality of government by Rothstein and Teorell refers to the term of impartiality in the exercise of public authority which comprises an equal conduct to public administration, public choice, multiculturalism, and feminism. This qualitative research with multidisciplinary approach examines the quality of government in immigration control at airports in Indonesia from its perspectives, principles, and practices. The result shows it has not considered the quality of government and has not designed a framework or model of the quality of government in immigration control at airports. We propose the quality of government utilizes principles of the moral law of public authority which refers to Kantianism constructivism, formalism, positivism, and rule of law. The perspectives on the quality of government should encompass human rights, sovereignty, border integrity, international law aspects, and information systems. In practices of immigration control, the quality of government shall generate positive impacts on economy, socio-culture, politics, cooperation, and national security of a country
